Is the Q Stick really an upgrade over Dawes?

Puzzled? Think Leigh Brown.

Dawes is not a Leigh Brown type, Lynch is ... Bucks is trying to revisit 2010 & replace both Davis & Brown.

Well obviously Melbourne rate him very highly.... Something appears off.
Lynch has a season left in him and is barely an upgrade.
I don't think the whole story has come out which is a credit to Collingwood and Dawes.

Lynch is about on par with Dawes re what he'll offer. But we also get a free hit at a top 20 (maybe 21 with the concession picks distributed today ?) draft pick into re bargain. Shrewd business by Derek hine

As a forward - no
As a back up Ruck - yes

Now that the AFL has changed the ruck rules allowing tall skinny players to have an impact, does this make Ceglar and Witts more viable, and Q less important?

Can those two actually provide a presence up forward? Because Lynch offers a big body up forward.

It may be a bit early, but apparently Witts goes alright, + another preseason, Pie supporters would be able to answer that more accurately.

I watched a fair bit of them in the VFL this season and, while they will both be big imposing units, they're not quite ready to act as a target up forward at AFL level.

Melbourne have little, even nothing to do with why the Pies grabbed free agent Lynch. Certainly nothing to do with upgrading the list, plenty to do with plugging a hole on the list that Leigh Brown retiring created.

As for Dawes, he played in a team with Leigh Brown but headed for the door when the Pies signed Lynch ... I think it was not Lynch but the fact the Pies had publicised Dawes signing on for much less than market rate. Did he feel used, would you?

Q stick has had an excellent career with the highlight kicking over 60 goals in a premiership year and being the leading goalscorer on grand final day with 3, as well as performing well in other finals with a 6 goal semi final performance against the bulldogs being memorable. Has been extremely durable with over 200 games. I doubt chris dawes will ever match his career. His only advantage was youth and I can't blame Q for going for a pay day at the expense of collingwood. I hope Q does well but he will always be remembered as something of a cult player for the west coast, although that undersells his performances. Don't confuse his apparent clumsiness for lack of actual output over a long span. Q is a better player but age is against him

Q may turn out to have the added bonus of giving them time to develop. Then again, it's probably why he was brought in.

Doesn't have too long left in him but will be a very useful pickup. Big improvement over Dawes.

I think Dawes will improve at Melbourne though. Clearly he felt the pressure a lot this year. Won't be any pressure in a team that will be winning 4-5 games next year.

Depends on the team and the coach.

Get the feeling Buckley wanted Q to replace Leigh Brown in the forward/ruck role, something Dawes is decidedly shit at. Don't think he was planning on running with three big forwards, so Dawes became surplus once Q arrived anyway. They're contending now and for 2013 you'd expect Lynch to outperform Dawes if he stays healthy.

Melbourne want Dawes as a foil and a decoy for Clark, someone who can lead and bring the ball to ground, a big forward with a mature body who will train hard and set a good example. He's 24, Clark is 25. We've now got a CHF/FF combo for four years, both of whom are around 200cm and 100kg. And we've got Hogan to add to that. The Dees are clearly planning around having a monstrous forward line (like Sydney have at the moment I guess)

Both teams got what they wanted, it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Ceglar is tall and skinny, listed as 204cm/90kg
Witts on the otherhand is a monster , easily biggest guy on Pies list and still a teenager in 2012 season. 113kg/209cm

Neither are AFL ready yet although hopefully may get a taste in 2013. Q Stick will take over the Dawes role for sure

For mine the original intention was to have both there next year although Dawes place was less certain once Lynch arrived. Buckleys talk with Dawes after Lynch was picked up obviously told him the home truths about his new place in the pecking order and I don't blame him for testing the waters elsewhere . I think he is better than people credit him for and could be solid for the Demons

It was interesting that Collingwood didn't seem to try to talk him out of it at all. Wonder wheter this may mean Buckley saw Paine as a more likely option in the next few seasons. To pick up pick 21 for him hasn't been too bad an outcome. It's one of those trades that may end up working for both clubs
