I was against Howard for his explosion in middle class welfare and the fact he pissed an unsustainable once in a lifetime mining boom up the wall pork-barrelling for votes. Spending is ok as long as a conservative does it I guess?

PS I used an independent source - https://www.oecd.org/tax/revenue-statistics-australia.pdf not 're-cast' figures.

IIRC they combine state and federal and hence misleading

Regardless your argument is absurd given spending is now over 2% gdp higher than when Howard left office.

If spending was where it was when Howard left office THERE WOULD BE NO DEFICIT. In fact there would be a handy surplus.

Anyone within nodding distance of reality knows they were socialists. Saying they are right wing is on a par with saying Hird is totally innocent wrt Essendon drugs saga.

There really are some utterly ignorant people. May as well say Gough was a decent PM.

If she ruins the lives of kiwis its neither here nor there to me. Its when an utter imbecile like Gillard gets in and decent hard working Australians have to pay more tax to support the no hoping, whining element so prevalent on here that I get annoyed.

This would be that "budget repair levy" which 2 conservative governments have also failed to remove (I think it started as some sort of flood relief levy in 2009)

Yep Turnbull is spineless. Abbott tried to cut spending but lacked the courage to stand his ground against the shameful whining over medicare charges and gave up.

I guess the Islamic museum of Australia advert popping up on every page of this forum rustles my feathers.
Probably, you're the one who posts about Muslims. Clearly have no idea about the scripting behind adverts.

Why? Plenty of people give birth and take off minimal time these days
A 9 to 5 job or even owning a small business is a little bit different and less important than being the Prime Minister of a country. I highly doubt that she, or any potential parent in this role could possibly keep track of everything that a PM would need to keep track of. Not to mention the fact that many pregnancies don't actually go to plan. What if she takes longer to recover?

Didn’t know yahoo was a small business

By your rationale dudes over 55 should also be banned due to risk of heart attacks. As for filling in, there are these things called deputy pm’s

Shouldn't be popping out kids or pumping them in if you're a Pm or leader of a country.

She could be Prime Minister for the next decade. Then she's 47 and it's probably too late.

Don't worry. If she dies in childbirth they'll find somebody to replace her.

That isn't the NZ public's problem. Now they are going to be stuck with a distracted PM.
Yep - PMs should solely focus on in-fighting within their fractured parties. It's worked for Australia so well...

You seem like a "There is no gender pay gap!" kind of man.
I'm questioning this specially because of her role as Prime Minister. In any other role, why would anyone have a problem with it? I would be questioning it if a male was prime minister too, would be just as distracted.

I just feel that if you want to be the leader of a nation, you must be 100% committed and solely focused on that role. If you're having children, that is a distraction. My concern is not due to a gender issue.

Does that mean we sack pm's going through divorce, death of a family member, cancer treatment, or following the tigs during a finals series?

Being distracted is a very low bar to sack people over

Fwiw imo politics is public and brutal. Internal party mechanisms would work to overthrow any pm who isnt up to the job, as we saw here with rudd and abbott

Bold isn't valid anymore :p. If they are seriously ill, they should either stand aside or be removed too. If the divorce is messy, then the same applies.

Thats the point though, they get removed IF it becomes a problem

You arr talking of getting rid of her because it might

Tony Blair's wife gave birth while he was in office, I know he's not a great example but we're not in uncharted water here. Plenty of other national leaders have raised small children while in office.
And if she can make it work, good on her. Just because I have doubts doesn't mean I don't want her to do well. For the sake of NZ, of course I do.
