The gall, the entitledness from first nations people, those who pretend to be and others that woke on their behalf never ceases to amaze me on days like today.

Why is nothing ever said about 'warfare', 'trackers' & 'native police'? Aboriginal death is death right? Or it only fashionable to speak loud about what the white fellas did to first nations people and try to hold retrospective guilt on todays people.

Heinous, horrible atrocities happened......but what do you want the rest us to do about it? Have government apologise again in parliament? Build a time machine to correct all the wrongs of the past?

Change the date? How bout you pick another day to mourn the very people you never met and knew.

To be fair though I don't really care about the date....Australia Day could be the next day or some other day.....but if you change it, that day will get hijacked with the same shit that's happening now.

If it is to be changed...the day should be centred around the people that made this country into what it is.....the migrants. It's no coincidence that we have the best of everything living in this country. Best healthcare, best food & drink, best way of life, job opportunities, low unemployment. It's these people.....past, present and emerging that we should thank and celebrate.

Pay the Rent is an Indigenous organsation. It's Indigenous people asking for it.
If you want to pay them money, go for it.

I have the family's Australia Day "guess the number of pavlovas in the jar" competition to run.

Well I will consider it. But then again, I will also consider the money I already pay in income tax that goes into programs that benefits Indigenous people.

By the way, the Pay the Rent website expects rent for any weddings, ceremonies and conferences on top of annual rent so you may want to consider the pavlova jar comp as fitting into one of those categories.

It never was and never will be
That's a really weird way to agree the date really doesn't matter.

The day a bunch of criminals got off a ship has no relevance to me, so the day has little meaning to me.

Republic Day 2023 should replace it.

I am not sure why anyone would want to keep it on Jan 26. Put aside the arguments for and against, surely we are at the point where it's become divisive enough that it is no longer a day where people can comfortably 'celebrate'.

The 'patriotic' Aus flag celebration seems to have picked up in the face of the opposition to the day, and earlier events such as the Cronulla riots etc... I remember Aus day BBQs as a kid, there was at most some green and gold and that's it.

We need a day that commemorates our indigenous past, European settlement and subsequent immigration waves that have made this country great. Finding a day proves difficult (May 8 seems too bogan for me). The only sensible thing to do, is become a republic, change the flag, change the Anthem (only because it's shit) and celebrate on that day.

If they do this right and keep as many happy as they can, it's a line in the sand moment where we can all move on together.

I truly do not give a shit. Some people really give a shit, which means we should probably just do it.

I am certain that Australia Day and the Australian flag will change in my lifetime.

That's my favourite flag too

Bring on the Republic

How dare they object to the invasion and seizure of their lands, the spread of disease, the removal of their children?

How dare they.
Why is nothing ever said about 'warfare', 'trackers' & 'native police'?
Because, last I checked, people invaded tend towards getting more sympathy than the invaders.
Aboriginal death is death right? Or it only fashionable to speak loud about what the white fellas did to first nations people and try to hold retrospective guilt on todays people.
This is pretty dumb.
Heinous, horrible atrocities happened......but what do you want the rest us to do about it? Have government apologise again in parliament? Build a time machine to correct all the wrongs of the past?
... how about you ask them, seeing as a rather substantial number of them are asking us as a nation to change the date of Australia day?
Change the date? How bout you pick another day to mourn the very people you never met and knew.
Tell you what: how about you don't try and minimize their trauma, and I won't ban your obnoxious arse for espousing racist shit on my forum?
To be fair though I don't really care about the date
Yeah, nah.

Absolutely celebrate the migrants that comprise modern Australia. That's actually a terrific idea; it demonstrates the folly of trying to keep Australia white.

If you try and sneak your racism like this again, you won't like the outcome.

By all means change the date, but I don't expect the people who protest against it to feel any better whatsoever. If they're getting this upset over events that happened 200 years ago, they're the type to be perpetually outraged over anything.

So change the date if you want, just don't expect your life to improve whatsoever.

Just let me have my day off work...

But you support (from the other side) those same events from 200 years ago....that is what you are celebrating...you get that right?

Melbourne Cup started in the 1800's?
ANZAC Day?
Labor Day?

You see the hypocrisy, right?

If this is an issue, then since we are a democracy why not just come up with an alternative date and put it and the current date to a referendum same day as the voice referendum? Picking our national day should be something all Australians decide not just base it on who complains the loudest from either side of the argument.

I take umbrage that today is called “Invasion Day”.

The First Fleet landed on 18 January before realising how shit Botany Bay is. Either that day or when Cook planted the flag in 1770 was Invasion Day.

If anything, today is a celebration in a significant upgrade in real estate, which as a property professional I somewhat respect, but I’m not sure why there’s such a song and dance about the date.

I don't 'celebrate' any of those days but to correct your ridiculous claim about hypocrisy:

- Melbourne cup happens every year, it's not like it happened once 150 years ago and is only a public holiday in Victoria anyway. I live in Brisbane.

- ANZAC day is a relatively sombre event that celebrates the sacrifices of our armed forces. Whilst it originated with the original ANZACs, it's gone on to be far more than that, although I do find it a bit odd that we also have Remembrance day for the same purpose, which isn't a PH but whatever. I'm sure someone can fill us in on this one.

- Labor day. Dunno when this originated and too lazy to do a Google search but happy to have the day off.

By all means, change the date, call it 'invasion Day' if that makes you feel any better. Don't expect me to feel guilty over something that happened 200 years ago and let me have my day off. I'll probably just spend it playing computer games and arguing with strangers on the internet.

Remembrance day is observed across the commonwealth commemorating the end of WWI. ANZAC day commemorates the first big conflict Aussies and Kiwis were involved in and now broadly all who have served/dies etc.. all all wars and conflicts.
