Imo, Lukosius will return home to Adelaide.... just reckon it may end up being Port rather than the Crows... particularly with doubts over Marshall's concussions & Dixon cooked.

It is cap space due to the fact that GC has some big ticket items coming up.
Mac Andrews is going to be a million dollar player, Rioli a 800k player, and Rowell will be getting a raise.
What you're describing is cap management over a period of years (which every single club is actively doing). It's simply not a squeeze when Lukosius can stay right now if he wants to. But you're entitled to your own definitions if it makes you feel nice.

They are desperate to get rid of him but trying to get draft capital in return and hence not appear desperate.

It isn’t working.
Bottom line is Lukosius is not value for money on $950K pa, so any trade will need to be at a discount.

The latest Herald Sun article makes it sound like he’s keen to stay. Then again the media love to cover their bases

A lot of media speculation is really just leaks from clubs/players trying to either improve their negotiating position or cover their bases.

'keen to stay' can often mean that it doesn't look likely that a deal will get done at this stage.

Yeah, I would be very surprised if Luko stays. Campbell even did not mention Luko when talking about future. He actually said we got 3 quality forwards, King, Walter, Read and completely ignored Luko. Telling.

I wouldn't be surprised if the club is happy to let him move on, but I doubt they're looking at fire sale prices.

He mightn't fit into our (fully fit) forward structure, but that doesn't mean we can't use him down back or around the ground to reasonable effect (as well as a backup key forward).

Luko probably wont like that, and the salary cap he's taken up could probably be better utilised elsewhere, but it'd still be better for the club than accepting (say) Port's F2 for him, and if we're getting comments about him being happy to stay, I'd guess that serious unders all we're being offered at this stage.

If he's not set on returning to SA, then I wouldn't be too surprised to see him be part of the Rioli/Richmond trade. They clearly need talls, especially tall forwards and would have plenty of room in their salary cap.

I am pretty sure Luko would not go to bottom team.

GC, and the AFL made a really poor move when they allowed Geelong to take Bowes and a top 10 pick for a salery dump by GC.
It set a precedent for GC every time it looks like they are trying to free up cap money.

  • Luko wouldn't be drafted top ten in the 2018 draft if it was done again, so certainly not worth Adelaide's first this year or next.
  • When you realise he is being paid as if he is the best player in the club (or top 3) - his value decreases further.
  • Finally, his club doesn't want him, which finally bottoms out his value.
He's worth a crows second round pick max.

There is no logic that sits outside this - if there is please enlighten me.

The problem is that Luko apparently just wants to go under the radar his whole career, enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Gold Coast with little to no scrutiny on his weekly performance in the media or by fans. His overly relaxed demeanour makes it a very difficult job to get him to an AFL level with his clearly high but unrealised talent.

He would not like Port, who are ready to tear apart the club from Chair to Coach to Captain - all are in for a summer of abuse, but playing for Adelaide brings more profile. It's a pity there's no Tassie club for the lad to hide away at.

Edit: that's unfair on Tassie fans, they would be equally critical being an aussie rules state.

It isn’t working.

Problem is that if both clubs are into him, what we're prepared to cough up will come into his decision. So Suns will still likely end up getting a decent return because Luko won't want to declare he's leaving and a deal fail to get done.

Obviously I am an outsider to Gold Coast and don’t know everything but I have watched this guy rip Freo to shreds in games. He is a great size with a ridiculously good kick. Why on earth are get trying to kick him out the door?

Pretty obvios the coach Damien Hardwick doesn't think Luko's gamestyle will work with his preferred gameplan.

Agree, it was brain dead and the guy still has a job, crazy
