Edwards was never a gun. If McLeod, Goodwin, Roo were not there he would have not been half the he was.
I don’t really agree but this post makes me think of Rory Laird.

We all loved him loose in the backline, but as a mid he’s pretty much a whipping boy on here.

If there were 2-3 guns ahead of him in the guts, would he be regarded as good ol’ criminally underrated Rory?

I still think he’s underrated on here. He’s usually in top 10 for both disposals (6th) and tackles (3rd)

Not one of your smartest posts IMHO,
He was a champion club man. Credit to him for turning his career around as even though he played in both premierships Blight had dropped him on a few occasions. In 2000 he became a totally different player. Ayres turned his career around and he became a champ of the club. But please he was no McLeod or Roo.

Wow, this has quickly turned into the ‘let’s embarrassingly devalue Tyson Edwards’ thread. He was an absolute GUN. End of story.

Underrated is an upgrade on whipping boy though, which I think he is here.
When has Laird been the whipping boy?? He isn't MacKay were everyone continually said he shouldn't be in the team. Some just see him as a very solid B grade midfielder whereas other see him as B+. If he continue with those disposal inside 50m he showed in the preseason matches, he will go to A grade midfielder from B+.

Laird isn't a whipping boy as much as his disposal sometimes prevents him from being mentioned with the elite of the comp.

Otherwise he is criminally underrated.

His disposal efficiency is great, his kicking efficiency not so.
His inside handball is elite, not many better in the afl if any.

Edwards was borderline elite. Not in the same category as Roo and McLeod not not far behind. We don't have any of these players currently (probably Tex of the last two years) so yeah it'd be great to have one.

Laird is A grade nothing more nothing less. Could win another jacket and even top 10 in Brownlow.

First you say he was never a gun, but then you say he became a champ of the club in the 2000s? So... you mean the latter two-thirds of his entire career?

Tyson Edwards was an exceptional player. If anything, "gun" is underselling him.

Sure, he wasn't McLeod or Ricciuto, but those two are on the shortlist for best Crows player in history. Edwards is on the very next rung below them, and comfortably so.

He was in the all australian squad, which objectively puts him somewhere from the 8th to 14th best mid in the comp for 2022.

Whether you uner or over rate him depends on where your (and everyone elses) line for B+ to A sits.

What did you say about Soligo?
It’s in this Soligo thread, but basically we’ve had very few mids with his ability to make great decisions and execute and he’s only starting his second year. That’s he’s a gun and is going to better than that, once he starts on average racking up 25 touches the rest of the industry will take note how good he is and that I love him. He will be better than Edwards.

But the more important take from what Blight said is the way we need to play, sure defence is important but the premiership sides have averaged over 16 goals. That’s not something you just flick the switch on, you’ve got to be producing that during the year and that means getting the ball into forwards quickly so your forwards aren’t out numbered.

Given our forward line is our strength we have to play to it. We played like that against West Coast, we pumped them and everyone took note how good we looked. We’ve just got to have the courage to play that way against better opponents and even if we cop some bad losses.

Yes. With Berry and Laird being 1 and 2 in the AFL for tackles in 2022, Soligo with his skill full manner of getting the ball forward, it is going to be the tight reliable midfield to the drive the team. Adding stints by the Rankchele twins is really going to make a midfield to keep oppos coaches awake at night.

The recruiters and the club must have really seen something in him early on ;)
