John Anthony - Do We Sometimes Forget...

All this back and forth is nonsense.

I'll start by looking at this 'if he does this...' 'if he does that...' arguments...

These lines of reasoning people, are hypotheticals. If you base an argument on that, it's just guess work... aaand if you're guess work is really really good I'd suggest getting off BF and becoming a recruitment manager.

Hypothetical's make your arguments specious and are largely baseless. This is not pascals wager, discussing situational contingencies does not give your arguement validity nor does advocating the more negative outcome.

To that end, no one is debating that there are three posibilities for his career direction: 1. He'll get better 2. He'll stay the same 3. He'll get worse. So far as predictions go, gut feel just doesn't cut it.

Based on what be know, the crux of the arguement is:

He's kicked 50 goals this year.

Any team that wouldn't want a 50 goal a year forward... doesn't exist.

As much as you may not like JA he's still kicked 50 goals. Now hunches, and suspicions etc... may proove to be true, he may suck for ever and ever, but for now, he's kicked... just in case you missed it... 50 goals. His current worth in the system, is that of a man who can kick 50 goals.

FWIW, I think he'll get bathed on Saturday, he doesn't seem to have learnt to deal with the really classy defenders and I recon that won't change in one game.

But for now, I'd recommend getting off ones soap boxes, because this year, Jackies kicked... but you know what I'm going to say by now dont you...?

*end rant*

Quality post.
If we all relied on hypotheticals and people's predictions, luke ball would be good

If it wasn't for people making awful predictions, we wouldn't have to listen to all the reporter nuffs saying he should be picked. We would instead be talking about how much of a lesson harry and sack gave porps and burton, how much of a megastar sidebottom is and is going to be and how a defender has kicked 75 goals from 35 career games.

We would also be talking about how pendles is the new terminator for being selected with a broken leg, mooney has kicked only 249 goals from 190 games and how "the saviour" hawkins has kicked only 55 goals in 41 career games.

Lets talk about what has happened and that is that hawkins has played 6 more games for 20 less goals.

This was just FWIW tho as this argument was won pages ago..

Anthony is better at ground level.
Anthony provides better defensive pressure.
Anthony is currently equal to Hawkins in contested marking, which when you consider the size of Hawkins, is very surprising.
Anthony is also a smarter player/

If Hawkins was better than Anthony in all but one area, he'd have had a better season than Anthony in 2009, which he didn't. When you consider the Hawkins was playing in Geelong, it pretty much speaks volumes as to where they are at the moment.

I like Jack but to say that he is better than Hawkins is a bit far. Give them a few years.

I'm happy with Jack's progress however am cautious when labelling young players stars until they have done it for 3 or 4 seasons. I thought Tarrant was going to be gun.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Jack still ended up as a backmen one day.

Having said that, he's had a great year and is still learning the caper, he reminds me of a very young, raw Matty Lloyd at times.

Recently, I think he has been playing a role to suit the game plan and sacrificing his own game a bit, as well as struggling to adapt to the plan.

Basically, he spends a lot of time dragging defenders up the ground to leave a hole behind him -so we can kick it 'over the top' of the zone in the forward fifty and (hopefully) to quick smalls charging toward goal (Dick, Neon, etc.).

Invigoration; said:
3.3 shots on goal is about the same as your AA FF is having, so I don't really understand your point? He probably doesn't do much else, but he doesn't need too, kicking goals is a FF's job. Hawkins on the other hand doesn't do anything at all.

I have know issue with his goal kicking. He has done well with that, 50 goals is a good effort but as i said when he doesnt take his chances or he doesnt get many chances to take he doesnt really do to much else to help the team.
Hawkins only had 8 touches but had a huge impact on the game.
So i disagree with you and maybe im wrong but i think he does need to do more than just kick goals.

Jack's performances in all 3 finals were directly effected by our sub-standard mid-field delivery, or lack there of.

Our mids were dominated barring 2 quarters versus Adelaide.

We are just not there yet.
