It’s time to abolish restricted free agency compensation

Lol meddled.

Yes Meddled.

We hear for MONTHS that McKay will get North Band 1 compensation as his salary will be over the $800k/year mark yet, now the deal is done, the HS is reporting that it is still under that figure but North 'magically' still received Band 1 compensation. The AFL are clearly 'meddling' in the process, giving North overs the overs they were entitled to.

Surely the compensation for losing a player to free agency should be the salary cap space the team gets from losing the player? If afl wants to give a team help who loses lots of players to FA then give them additional salary cap to keep those players

By that logic we should remove the draft completely and only rely on the cap. It does work really well for NRL. In 20 years they have had a wide variety of premiers and finalists. Much more than us.

How so? Not every team gets additional salary cap, just if say the same team loses 2 free agents over a 2 year period that both played minimum 15 games in the season they played in their last years at the club they would then be given additional cap to try and entice players to come to them

We use the draft the same way we use compo, to try to ensure talent gets spread around, on the assumption that without it you would have a small number of teams hoarding the best talent, even with a salary cap.

But it does seem like other codes are able to share talent with just a cap (there could be other reasons for that though).

Salary cap space has not been an issue for North for over a decade.

His is extra space that is unable to attract top talent of benefit?

Dumb argument.

If you don’t like this then get rid of ALL the things that corrupt the draft; academies, compensation, assistance and father son.

Otherwise **** off with your whining.

A simple solution is to stop rewarding Clubs who do not run their houses properly.

The Dees received priority picks under the old system and turned them in to a pile of nothing (apologies to Trengove) and our recruiting team and coach Mark Neeld were simply not up to the job of drafting and coaching footballers.

In the case of North, JHF was gone after one year because North mismanaged everything about him, hired the wrong coach in Noble and recruiting manager in Glenn Luff. North deserved one last year but somehow its morphed into 4 despite North being better placed now than 12 months ago and with a quality coach.

Under the old rules priority draft picks were harder to come by, Brisbane got one, Crows and St Kilda got none and Carlton got nothing more than a couple of state league players. Gold Coast got a stupid amount, some help was fine to make up for their constant list errors but the AFL gave them a truckload due to the AFL’s own and Suns ongoing incompetence.

And we think this competition has integrity.
I think you need to learn how to count.

And your mob know all about that fact too !!

Every other club in the draft gets penalised because you lost a player.

It's a s**t system - end of story.

Yeah being at the bottom is pretty s*** to be honest

Some have short memories though I guess

I think the reality is we won't be the last club to be in this position in the very near future

Free agency has hindered more than helped clubs at the bottom so compensation is necessary

Were benefiting here. Even as that's the cas, it needs to be changed. Such a dumb system that's over inflating market rates for players. If you want the after match if you don't, enjoy the cap space. It's not hard afl.

You'd think it'd be that simple, wouldn't you?

How do you gain salary cap space for an out of contract player?

Utterly ridiculous and shows the AFL is just another corrupt organisation.

The formula they use to determine what the compensation levels are have been kept under lock & key which add further to the myth, intrigue & overall ire.

If Ben McKay is worth #3 after playing just 70-odd games, that ranks right up there with what Melbourne got for Frawley when he went to the Hawks.

I hope like hell the other clubs complain in unison, something has to be done to rectify this farce.

As you'd expect, the only people happy with a decision like this are the recipients, in this case North supporters.

It has made Melbourne the greatest team…..in their own minds

Based on a rule thats the same for every club e.g. has to have played minimum 15 games in their last season in AFL (to remove fringe players moving for more opportunity) and the club has to have lost at least 1 free agent in each of the past 2 years

What if they don't replace that player? That's the whole point of compensation. Particularly if they lose a player late in the window. It's compensation for a net loss of players. This is required.

For me, the big issue with compo isn't just the selection awarded, but that it's also generated from thin air as an additional pick in the draft for the club.

My solution:
1 - All 18 clubs have a compensation pick in the draft, but these are allocated after Round 5, so essentially, they are the Round 6 selections. They can't be traded.

2 - If a club, such as NM and McKay, have a net loss in FA, then their Round 6 selection (compensation pick) is bumped up to a higher end of round - end of Rd 1, end of Rd 2, etc., depending on the formula bands. Compo picks aren't inserted within a round.

3 - Clubs who don't have net loss in FA can choose to use their compo pick for selections (round 6) if the draft gets there.

100% should never have existed in the first place
Seemed to get conflated with the compensation picks that were given when Gold Coast and GWS were able to poach players, which at the time were fair enough

FA compo is bullshit though, in every sense
It was absolutely an extension of the GC/GWS compo picks. Which is why it is so frustrating GAJ got 2 good firsts as his compo for Geelong but Buddy only got 19 as his for Hawthorn.

And what if no club wants to trade, or no player wants to go to that club?
I find it hard to believe that there wouldn’t be a single option available.

And if somehow that does happen then so be it. The idea of free agency compo is to help mitigate the loss of an 8-10 year player. I don’t see how drafting another 18 year old achieves that. All it does is allow clubs a leg up to build a dynasty in 4-5 years time.
