Gresham is coming to us. Any benefit for us to overpay on the contract is to get a better pick. Not for us to downgrade our first round pick.

No way Essendon trade back from pick 11 to pick 19 for pick 51 when the saints have said they won’t match band 1 for Gresham and no other team is offering him close to that.

No, what you need to remember is that we're paying EXTRA so that we can get something better that usual for Shiel, who we will also be paying part of his salary.

That doesn't convert to you getting pick 8, nor us downgrading our first round pick. It translates to us either upgrading 30/31 to 14/20 pre bids, or us getting your second round straight up. The benefit for you is that you get pick 30/31 and Shiel instead of 33 by itself.

The only way St Kilda get pick 8 in the Shiel deal is if we get both your firsts and something on top of that.

As I have said many times, I don't think we end up with pick 13. But what you need to understand, is that we're paying him extra to get something out of the deal. Which most likely would be your pick 35-ish.

That makes a lot more sense than the idea that this whole "win/win rort" thing just finishing with Essendon paying more for Gresham to improve a pick they get straight back. Great result for Essendon, but it takes a lot of the win/win out of it for St Kilda who would be jumping through hoops just trade a good pick straight back for a has-been. In a void Shiel just isn't worth that pick, even if Essendon are helping to create it in the first place.
