Strange example to use. Sidey's obviously done a great job keeping his extra-curricula activities hidden.
Steeles my favourite ever player, but having fantastic natural endurance glosses over a fair few sins.

**

No one would give a flying * if it was Steele at the races, and Steele like all of them would be encouraged to go out if he felt it benefitted his footy.

I don't think that's true if we're talking about the night before a GF.

This is the podcast he did yesterday. He co-owns a horse with Sidey, Adams, Murphy and Trent. A few of the boys like to add in some tips. Murph likes to find a good tip.

Talks about last friday, how he was so nervous about the game, first GF, and was 5 mins from the valley. But said, in hindsight, looking back now, he realises it put unwarranted pressure on the club, and would choose not to go. But said he is learning as he grows up with different experiences. What not to do. He's one that seems to learn lessons as he experiences them.

Also sounds like he should give up punting.

Said he is going to Bali with 8 teammates, then Byron, but his focus is getting fit and having a great season.
Said he was meant to be at the premiership dinner with the boys, but felt he had to take his missus out in the city for dinner. It had been a big few days, was time to give some time to his girl.

The club sets rules about what players can and cannot do during the season.

GF or not, if he didn’t break those rules he has done nothing wrong.

If going to the races helped with his personal preparation and mindset, good on him.

The game needs more personalities like Ginni (albeit one that doesn’t cross the line like the start of the year) and less dry and robot like ones.

That’s what they all say. Hope you’re right.
You have two types of people.
People that punt on anything because they are addicted.
And those who punt because they enjoy the whole scene, but are more in it for specific horses.
Think he is the latter. Listening to this, he really knows his stuff.

The hosts mentioned that lot of brisbane and richmond boys are into the whole scene.

A lot of the boys at the club are into racing.

I used to work at the valley, but never really watched a proper race. I should at some point lol

Not too many kids have as much pressure on them as Jack. Its crazy sometimes.

My initial reaction was that all people are different and have different ways of coping with stress. It could have led to an unfortunate incident, but so could riding a scooter to a mate's place, or going to the cinema.

Lots of players make mistakes; Sidebottom made a shocker during the COVID years and Jamie Elliott was arrested for urinating into a wheelie bin in Fitzroy a few years back. I suppose the issue is, does the player consistently make poor off field decisions that may endanger themselves or bring the club into disrepute?

Ginni seems to walk the tightrope. Hopefully he learns to make better decisions moving forward, but the signs are not all that good are they?

I used to work with Andrew Wills in the bank, way back in 1990. He liked racing too until it cost him everything.

Hope Gin has it under control but it’s a worry.

Stop being a catastrophist.

True, that is an extreme outcome. I do worry about Gin.
I don’t doubt his commitment and drive but he also has another side, most of us do.
It’s up to him and he can do whatever he pleases. Hopefully he helps us bag another flag or two.

I'm one that agrees Jack's choices the night before the GF were not the best look. However I think some are going too far.

The club can have rules in place for acceptable activities in players' personal time (though even that is a little questionable), if a player does not break those rules then there should be no consequences. It's fine for Fly to question the "look" of it, but in the end it's Jack's time, Jack's life and Jack's choice to make. The club can make decisions based on his performance and work ethic at the club, not what he chooses to do in his personal time.

I think Fly sees that even though he probably doesn't quite understand why someone would make the choice Jack did. That's fine, he doesn't need to, no one does, people get to live their own lives and make their own choices, even if they are in the public eye.
