iI remember when Fed Square was proposed there where a group of people against the demolition of the Gas and Fuel building. Now think what you will about Fed Square but it's a huge improvement on the old Gas and Fuel monstrosity.
Edit - National Trust are still bitching about it.

Leave it to the experts. You're not an expert. Do you what modernism is. Is there any Melbourne landmark you wouldn't be happy to destroy, serious question.

So you know more than the National Trust and according to you it has no history? You need to do some research as you are talking rubbish with all due respect.
Some of the posts here are dumb and ignorant.
Yes some posts are dumb and your post is top of the list.

Nothing wrong with this architectural style

There's a lot wrong with it. To start with, there's just nothing remarkable about it. If that's heritage, then in 30 years all the copy/paste apartments being built today will also be heritage.

Thanks for your expert opinion. Don't worry about 110 years of history and WW2 history, just knock it down and build a stand covered in corporate logo crap.
That's what people want to see when they drive down punt road plus the fencing team who has a room there are more important lol.

It's already covered in advertisements. It's the world's biggest billboard. That's what you want to keep?

Have you got a proper argument or are you just drinking a tinnie yelling 'knock it down'.
An American citizen like Peggy O'Neil should not be allowed to make a decision to destroy some important Melbourne history.

Peggy had been an Australian citizen and living in Melbourne since 1989. Why can't she be trusted to do her job?

Not everything should be kept just because it's old.

I like the stand. But I like the club more.

I like the idea of taking my kids, my grand kids and sitting to watch a game on the ground that's been part of my family's life for 60 years.

I like the idea of being successful, winning premierships and sticking it up to the rest of the competition, which I know we can't do without state of the art facilities. We can't do it with that stand there.

I like that we are a club that does incredible work with indigenous youths and I'd like that to continue. What kind of regressive message does it send that we would rather keep a relic of a stand, built at the height of the stolen generation, than help indegnous youths that might otherwise fall through the cracks?

There's plenty of spaces and buildings across melbourne that should be protected and it's great that they are. This one isn't it.

Well the National Trust disagrees with you. You don't value the history especially the WW2 history where it was a prominent meeting place to watch Jack Dyer play to keep up morale.
It is not even that big. They plan to build another grandstand where it is so it is a thin argument.
The main reason given to knock it down is to make punt road oval have MCG dimensions, not a good enough reason.

;) :p :p
So, so true.
Great call.
I'm a long way from being an expert, but the hypocrisy in decision-making never ceases to amaze me.
There's probably dozens, or hundreds of statues with heritage value, but we rip those down at a rate of knots these days.

Not true at all. From Punt road you see s granstand. The new granstand would be covered with brand logos and built that way.
There are not 100's of heritage statues being ripped down at all. That is total rubbish. I couldn't name even one.
This thread us full of rubbish.

National Trust doesn’t have any skin in the game. Easy to say things need to remain when you’re not going to foot the bill to keep it usable

Not a good enough reason. The price to maintain it is not exorbitant. If we knock it down we become more a franchise club and lose history.

Surely you missed the part about increasing the size of the stand and improving capacity for staff and programs that the football club runs?

I guess they could just build a 10 story carpark/office building behind the stand to allow these things and then block the stand from view completely

Most posters on this thread have no respect for our history and Rhett Bartlett's position is very dissapointing.

And I think we should preserve the Oval as a meeting place to watch our club run around.

There are ways to remember and honour the past in ways other than keeping the space stagnant.
