It’s time to abolish restricted free agency compensation

I don't know what the solution is, but Pick 3 for Ben McKay is surely the death knell for the current FA model.
If Ben McKay is worth pick 3 hawthorn should of got the Gaza Strip from the UN for Franklin

Exactly!

What stops someone offering 700K x 3 (2.1M total), triggering band 1 compo, then after a year changing the rest to 350K x 4 (Also 2.1M total)

My understanding is that if there are compensation picks involved then the salary cap will have to include the 1st agreement.

But that's why we have free agency - as a compromise for the players who argue they're not getting their market value.

You can't seriously be arguing that North can't afford to keep him.

They've even openly said they would match the offer if they don't get Pick 3 (I'm fine with that, love the transparency).

Clearly they can afford to keep him, they'd just rather Pick 3. Of course they would.

It's the compensation that's broken.

The salary cap is doing it's job to equalise as McKay is acting rationally - he's going for money (he's hardly leaving for success, look where he's going!)

North are losing him for one reason only - they want the compensation.

Which is meant to be exactly that - "compensation". But it's not, it's become the goal and thus it's being manipulated.

He wouldn't be getting band one if he wasn't already a well paid player yeah? Perhaps Essendon or other clubs would rather other players on our list and forcing to overpay for McKay (yes I think Essendon overpaid by what seems about $120K) means those other players might not get offered the contracts they are worth cos we paid McKay too much.

LDU, Thomas and Sheezel are gonna be on alot of money in a few years time.

They got exactly the same compensation rate. the highest one available. Its based on your finishing position on the ladder to balance out the hit of a lower ranked team losing their better players when they obviously have less of them.

Hawks should have matched the bid. That's why restricted FA exists.
In today's money that contract was 13.5 million dollars. It was only possible because the AFL underwrote it for Sydney. It wasn't possible for us to match.

Get rid of compensation and good clubs will take the best players of the bad clubs and the bad clubs will get nothing in return and only get worse.
Then it's on those clubs to build a good culture.

Brisbane did it. Gold Coast are in the process. GWS have completely turned it around in the past year.

Players couldn't flee Brisbane quick enough a few years ago. Now they are a destination club!

The compensation system is broken, agree it should be abolished for a host of reasons many already mentioned in this thread.

One of the worst is that every club not involved in a particular deal is disadvantaged as well by compo picks.

End of rounds. That's when compo should be given. That's it.

Furthermore, every club should get one - like it's Round 4 or 5. Your selection just gets bumped up to higher end of rounds if the club has a net loss of players. That way, picks AREN'T generated out of thin air.

Didn't the Swans cop some kind of trade ban for picking up Buddy. Seems odd they would do that to them and underwrite the deal.
The Swans themselves are underwritten by the AFL. They cannot go broke and will always be supported because the AFL needs their media market.

Hence they have the scope to do deals other clubs cannot, like that 10 million dollar deal.

Not really. Otherwise clubs would just go through the whole dance of not agreeing, so they could end up with FA. Would be the current system with more steps.

I'm simply suggesting that clubs are forced to trade like they are with 99% of the deals that go through each year. If they can't work out a suitable trade, player either stays or goes through the draft.

FA is just too broken to work anymore.
Ok,
But the players still want it so the lesser players have free moment to prolong their careers.

Maybe my idea was a bit convoluted but the teams that gain FA need to pay somehow. How about the there is a running tally of FA movement that stretches 10 years and as free agents move they can ranked into different bands. You get zero compensation if you are in the negative over that 10 year period. Similar to what happens if two FA move between teams in the same year except it spreads out over 10 years to even things up.

Have the running tally public and transparent. It will at least give everyone a FA ladder to look at.

The problem is not the compo formula, it's the clubs willing to pay outrageous contracts well above the players pay grade.

Dodo, you lied. You did pay him more than he was worth.

Possibly news articles around the time.

Hawks were told the offer was so big we didnt have the money to match. Didnt even give an option to try to work something out.
Ah yeah. Not having the money to match the insane bid from Swans is different from "the AFL told us we're weren't allowed to match".

Hawks just prioritised keeping the other 21 premiership players instead.

It's only unfair if it's North

Errrr, what?

Pick 3 for Ben McKay tells me that there are people at North on their knees doing the gobble gobble for certain people at AFL House.

It's an absolutely disgraceful abuse of AFL power.
