Didn’t we then stick him on the wing because the inside midfield was stacked.
Yes....think he had about 1 game as a cba mid and crushed.... we were doing the same with Solgio till an injury also.

That's the problem with inside mids hard to get a shot unless a pure rebuild. Hobbs at essendon same thing. Davies suns.

Regardless of ability he wasn’t given a proper go, trademark Nicks treatment. Got 2 games of midfield, played well and kicked to a wing then out the team. Dowling getting the same treatment.

If you can't survive at wing, you don't have any genuine business being an inside midfielder. The days of someone who can only play on the inside are slowly going the way of a pure tap ruckman or the stay at home key forward, especially seeing the ever growing need for lads that can transition from the contest and do damage.

Don't reckon Crouch would survive long playing as a wingman...

Yeah, but who is the 18-24 year old Matt Crouch, who is only an inside midfielder and with no real scope elsewhere finding success in this league?

I did say dying, not dead.

Hately has found his level it's SANFL/VFL, for a bloke his size he's just not hard enough at the contest to play AFL midfield IMO, and that opinion is shared by at least 2 AFL clubs. Matty may have his limitations but he's a very proficient AFL level inside mid not to mention a former AA. The club's decision to move Hately on was the correct one.

Yeah, not disagreeing with any of that.

Just saying Crouch is proof of someone who is quality as an inside midfielder but ordinary as an outside mid... so you are agreeing with me. ;)

Ease up Dowling is only in his 2nd season and got to play 9 AFL games this season, whereas Hately came to the Crows after 2 years at the GWS (13 games) and had 3 years at the Crows to cement a spot.

I do think you’re harsh on Hately, he showed a bit when given a stint in the middle in 2022, but ultimately just not quite enough AFL-standard traits

Just wish we were as swift with moving on some of our other players currently on our list, as we were with him

Questionable pace, no penetration in his kick, kicking efficiency poor, what are his redeeming AFL traits in a decent AFL midfield rotation? Handy State level depth and we had enough of those already?

He was luckier than a lot of players...he got a 2nd chance.

You just described a bloke we just handed a two year deal to.

If you're talking Sam Berry you're a mile of the mark, he hits the contest with serious intent, tackles like a demon, has decent burst speed, decent hops and top end endurance. His kicking has been ordinary but even that was showing some improvement. I can only imagine your recollection of Hately the Crow is a bit foggy?

You actually make Berry sound half decent. No mention of the constant fumbling, which is a huge liability, especially in finals when the pressure is increased.

B- player at best.

So he's got a work on, perhaps that comes with more exposure at AFL level now it seems he's finally getting a decent crack and has become best 22.
He has way more AFL attributes than Jackson hence he got another contract.
The media were reporting he had interest from Collingwood so maybe other clubs rated him?

Good tackler, solid enough clearance player, accumulated well when put in the guts, thought he was a good kick in space and just generally didn't make too many mistakes? But yeah overall just kinda meh due to that lack of hurt factor and speed

Berry is more dynamic for sure with his strength and burst, and I didn't mind his kicking this year

He's still a flawed footballer though, with the lack of one-touch and inconsistent accumulation

Is vanilla the word you were looking for?;)
