It's about time Collingwood got some respect

News flash to everyone: Collingwood were one goal off a flag last year. They got closer to Geelong than anyone did when it mattered most. They embarrassed North by over 10 goals and Port by 119 points, the two other teams to finish in the top 4. So why no respect?

The only answer is that people hate Collingwood so much that it prevents them from being objective towards them.

And people say they will fall this year. They can only get better. Yeah, they lost Buckley, Licuria and Clement, but Buckley and Licuria were irrelevant last year and even Clement did not play that many games.

After the games of C Wood and N Brown today, Collingwood already have shown that they have found a 10 year ruckman and a 10 year full back.

Then there is the development of Egan, together with the excitement in Ben Reid who will be given an extended chance to make his mark on the afl given Rusling's injury.

If Collingwood aren't playing off against Geelong in the Grand Final, I will be very surprised.

why? coz u beat fremantle?

they (Fremantle) are the most over-rated club in the AFL

I don't know why a Melbourne supporter would be so vocal in bagging Collingwood.
Your mob are favourites for the wooden spoon.
...I knew it wouldn't take long. Because my team will finish near bottom it automatically revokes my opinion does it?

I'm not bagging Collingwood, I'm bagging the Collingwood supporters who harp on with their rubbish theory that because they lost a prelim by 5 points and the margin was bigger the next week then they were 5 points off a flag.

I actually think Collingwood will be there abouts this year and can push the Geelong's, St.Kilda's etc. but I am sick and tired of hearing the stories of a kick away from a flag and for someone to start up a thread with 'Newsflash: Collingwood were 5 points away from a flag' is just complete stupidity.

Haha north, to say you're up near the standard of Geelong, Collingwood, St Kila or West Coast this year is humerous.

Hmmm, not sure. We haven't played them yet. Maybe we will, maybe we wont. I think by the end of the season we will be ahead of Collingwood, again. ;)

We just couldn't field anything remotely like our best team in the finals, lost our full forward and full back before the season started. Lost Corey Jones, Firrito and had the white maggots giving the Cats 20 frees to 3 to half time when we were having a crack.

We just didn't have the cattle to go on with it in finals in 2007. We are bigger, better, stronger this year.

Go you roos!

winning, or in your case losing margins, show you were just about the worst preliminary finalists in history.

you sucked, that's why you got caned.

Did those 20 free kicks translate into the 15+ goals we beat you by in that final???

Nope, didn't claim they did. They just didn't help when there was still a contest. Our young kids dropped their head and they will learn from the lessons last year, despite our depleted side we put up more of a fight than the Power did in the Grand Final.

You can't tell me the first half wasn't the worst umpiring display in the history of a finals performance given the spirit the other finals were umpired in.

Margins mean nothing in finals, you win or you lose, in years to come nobody will remember the margins in anything other than the Grand Final. I would have liked for our boys to fight the game out, was disappointing they didn't but I think getting to a preliminary after being 3rd last the year before was a significant step forward to take, people just see the end result and do not see the improvement that was made. The goal for this year is to improve again.

Good start to the year by the roos, getting pantsed by Essendon who should finish in the bottom 4. Maybe the roos can join Melbourne, Carlton, Essendon and Richmond down there.

Collingwood were NOT one goal off the flag last year. They were one goal away from playing off for a flag.

I rate Essendon a lot higher than Fremantle anyway.

Couldn’t care less about respect. In round 1 we got 4 points without Burns and with 10 players 21 or under, found a ruckman, albeit with some development ahead of him, confirmed a KP back prospect and Rocca moved well and appeared to be able to move freely again.

I went home happy.

Good post. Never heard a group of supporters try and get so much mileage out of finals loss. It's irrelevant to 2008.

2008: Collingwood are a pretty good team, who should be thereabouts and with an ounce of luck (same as 6-7 other sides) will push for a grand final berth.

After round 1: a scrappy win against Freo at the G = 4 points, but no reason to go and plonk your house on a Pies flag either. And..

who gives a toss that some media people didn't tip them to beat Freo - besides the fragile and emotionally unstable Pies supporter?

Freo weren't that far away from winning despite Pavlich and others not converting well enough when they had their chances.

It was more the way Collingwood played and play that impresses me. They strangle opposition sides defensively. They force teams wide and restrict their space very well. Even with poor opposition they dont usually win by much, but win they do. Malthouse sides of recent times have made Grand Finals when by rights they shouldn't have.

Their forwards are not that good. Rocca and Didak and thats about it and Rocca can usually be negated by a similar sized decent defender (Fletcher, Glass, Scarlett etc). Didak is hard to stop. This probably explains why Malthouse hammers home the defensive side of things.

Even with the Pies losing Buckley and Clement news of their imminent demise is premature. The Pies will be right in this all year. I just hope they dont finish top four.

It might be stating the bleeding obvious but the best way to beat the Pies is to get off to a very good start. They then have to abandon some of the defensive aspects of their game and take more risks attacking themselves which increases the possibility of turnovers.

and that's what it's all about.

this is stupid because respect means absolutely nothing in footy. the only team that deserves respect is geelong because they took home the flag last year, the rest were second best, simple as that. until another team wins the flag geelong will remain as the team to respect. sure collingwood have an exciting list but so do a bunch of other teams. its round 1, wait till september then talk about respect.

who cares about respect, its about winning and losing, nothing more

.

That's not fair!! I tipped them to be one of the top three teams end of this year.

You play in a competition so biased towards your cause it can barely be taken seriously. You should be extremely competitive most years. Yes you have a decent side and I congratulate your club on their recruitment and development of late but come on, a win over Freo in Melbourne is not worth a pinch of poo, particularly in March.

a win against freo may not mean much to many. but i would expect some respect to our list we have a good team. a first gamer beat pavlich. the reason why you guys refuse to accept that it was a good effort is because of the black and white strips.
It was a good effort - accepted. Happy now?
Respect for your list? - earn it. One win against the Dockers in March doesn't mean D*I*C** if it isn't backed up in April, May, etc.
