Should James Hird be given a second chance at coaching an AFL club?

Who in their right mind would re-hire an AFL coach they themselves sacked for underperformance, even if it was several years ago? And that is before you consider Hird's role in the doping scandal. This is a patently ridiculous idea.
Forget about the supplement scandal. It is mind boggling anyone would consider a person who has been out of the game 7 years, and only just came back this year in a part time mentoring role to be senior coach.

Clarkson under that scenario I would call desperate.

No one really cares about the performance enhancing properties. This is the cocktail of substances they gave the kids. There is no way they informed them of the potential risks to the short or long term health because most of them are not known. The kids couldn't have provided informed consent.

Tribulus is possibly safe for most people when taken at doses of 750-1500 mg daily for up to 90 days. Side effects are usually mild and uncommon, but might include stomach pain, cramping, and diarrhea. There isn't enough reliable information available to know if tribulus is safe to use for longer than 90 days or what the side effects might be.

Thymosin beta 4 (Tβ4) has been shown to be associated with tumor metastasis and angiogenesis; however, its role in pancreatic cancer has not been understood.

β-Lipotropin and γ-Lipotropin
Researchers have not studied the side effects of lipotropic injections. Information on side effects comes from anecdotal evidence from people who have used the injections for weight loss. Side effects may also vary from person to person.

Colostrum: While most people don't experience any side effects from bovine colostrum, there have been rare reports of problems in HIV-positive people such as nausea, vomiting, abnormal liver function tests, and decreased red blood cells. There is also some concern about the possibility of catching "mad cow disease" (bovine spongiform encephalitis, BSE) or other diseases from products that come from animals. "Mad cow disease" does not appear to be transmitted through milk products. But it is probably wise to avoid animal products from countries where "mad cow disease" has been found.
I admit to voluntarily trying tribilulus. Nothing. What did help, though, were regular, all the way down, squats, which I still practice daily.

Yeah, which I do think is ridiculous. It’s the organisation though, not the coach.

Your point is valid in that it’s disgusting, there are some peptides (adipotide for example) that have known to cause kidney failure in moderately large doses.

I do disagree that people don’t care about the performance enhancing benefits. Most in here are harping on about it.

Definitely the organisation.

I agree, they are totally missing the point. You're right, none of it is performance enhancing.

Sheeds coup complete. Like I kept saying on our board's Clarko thread, it was all about their internals.

Sheeds says to Barham "What, are you gunna let povvo Norf get Clarko are ya, are you weak, are you a real Essendon man or not?" and the doddery old linament sniffer fell for it hook line and sinker and blew the joint up.

Sheeds then immediatley iced any Clarko play (which he knew was impossible anyway) and set to work picking off the anti Hird types one by one.

Now its going to Sheeds and Adrian with Sir James, Spike and Solomon again, just like the good old days in 2000.

Hilarious, but also well played Sheeds you cunning old sot.

For a former journo you are a terrific fan fiction writer. Keep it coming :thumbsu:

That peple are still talking about what happend 10 years ago
Of course they are. That's how badly he screwed up.

I mean, Adolf Hitler is "living rent free" in peoples heads if that's your definition.

I very much believe in learning from errors, no matter how seriously they are punished, and even more do I believe in redemption. We should be much more about education and reforming as opposed to guilty for life as all it would do is not give hope and drive those people further away in a negative way for society. Of course there are exceptions though.

Having said that, I'm not sure it would be the club's (or Hird's) wisest decision to make him head coach at the moment, at all. They would need so many bulletproof personal and structures in place around him to make it happen I reckon.

He also watched dozens of VFL games in last 2 years with his son Tom playing.

You have to admit that’s impressive
This is the dumbest shit I've heard since the last time Hirdy coached.

I've watched every AFL game every weekend for about 10 years. Surely I'm a shoe-in to coach a side to a premiership.

**** me. Watching footy is impressive.

I think if Hird came back, we'd probably lose about 10,000 intelligent supporters.

We'd gain, however, about 20,000 bandwagoning morons, so financially it would probably be a win.

Correct. And the 10,000 would come back instantly if you start winning. Hird would definitely be a net positive for memberships - at least initially. But external reactions are just as important as internal support.

Mussolini or Tojo (may as well get the Godwin trifecta after someone snagged Hitler a few posts up) could be Collingwood coach if they delivered flags for all I care. But the problem is, they would be hanged before they'd get on the podium.

It's not your internal camp that you should be worried about, it will be the bloodthirsty hounds suddenly barking at your door that you unleashed for absolutely no good reason. No other coach you appoint is going to get the media to dredge up 10-year-old drug stories.

Member when Paul Little tried the whole 'us vs them' shtick that Sheedy et al. are trying to push now? I member. And that worked out amazingly. Yet here people at your club are, pushing for it again.

People historically hate/d Collingwood because we were successful arrogant pricks as well as being the stereotypically the "working class" (Irish catholic) club. This was an identity supporters can rally around. If they hated us because we had a side gig running a human trafficking operation, it would be a different story.

This artificial "it's good if they hate us" agenda that an old drunk is trying to push needs to be recognised by Essendon fans for the repeat of nonsense that you already tried and which failed spectacularly.

Yeah but you’re not a walking talking living legend of the game ..are you

Send them your power point presentation. You might get the job. Any Auskick medals? :grinv1:

This!

And all those media commentators saying "it's ok if they go through a process and find he's the best man for the job" really need to ask themselves what sort of process would recommend a guy with no recent relevant experience.

If he wants to coach again he needs to do what Voss did and be an assistant for a good few years. Then you can at least start to think he might be appropriate from a football standpoint.
