You actually make Berry sound half decent. No mention of the constant fumbling, which is a huge liability, especially in finals when the pressure is increased.

B- player at best.
His kicking and ball handling are poor - but Berry does have genuine weapons (as Mutineer pointed out), which Hately never had.

If you can't survive at wing, you don't have any genuine business being an inside midfielder. The days of someone who can only play on the inside are slowly going the way of a pure tap ruckman or the stay at home key forward, especially seeing the ever growing need for lads that can transition from the contest and do damage.

Hately could play wing. Not amazingly but can get to the right spots and is good overhead.

If you're talking Sam Berry you're a mile of the mark, he hits the contest with serious intent, tackles like a demon, has decent burst speed, decent hops and top end endurance. His kicking has been ordinary but even that was showing some improvement. I can only imagine your recollection of Hately the Crow is a bit foggy?

Endurance? Not so sure. Berry is a mile of being an AFL standard midfielder, slow hands, fumbles badly, no outside game, small in stature.

Yes endurance, hops and acceleration.

Victorian Draft Combine:

2km time trial:
6:10 minutes
Running vertical leap (R/L): 81/94
20m sprint: 3.02 seconds
AGILITY
Berry – 8.24

10. Workhorse

Berry can run and run and run, proving his elite levels of endurance with a 21.7 in the Yo Yo test and finishing fifth in the 2km trial at the AFL Victoria Country combine.

Small in stature c'mon the guy is a bull.

He is small for a midfield bull, 182cm and its obvious when he matches up on opp mids.

From watching him he fades out in last quarters. I've cross checked his last 9 games (before that he was sub) and only once did he go over 11 fantasy points in Q4, implying he's hardly touched it.

I want Berry to succeed but his output for someone in year 4 and negative traits are really concerning.

I agree, and the fact he found himself there at two clubs backs that up. However, the whole "we didn't play him as an inside midfielder" is an excuse that doesn't carry any weight whatsoever for any kid that doesn't prove to be up to it. Inside midfield is not a specialised position.

When it comes to it, Hately didn't have the all round game to lock himself into a wing spot (or anywhere else, really) and the first major hurdle to having an AFL career is to win a best 22 spot outright.

Yes, and no. The one thing that is heavily tilting in Berry favour is that type of low offensive/high defensive output midfielder is having bit of a renaissance at the moment. Seeing every team in the top 4 has a player like that, whether it's Rowbottom at Sydney (19.1 disposals/5 clearances/7.6 tackles), Drew at Port (19.5 disp/4 clearances/6.2 tackles), Atkins at Geelong (17.4 disp/3.5 clearances/6.5 tackles) and Bedford at GWS (13.5 disp/2 clearances/7.9 tackles once he switched to 90% CBA's) who are taking up considerable (>50 % for a large stretch of time) inside minutes. Pressure/defense is a commodity at the moment.

It's just up to Berry to rediscover that 2022 defensive form where he's routinely putting up 7-8 tackles and 25+ PA's. Does that and there is certainly a niche there for him to fall into, and should allow him to survive Dowling and eventually Edwards challenge. Especially if Rankine moves into being a full-time midfielder.

I agree but those weapons are not enough to move us forward IMO. Way too limited.
I think his limitations will prevent him from becoming an A-grade player, but he's definitely an upgrade on Hately.

Berry is a mid-low grade AFL player. Hately is a good to very good SANFL/VFL footballer.

Times must be tough when you need to talk about Jackson Hately

Would have neither
It's not as if we're spoiled for alternatives right now.

Schoenberg is considerably worse. Pedlar has a higher ceiling, but was awful in 2024 - and then got injured. As a midfielder, Rachele makes a good forward.

Dowling & Taylor might prove to be better options in the long term, but it's very early days for them yet.

Our only real gun young midfielder is Soligo.

Hately was a pretty good overhead mark who didn't mind going back with the flight and was hard to move off the ball, so could have been a decent half-back/winger, if he could have kicked 10 meters further (or lower).

Just never really got his disposal by foot to a standard that could damage other teams. Not surprised to see him doing well in the lower leagues where that is less of an issue.
