This reads as nothing but one long excuse.

Unrealistic? How many other captains cost their teams a shot at goal - in a final, when momentum was with the team - due to their own stupidity? I'm keen to see the list.

There was no excuse for it. There wasn't then and there still isn't one now.

It might read that way to you but you do tend to look at everything as half empty Partridge.

He's human, and as such is subject to the foibles of emotion, temper, and the occasional lack of judgement. That's not an excuse, just a fact.

He is not a robot. Yep, it was a bad lapse on his part, but not entirely his fault, and to hang him on that single act is a bit of an over reaction imo.

When the team slipped 6 places on the ladder, and got comprehensively beaten by a team playing its first finals series in 12 years, looking at everything from a half full perspective would be kind of stupid. Perhaps a harsher and more sober appraisal mightn't be a bad idea.

And it's just as much an overreaction to completely ignore that single act as well.

Happy to consider all aspects Partridge, and I always look at yours carefully as I respect you as a poster.

I agree he wasn't smart in that particular moment, but he's human, not a cyborg, and I suspect even you and I are guilty of succumbing to emotion in the wrong way, at the wrong time, in an important moment.....

It would've been better if he hadn't , but I think the team has bigger issues than that single moment.

And your opinion does not even warrant a reply, but hey you logged in and all.

Give me a reason why instead of it being idiotic.
Reasoning: Your entire post is based on an opinion (which I’ve already acknowledged is something your entitled to). I simply couldn’t disagree more.

Selwood is the best natural leader at the club by some distance. Removing capacincy doesn’t improve a player. There is no tangible evidence to suggest that Selwood would be a better player without the captaincy. Until you can produce something other than what you “reckon”, I remain unconvinced.

He appeared frustrated this year because we were continually having our game plan dissected and picked apart. Joel wears his heart on his sleeve, and I don’t for a second believe he would be any less frustrated on field when our players are making costly errors at critical stages of games. That’s the ruthless competitor, not the captaincy.

We have a number of obvious on-field deficiencies (forward pressure being the biggest, limited depth outside the 22 being another obvious, and a game plan that gets picked apart in big games).

I think the club can look to correct those issues without having to make wholesale changes to parts of our team that are actually functioning effectively (ie the captain).

I also remain unconvinced that Dangerfield offers any improvement from a leadership perspective. So the whole reason you would do this is IF** Selwood was clearly struggling with the responsibility. Which gets me back to my original point, there is no evidence to suggest that he is, other than a hunch. I respect the club to have a better insight into how he’s coping, over anyone on this site (me included). To say that it’s hindering him in any capacity is speculative at best.

Overall, his on-field influence, and statistical output, both took giant strides from 2017. Aside from the game against Melbourne, I don’t think he did anything to lower his colours this year. Which begs the question, why strip something that he obviously takes a great deal of pride in?

It’s a hard pass for me.
