And I think we should preserve the Oval as a meeting place to watch our club run around.

There are ways to remember and honour the past in ways other than keeping the space stagnant.
It is preserved. The club has not made any effort to work out a solution.
The starting point should be that the grandstand should be untouchable.

Most posters on this thread have no respect for our history and Rhett Bartlett's position is very dissapointing.
I have respect for our history.

There is no stronger history than connection to and spirit of place, maybe blood, but it's pretty hard to build a football club with blood ...

Man made structures will come and go, but the spirit of place lives on forever as long as stories are told and shared.

Doesn't matter if it's functional or not. The ground will look like GWS or Gold Coast without that stand.
I mean you have no idea what the club tried to do in the early stages of the design process

Keeping a giant non functional stand just for the ‘vibe’ is bonkers

Exactly right. If that stand could be retained and expanded to suit the clubs future needs, I’m absolutely certain that Benny Gale and the board would have gone down that path.
They’ve elected to knock it over and start from scratch as the costs would, in my opinion, have been extremely prohibitive. The stand as it is now is unusable and I’m sure the cost of improving it to suit our needs stops it being retained.
Totally behind the Club with this decision as the history of the stand and it’s significance to the Richmond Football Club would clearly have been taken into consideration.

Melbourne City council - Attach a giant ass monstrosity of a Hotel to the side of the heritage listed MCG ✔
Melbourne City council - Demolish a condemned unusable building just a few hundred meters away ❌

Also If the MCG has been allowed by council to demolish their Stands for a century there really isn't any argument they could win if this went to court

My understanding is the former MCG members pavillion, albiet built later in the 1920s, had heritage protection and was obviously demolished in the early-mid 2000's.

I would argue the members pavillion had more of a historic value to Melbournians than our stand and was in better condition before its demolition.

Architecturally it was built in a different era, but that doesn't necessarily make it of less architectural value.

That aside, my opinion on our stand is whilst it's shell is visually pretty (minus the advertising), components are dilapidated and the long term viability of the club who built the stand is of greater importance than its heritage value, and aspects of its heritage character can be re-used in construction. Story telling, materials and photos of the stand can also be incorporated into the museum.

As best as a win-win as it gets.

they should bomb the joint and build something more user friendly, and whilst they are at it fix up richmond station it is a disaster. the worlds best sporting city has the worldds worst train station.....

It's not 'giant'. It takes up small amount of space. We don't need MCG dimensions or a community hub for non-Afl sports.

It does matter if its functional. You are also ignoring there is a massive difference between poor and excellent modern architecture and design, and the function good architecture and brings.
The grandstand is architectually significant according to those who know.
The new grandstand would be an unimaginative pile of concrete built to maximise advertising.

It is architecturally significant for its era (minus signs and condition) but to look at that in isolation of other factors, to state function doesn't matter and to infer that any new development will have as much architectural value as Metricon Stadium is taking a very narrow view on reality.

Thanks for your expert opinion. Don't worry about 110 years of history and WW2 history, just knock it down and build a stand covered in corporate logo crap.
That's what people want to see when they drive down punt road plus the fencing team who has a room there are more important lol.

What world war 2 history? And saying because people went there to watch sport during WW2 does not pose any special significance.
