I would have thought the Ellis compo decision today should give Essendon pause if they want him to fulfil his contract in 2020. Especially given Ellis has been, well, playing football and Daniher has not.

A free agent vs a contracted player. What the hell are you on about with that comparison in the first place.

Swans first plus 2nd round pick swap or a bit player will be the deal probably. Hope he does well. Exciting player.

Which clubs are historically easy to deal with? WC and Hawthorn. It's been a fairly successful formula.

Yep. When we tell a players we’ll get them to us it generally happens. We tend to pay full freight in trades though.

The comparison is apt if you want to keep Daniher and claim FA compo in 2020.

And you won 4 flags. Sometimes you also snag absolute blinders like Mitchell, who like Heeney, was stunted a little by too many similar types in the midfield.

Heeney may have a bit more flxibility/slightly different skills, but if he had developed as an onballer from day 1 at a good club hungry for mids, I reckon he'd be one of the best in the comp.

Also, I'm pretty sure that if Wingard stays fit he will return to his AA level form. Even if he doesn't, you've gotta have a crack, it's a strategy that on balance has worked wonders. I think about the crucial roles Jetta, Cripps, Yeo and even Vardy played in '18.

One thing I will give Dodoro - he's managed to oversee Essendon's list management for nearly two decades of dismal failure (he had essentially nothing to do with 2000) and not only miraculously keep his job, but even get people on the internet to call him a 'master.

That is some dark magic.

Puzzling thing is he got promoted he should stay away from the draft and just worry about the list management side of things

I’m not sure how this gets done. Sort of expecting this to be a stalemate and Daniher stays with Essendon.

Essendon’s key forward stocks are so slim that they just can’t afford to lose him without getting a significant haul back. Can’t see them winning a final without him with the way their list looks. I’m not sure pick 5 and pick 25 or whatever it is is a significant enough deal. Pick 5 and 9 you’d think about it.

Can’t imagine Sydney will deal two top ten picks for a guy who has played 10 games in two years and is no guarantee to get back on track. If he was coming off a season like 2017 when he kicked 60+ goals and won AA, I think they’d happily pass those picks over. Don’t see it happening after two injury riddled seasons.

Someone will probably budge, someone usually does. Going to be a long two weeks with this and the Kelly one I imagine.

This post is delightfully paradoxical

The second paragraph outlines how important Joe is to the future of Essendon and we'd be mad to lose him for anything but top dollar.

The third insinuates that there's a very real possibility that Joe will never recover to his previous best and Sydney would be mad to pay top dollar.

There's something in this :)

Just trying to look at it from both sides. Honestly I can’t see how a team could trade two top 10 picks for a guy with his injury record. Essendon will either take what they currently consider unders and be pissed off if he stays fit for the foreseeable future and gets back to his best, or he’ll continually get injured and Essendon will make out like bandits. It’s a magic beans purchase at the moment. Or obviously they could keep him. Whichever way it ends up going it’s going to be a nightmare for all the neutrals.

If rumours true and Swans are set to offer $1m a year then it’s two firsts. The compo pick itself if he stays another year is a first rounder. Happy to lose a second round pick and having him play an extra year and hope he changes his mind.

No doubt Swans will offer two firsts.

That’s an expensive forward line with a poor mid that they won’t be able to improve that much.

It's nice that you're looking at things from both sides, it's just odd that you were looking at both sides of two different coins to give your take.

It's possible that we may recognize that it is no longer possible for Joe to remain at this club and play, in which case we've already "lost" him and may view #5 and #25 as an acceptable handshake to walk away with.

It's possible that Sydney has done their homework and feel his injury is fixable and that two top ten picks is a fair price to get the deal done.

We don't need to treat winning a trade as being a mutually exclusive outcome for both teams.

Whichever way it ends up going it’s going to be a nightmare for all the neutrals.
:tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

A trade involving a high profile Essendon player wanting out of the club? This is literally the wet dream of neutrals.

Love how Geelong will be labelled good blokes doing the best for their club holding out on Kelly until the last day of trade period but Essendon will be labelled hard to deal with if a contracted Daniher doesn’t have a deal done by the end of day 1.

I could see this one not getting done in 2019. Essendon will likely want more than Sydney are willing to pay, knowing that he's contracted and they would get a first rounder next year as compensation anyway so why not have him play for the year, who knows he might even decide to stay? From Sydney's perspective they can also just sit back and wait a year, see if he recovers and if he does then get him through free agency.

With these factors in play I find it hard to imagine Sydney offering a deal that Essendon would be willing to accept. Another factor is that I'm pretty sure Essendon's internal expectations are a lot higher than what Bigfooty would rate us. Whether that's realistic or not is another story but I don't think they'll be in a hurry to give away our most talented key forward (by a long way) a year earlier than we have to.

The media always play to the lowest common denominator. It’s clickbait. The nuffies lap it up. It’s just the way it is. Check the most hated club poll on the main board. Bombers way out in front.

I’m fairly sure of a few things:

- if a deal doesn’t get done, JD will get on with it in 2020. He’s not a petty type.

- in that eventuality, Essendon will back itself to put their arms around him and change his mind in 12 months. They literally just did the exact same thing with Aaron Francis. He asked to leave to SA 12 months ago. Now he just signed a new contract with Essendon.

- if he does leave next year, Essendon will get a first-round pick as compo. The AFL just fudge that however they want, and they will give one for Daniher. Essendon are a mid-table team, so let’s call it pick 10.

- therefore Essendon know in 12 months they’ll have Daniher or pick 10. There’s no other realistic eventuality

- to get extract him this year, Sydney will have to put overs, all things considered. Will they? Dunno. Depends how committed they are to getting him now I guess.

I just find it hard to believe that successful trading for all of Saad, Shiel, Smith and Stringer over a 2 year period hasn't alleviated the 'hard to deal with' tag. Ultimately it doesn't matter anyway as long as you can get your trades done then that's far and away the most important part.

There is this opinion that seems to be gathering momentum on Bigfooty that even the idea of 'winning a trade' is a toxic thought process. Sounds like a lot of nonsense to me. Trading should be all about getting the best result for your club.

.

No one was really chasing Francis though
