Malcolm Holmes says "come at us bro!".

Dear Members and Supporters

Below is a media release that will be issued on Monday morning in response to an article in the Courier Mail on February 18:

It is extremely disappointing that the Courier Mail has chosen to publish this story in the absence of any evidence.

These claims from a “self-confessed drug dealer” are completely unsubstantiated and do not deserve publicity.

We have no reason to believe the word of a” self-confessed drug dealer” but if anyone, including the Courier Mail, has any evidence with regards to this, or any other matter, it should be referred to either the AFL integrity unit or the Queensland Police.

Kind Regards,
Malcolm Holmes
CEO – Brisbane Lions

Okay, I admit it...I'm currently doing the painkillers.

Admittedly because every step I take causes my sinuses to throb in agony, but why let that get in the way of a good story?

I think we're shooting the messenger a bit here.

Hammo could have written that article to sound a lot worse than it did, without making anything up.

If someone else had gotten wind of this idiot cousin of Ash's something really nasty could've been written.

Hammo's article makes it pretty clear from the get go that this isn't a person with much credibility.

I don't think it was necessary for Holmes to take a swipe at the Courier-Mail. They'd published a decent quote from him which I think gets his point across pretty well. I don't think we want to start the season by getting into a slanging match with Queensland's biggest newspaper, even if they started it.

In which case, I'd suggest the ethical thing is not to post the story until you get some sort of corroboration. God help us if papers just start reporting every bit of innuendo and rumourmongering from questionable characters on Facebook.

They didn't have to publish it with such little evidence though. I think that the shot at the CM is justified on that front alone. Many articles must be written without being published. That editor must be getting a bit of a slamming at this stage.

IMO - it seems to be the direction of print media.
  • pluck a story
  • sub edit a catchy head-line
  • pad the story with mayo/tabasco/wasabi
  • dies its own death in a day or two due to being unsubstantiated
Guess it was always headed in this direction being unable to cope with the speed [no pun intended] of the interwebby and its so called social media forums.

This annoyed me the most:

"Lions chief executive Malcolm Holmes refused to confirm if the club would investigate the claims or pass the allegations on to the AFL."

That gives an impression that the club is either ignoring or trying to cover up a problem when, in fact, the reason MH "refused to confirm" is that he would not respond to an unsubstantiated claim. The headline supports the impression of a cover-up or avoidance by MH.

Yeah, if he says no it implies we're ignoring or covering up something. He says yes it implies there's something to investigate, despite having no credible reason to at this stage.

This whole story is making more and more sense in terms of the recent history of our club. Clearly drugs of the psychedelic variety were involved in the decision to dump our Triple Premiership Guernsey in favour of the derided paddlepop lion. The decision to retain that jumper, in the face of enormous opposition from those who would endorse a return to the Triple Premiership strip, is also starting to look suspicious, in light of Jason McGrath's revelations.

Perhaps the AFL or even Malcolm Holmes might launch an invetsigation along the lines of this one. I know which part would be played by Hammo

Happy to dump the blame squarely on the previous administration also ;)
