This is simply not the ken of 6 weeks ago. I am more certain than ever that post showdown ken was told try something diff with some young performers otherwise you are out ....

I was thinking its either that, or Ken having made the finals with 12 wins, and is guaranteed he will be here next year, so he decided **** it, I am going to give the kids a go and find out who can play and who of the perennial in and out of the side players we are going to trade away or delist.

I'm not sure about that.

If you have 38 on the list at the start of the season, as we did, then you can have 2 nominated rookies without a long term injury upgraded. We did that with Houston and Eddy. Houston has been given a contract and I'm pretty sure Eddy is still a nominated rookie. Lienert upgrade is because Frampton is on the LTI. We can still upgrade one rookie on the post game 11 rule that you can upgrade without an LTI.
Rucci's words, not mine; I'm inclined to trust his info.

Go back and listen to his post showdown presser. He literally said the opposite to what has and is unfolding

...and aim for the :checkeredflag: next year.

The weird thing is, our back 6 was pretty solid at the beginning of the year and our defence has been the best in the league. I'm hoping that sticking Lienert, Bonner and Dougal back there doesn't upset the side too much. I felt it was our forward line that needed tweaking more than anything else.

Excited to see this kid in action though. He's looked good at SANFL level. Is the goal one day to have a team full of headbands? Austin and Jasper hopefully not far away.

The doubt is about Eddy's status. If he is classified as a nominated rookie then Rucci is wrong. I don't think you can change status once you become a nominated rookie based on what I have read in the 2012-16 CBA

Ken has said at the start of the year that the players wanted him to be more consistent and have less chopping and changing (I think he was mostly talking about game plan but it could equally have applied to players. .

I feel like he just got to the stage where he said **** it. It's my job on the line not yours. I've had enough.

I'd like to know what has taken place behind closed doors, but we may never find out. I wonder how revealing the end of season doco will be.
just wait for the next installment of Inside doco. ;)

Houston and Eddy were both pre-season rookie upgrades, and as far as I know, that only reverts at the end of the season. I don't see what either of them have to do with the mid-season rookie upgrade that we're using on Lienert, or the potential upgrade in place of Frampton.

It won't happen, but imagine if this somehow works to perfection and we win the flag? How surreal would it be to hear names like Marshall, Bonner and Lienert being called up to receive their premiership medals.

At this point, if we're to make the GF, it will be with SPP, Houston & Marshall in the team and playing well at minimum I'd have thought.

In any case, great to see we're not going back to the same well over & over.

Ok I went back and reread your quote from Rucci and I misread what he wrote.

Before today he was right, Port could upgrade 2 more rookies, one under the post game 11 rule and one once the club put Frampton on the LTI. I read it as after this move.

But the radio report was that Lienert has replaced Frampton as he gone onto the LTI. Re reading Rucci's article, he is right the smart way to go is to leave the Frampton LTI replacement open and use the post game 11 rule to upgrade Lienert as the Frampton replacement could be used if we get another big injury this week or during the final.

Good Luck and congrats to the lad.You would expect he must be a huge chance to play if all is correct

I guess we now know when Ken's trust in the group ran out or he got the call to say could you pop by my office mate. (My patience ran out a while ago).

Will be interesting to see what happens now. Finals finds you out if you are not ready.

Are we glancing at our cards, looking at the pot and going I'm all in boys cos we could see doing what we were doing wasnt getting us where we wanted to be going, or are we sending a message for next year?.

Said a while ago this team needed a circuit breaker (good or bad).

This crazy mixed up season may just mean this may work. Hard to put old heads on young shoulders in pressure situations though.I have been one calling for changes (maybe not all at once) for a while so I am on board.

Makes for interesting times though and gives you just that bit of excitement when you head off to the footy and heck if I find the joy maybe the players have/will too.

It's this.

At the start of the season, the players came to him and said 'We don't want training to be so intense. We want it to be fun. We want stability in the side.'

So that's what they got. He backed them in to perform when they got what they wanted.

After the Showdown loss, he got jacked of the same players letting him down every single time in terms of defensive and contested effort when the heat was turned up. He said the best thing about young players is that they 'give you what they've got'.

Could we say the same thing of the players that have been dropped? He gave them one pass against Essendon on the proviso it wouldn't happen again. And it did. So then he said, 'Right ****ers, we played it your way, now we do it mine.'

The issue was that up until the Showdown, the Essendon loss was seen as an aberration and the players commitment wasn't really questioned. Yes, there were losses, but they could be put down to individual effort.

But the Showdown was a systematic failure across the entire board. You don't get smashed by +40 in contested possession because the other side is that much better. They just gave up and said it was too hard.

Thinking about this a bit more as I had to reread Rucci's article, if this is an upgrade under the post round 11 rule and not to replace Frampton on the LTI then, this could be insurance rather than a guarantee he is going to play.

What if Pittard and Broadbent's injury is worse than put out to the public, Hombsch has done his hip again and with Jonas out for 2 weeks and Ken not wanting to play Jacko down back it could just be insurance??

I think I am going to wait until the side is selected before I call it as a done deal that he play against the GC.

So much for Chad spilling the beans. :)

It was a pretty obvious call up based on the form he has shown all year. The surprising thing is we have the balls to make the call...the last three weeks have regained my faith in the club, just hope they don't stuff it up by bringing the same old names that have let us down for years .

Doesn't surprise me, we've had 12-13 players play in defence this season and maybe 2-3 have had good seasons in Jonas, Houston and maybe Clurey. The rest have almost all been complete and utter garbage this year or played severely out of position.

Broadbent, Hartlett, Trengove, Clurey, Toumpas*, Austin, Bonner, Pittard, Howard, Bryne-Jones, Hombsch, Jonas, Houston.

That is an amazing amount of revolving door action by Bassett.

Except the Melbourne game was between Essendon and the Showdown. Only Melbourne easing back so many players from injury, plus tired from backing up from Alice stopped that being a similar debacle on the scoreboard.
