Why mess with supporter's heads? A president opening up the possibility of relocation is like a red rag to a bull. Doesn't he understand the impact of a statement like that on supporters? Players, coaches, administrators come and go but supporters are there for life.

Money talks. You lock the deal in take the cash and then spend the next 3 years telling the Melbourne members how important they are and how we are fighting for more MCG games etc.

I absolutey understand your point - but can you name me another club President who negotiates by using the absolute foundation of the club as a bargaining chip? Even if it is just tactical - for a club that had its members fight so bloody hard to escape an AFL-sanctioned death sentence, to just so flippantly discuss a relocation is a slap in the face of so many who did so.

Do you think he is saying this so he gets run out of town like his mate Eddie? A quick and easy exit you think?
I don’t think there’s any strategy behind it. Like he often does he talks before he thinks. He always has (who can forget some of his Clarko gaffes) buts it’s gotten a shitload worse these past 3 years. There’s a far smarter and more nuanced way to keep the Tassies sweet than publicly saying you’ll consider moving the club down there and alienating 97% of the base.

I get your point but not many other presidents are trying to save a 4 mill per year easy sponsorship either.

ok girls and guys
i am in HBT , follow the Saints . There is A lot of pressure on Tas govt to do something about an AFL to commit to team in tassie ( will never happen )
Thanks to Mike Fitzpatrick when he was chair of the AFL , Gold coast came in , then GWS. He told those around via CEO Demetriou , that Tassie was a captured market and No growth in $$$$$$ ( **** the loyalty )
AFL ego in taking on Sydney market

got North in Hobart and Hawks in Launie. Sucking Millions out of the state ,time to review sponsors deals
especially the HAWKS which has gone stale ,reduction to attendance and members sold 8 000

Andrew Willke says No $$$ from his Canberra purse until AFL commit
He is putting his $$$ behind soccer
i happy for both teams to leave

Kennett just piss and wind , looking after Both sides
Hawks will never move here , due to Members
when hawks 1st came ,not travelling well financially or member base
good for both of us but time to change

I get it’s a big deal - and I’m pro-Tassie in its current form. There just had to be a better way to approach it than this.

A lion’s share of members reading the headlines that are everywhere now aren’t going to search for the nuance and have every right to be pissed off.

If you think it is hard for non Victorian teams to retain players wait until they start a Tasmanian team. They will be a perennial basket case due to lack of revenue. And they will be a drain on the league at a time when revenue is dramatically lower than in recent times. There is no chance a tassie team
Is viable in the near future and little hope beyond that. No one seems to be able to build a viable business case or else this would have already happened. I get the politics but there has to be some logic and I’m yet to see anyone put forward a case for a team that can address the clear issues against it.

I got a reply to an email from Jeff. Obviously I won't post it word for word, but basically it was along the lines of 'its only early in negotiations, AFL+Tas govt need to figure out their plans together 1st, then Hawthorn come in and work out our situation once the AFL+Tas govt have a clearer resolution on the pathway forward'.

I'm hoping/assuming the issue for us that Jeff/the board needs to work out is more based around the number of games in Launceston+Tassie sponsorship. Clearly though mentioning relocation+a name change, particularly as the leader and in a public forum, is just not a nice thing for supporters to hear, regardless of whether it is or isn't a negotiation tactic, its cruel to float it as an option because it just should never be on the table in the first place.

I'd recommend emailing Jeff via: jeffk@hawthornfc.com.au as he seems willing to respond, so if you have any concerns you want to express to him, this seems a decent way to get the views of us members, to the leadership of the club.
