News Jack Dyer Stand -Demolition Has Begun

I think the club has outgrown the name Dyer.
We now have 6 legends of the RFC.
Dyer
Hart
Bartlett
Bourke
Richo
Dusty
I think we somehow should acknowledge all 6.(5 now obviously while Dusty is still killing it).
How many Stands & Buildings in the re development? Surely we can come up with something that has all 6 named?
Its not only about past players. You named 6 I could name others like Vic Thorp, Basil McCormack, Jack Baggott and others who deserve recognition.

As do some past presidents and administrators like the great Ray Dunn who was a superb president in our clubs History.

With all these great Richmond people deserving recognition why are naming a who centre after someone not involved in our club history. Im sure Cooper was a great man a great Abiriginal activist but he wasnt one of us as far as I know. Was he even a Richmond supporter?

If we didn't name the building after Cooper then we wouldn't get the 30 million from both Governments.

i dont think jack dyers name should be on the new facility as it is not being used by the mens team in any way. jacks name on a centre that has nothing to do with the team he played for doesnt sit well with me

we'll have to name a room in the old KGI centre after him

In an ideal world I would like the Jack Dyer stand to remain there or be somehow integrated into the design.

But if it can't be, I'm pretty sure he'd want us to become the best club and win more flags over keeping an old stand.
so long as his name remains attached to the development it's o.k by me and from what i've gleaned from his son's comments o.k by him too.

i thought this was going to heavily strengthen the 1s. i was wrong

Pretty sure I read that they are doing up the "old" building as well for the senior team.
It's only 10 years old and has fantastic facilities already and it will be improved even more, they won't have to share and they get a new MCG shaped training ground.

I think the 1's will be doing pretty well out of it.

the journalists are acting like its for the afl team when the afl team isnt allowed to use the facilities. its for the women and kgi+ bhf

so nothing changes for the 1s

we are going to fall behind other clubs who are actually building state of the art facilities for their afl team

Good points in regards too Administration side of the debate.
The GR room for one.
Benny Gale just on his 2010 Statement alone.lol
Yeah not sure about any connection Cooper has with the club.
I have confidence with the current admin too get this right.

Been quite respectful and won't descend to personal abuse or rejoinders.
Won't be pasting other people's comments to score points.
It's an important matter.
NM has retained the brick structure at the base, it is well built, would easily endure another centenary.
We can amend the plans, retain the brick structure, and do the same.
Like I wrote the other day, the Roman concrete breakwater pier at the Civitavecchia port is 2000 years old, an engineering marvel.
These well-built buildings can last hundreds of years.

It *CAN* be kept, but quite simply, it's in the way.

In order to have an MCG sized oval, we need to clear some of the space it occupies.

It's not like it has the kind of history you're referring to either. It's really not that significant in the larger scheme of things and for most of it's life was little more than an overbuilt training shed.

the old boot studders room converted into coke and hookers room from next years GF celebrations... FACT

It'll be good to get them out of Dusty's place so we can let him concentrate on football and hopefully live up to his potential rather than wasting it like he is.

In addition to the new stand, the artists' impression definitely shows changes made to the end of the existing building (highlighted in red in the pic below).

I, like several previous posters, was still curious about how they were going to fit in an MCG-size oval. After experimenting a little bit, it seems the only solution is to slightly change the alignment of the ground to run a bit more N-S. The oval I've drawn (yellow lines) is the entire MCG playing arena, which I think has a touch more space between boundary and fence than necessary fwiw.

any more info on this

It was from around the time when the first news of this came out in 2018, I can`t find it now but I remember Benny saying that they will do it up as well as building the new facility.

Edit: Just found some info on it in the current article.

Stage one of the redevelopment will see the Punt Road Oval playing surface increased in size to MCG dimensions, demolition of the Jack Dyer Stand and replaced with new public seating and amenities, female changerooms, community facilities and a function space.

Stage two will see construction of an underground car park while stage three will see a new landscaped forecourt, refurbishment of the existing Swinburne Centre including a new sports hall, Tigerland Superstore and public entry. It will also see a new landscaped terrace behind the northern goals.

You need to add Jack Titus to that list... He's our greatest ever goal kicker with 970 from 264 games....

they are just going to paint the walls lol

The images show space in front of the stand going into enlarging the ground. It is sad though as the stand has been condemned something had to be done. I was more disappointed when the MCG members lost the long room, there was something surreal about looking out the windows standing in a spot you knew Bradman had stood and where Keith Miller had polished off many a beer. Even the urinals were big yellow porcelain structures with Sheffield 1912 embossed on them. I stood again where many of the greats of the past once stood
yep the MCG became just another cookie-cutter stadium, could be anywhere.

The SCG is world famous and recognizable because it merges the old and the new so well.

It is not easy, it takes imagination and extra effort, but it can be done.

Lol at the blokes who want a working bee of supporters to just grab the stand and chuck it on the back of a truck like they’re moving an old couch. Naturally any building work of this size done these days is a giant operation that is as much paperwork as physical work. “My mate Jacko with a tow truck” doesn’t really cut it. Also, trying to preserve, and build around this thing (or move it 😂) would cost (conservatively) about 3x as much as building from scratch, with a million times more limitations.

It’s a crumbling, ugly stand that due to our financial ineptitude for a very long time has been neglected and is now obviously beyond help.

I’m sure every time a new phase of the MCG upgrade happened there were people whinging about all the history you’re getting rid of, while now bragging to interstaters and internationals about how awesome our home ground is.

I’d like to see concrete standing terraces on the eastern and south eastern sides. They’re a cost effective way of allowing a lot of people to fit in and be able to watch the action.

I hope those new stand/facility has enough room for the general punter.

We have both the best and worst location for a training base in Melbourne.
