I'm no historian but I'd say for a decent chunk of it jewelry made from precious metals/stones has been pretty important as portable wealth. It's really only our nice, safe first world bubble that makes it seem so frivolous.

It's really hard to tell if you're being sarcastic or not. Just in case you aren't... I already have to wake up at 4:30 to get to work on time by car. I'll be cold in the ground before I choose to get up earlier than that and catch public transport to work just to save money on a car.
