Lol I just caught up on the last two weeks of Jeff tweets
Malcolm Turnbull now also on his sh*t list, telling Setka how to run the CFMEU, still pretending NSW aren't under restrictions

It's like his Twitter is also paid for by Murdoch

Good to see he’s taking an active interest in trade week.

Jeff at it again, dropping a response to Hawk's trade week bombshells before anything has actually happened.

Man can't stay out of a headline, and doesn't care how he gets there.

It maybe unrelated, but don't some people call in a therapist for their dog if they continually crave bad attention?

From yesterday

Dear Hawkers,

A while between letters to you. Sorry, but no point writing just for the sake of doing so.

Three weeks until the end of the football year which runs from the 1st of November to the 31st of October each year.

Unless something untoward happens in the next three weeks, we will finish the year with a very small surplus on our football operations. To be quite honest, that is a remarkable achievement given the last two years we have experienced.

So, I would like to thank you all for your continuing support of the club we love.

Our Tasmanian members have had more access to games than ever before, as did our members in other states last year, all driven by COVID closures and restrictions on travel and crowds.

That said, on behalf of the Board, I thank the administration led by Justin Reeves for the time and effort they have put in to deliver that small surplus.
Our sponsors led by Tasmania, Nissan, iiNet, adidas and a basket full of supporting sponsors including relatively new sponsor KFC have again all stuck by us and we are very conscious of their continuing support in these challenging times.

We all hope next year will be easier than the last two and we can attend games and functions as we would do normally.

In the meantime, I trust we can all continue to support our sponsors in the way they have supported the club.

I can’t wait to get back to Tassie for a week of travelling when we are allowed back into the island state, and I have bought my Nissan Pathfinder replacing the BMW that rolled over me. I am also awaiting the arrival of my new adidas shoes for walking, as I feel I have walked to the moon and back over the last few months and my current shoes are falling apart.

Sadly, our commercial investments at Caroline Springs and Waverley and the gym we lease out on the ground floor of our building have all been closed for months over the last year, therefore we have received very little income from those operations. That said, we will still record a surplus in our consolidated accounts.

So again, thanks to your continuing support and that of our sponsors, the Hawthorn Football Club will finish this year in a slimmer but positive financial position.

The football department is also very healthy. Under Rob McCartney, our Head of Football, and Sam Mitchell, our Senior Coach, we have completed the recruitment of assistant coaches to guide our team over the next few years. Most of the names you will know. All have great experience and great enthusiasm. We are lucky to have them and together they make a great team.

Assistant Coaches:
Adrian Hickmott
David Hale
Robert Harvey
Chris Newman

Head of Development: Andy Collins
Development Coach: Andy Otten
Specialist Coach: Damian Monkhorst

Sam Mitchell is settling into his new responsibilities well. He has reached out to many, while working with his colleagues and List Manager Mark McKenzie in determining what we might aim for in the trade and draft periods.

So, in both the administration and football departments, a quiet confidence, but a great deal of calmness and professionalism as you would expect.
I have the pleasure to continue to lead a collegiate Board with a wide range of experiences.

Sadly, Radek Sali has informed us of his intention to move with his family to spend the majority of his time in northern NSW. For that reason, he has decided not to stand for re-election at the forthcoming AGM in December.

We will miss Radek, as he brought to the table entrepreneurship, as well as his passion for the club. Radek always has us thinking outside the square, which ensures we do not become complacent.

So, we thank Radek, and wish he, Helen and their daughter Elodie good fortune with his move and limitless ventures. They will always be welcome at the club when they are free to do so.

We are fortunate that Simon Taylor has nominated to fill the vacancy and will offer himself to members for election as the Board of Directors' endorsed candidate at the AGM.

Simon Taylor is a Tasmanian by birth, having played football with the Tasmanian Devils in the VFL before joining and playing with our Box Hill Hawks, from where he was recruited to Hawthorn and played 86 games for us between 2004 and 2010.

Simon is a Director in Consulting at PWC with a decade’s experience in Australia and the USA.

Importantly, Simon has continued his involvement with the club after his retirement, through the Hawthorn Football Club Young Executive Committee which, among other objectives, supports players with work experience and career transition post football.

If elected Simon will bring a youthful, Hawthorn and commercial experience to the Board. His election also recognises the Board’s wish that we can welcome a person from one of our voluntary committees to Board level.

Simon, his wife Portia and their two children Alfie and Paloma live in Melbourne. You will hear more about Simon as we approach the AGM, but he offers himself with the full support of your Board.

I should also mention Board colleague Tim Shearer has re-nominated for re-election to the Board.

Tim joined the Board three years ago and heads up our Hawthorn Foundation. He has taken it to a new level and introduced a team of people raising funds not only for the construction of the Kennedy Community Centre, but when that is built in 2023, to build the funds for the needs of the club for decades to come.

Tim therefore is very important for the club’s long-term success, so the Board and I hope that when the time comes, you will see fit to re-appoint Tim to allow him to continue his work on behalf of us all.

So, back to the football department. We are in the trade and, soon, the draft activities of the football year.

This List Committee will have the fundamental responsibility of deciding on the type and position of players for our next tilt at silverware. This group will report to the Football Committee under the leadership of Board member Richie Vandenberg.

The Board will be kept informed of both committees’ thought processes, but we delegate trade and drafting to those we employ who are better qualified than us to make the necessary decisions. Obviously, we will keep members informed as the weeks unfold.

We may be surprised at some of the decisions made but be assured they will be made after careful consideration of the club’s future needs by those we charge to make such decisions.

In finishing, I just want to state again and re-enforce: thank you for your ongoing support, that of our sponsors and our employees.

Your club is in very good shape. We are looking forward to next year with controlled excitement.

Stay well all until I write again,

Surprised when anyone with a pulse an an accreditation is conditioning us thus?

I’d be interested what the mentioned players have been told. It has a very Jack Elliot ring to it

There was no need for that email - could of waited until trade period and the draft was done and dusted but no, had to open the club up for scrutiny again.

Haven’t heard from any other President - would be nice if someone told him to STFU but not a person there who seems to be able to control him

no one enrages me like he does

The Simon Taylor board announcement is at least some positive. However, it highlights once again that there are good Hawthorn people in the upper echelons of the business community - why the hell can't we entice one of them to step up and be president. Granted Simon is 39 and probably too young to take on an unpaid role such as this - but there has to be someone out there who has the acumen and the time.

the kicker he opens by implying he doesn’t just write for the sake of it. ‘I’m not a prudeBUT’

Because you have to be in the Kennett click.

Because you have to be in the Kennett click.

The board certainly appear to be hand picked and in his corner. I'd give anything for a credible challenger to put themselves up for a vote. We have refreshed so much leadership at the club - a new president would really round it out.

It would be good to get some regular fans with a bit of board experience to nominate so that we have a voice in the room. Simon seems like a good appointment though.

This was beyond stupid. Instead of the team working in the background to get a good deal for an established player we now come across as having a fire sale of anyone over 26. He just made it harder for the team to rebuild.

If you think Jeff Kennett is making list management decisions you are sorely mistaken. There are many legitimate problems that you can take issue with him on but that isn't one of them.

I think people are more taking issue with the fact that his comments on our trading position weren't really helpful or needed.

I agree that of all his faults this is way down the bottom of the list.
