Emerging rookie Courtney Johns could find himself playing senior football this time next week if he performs well for the Bendigo Bombers this afternoon. Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said as much following the Bombers' unimpressive 34-point win over Carlton yesterday. "We will have a close look at Courtney Johns this week," Sheedy said when asked about possible changes to the side that will play the Western Bulldogs next week.

"I think too much is being left to James Hird aroud the half forward line area and for that reason I think we need Matthew Lloyd to play centre half forward," Sheedy said. "If that is the case, Courtney Johns might be able to play out of the goalsquare."

Ben Haynes has already been elevated from the rookie list to replace the injured Jordan Bannister. Joel Reynolds - who has had groin surgery - is also on the long-term injury list. Essendon therefore has the option of promoting a second rookie. But if they take up that option, it has to happen before Round 19 under AFL rules.

Should Johns be elevated and play against the Western Bulldogs it will be the completion of a remarkable story. A chronic hip injury in under 18 football had medical specialists telling him he would basically never play football again. But Essendon's fitness staff have worked dilligently with Johns and he has made excellent progress this season. He is a big, strong body and Lloyd has previously commented on how impressed he has been with Johns' leading.

A bag of goals this afternoon would almost certainly assure Johns plays senior football next weekend. If you can't get to this afternoon's VFL match at Kramer Street, Preston (where Bendigo play the Northern Bullants), tune into Bomber Radio from 8pm tonight on Sport 927.

Great to hear,
yet another pair of fresh legs in the side,
but where is Hall? I spose it'll all come down to the game today,
but hopefully with an oppurtunity like this,Johns performs brillantly.Would be great to see...

GO DONS!

bulldogs should be a good game for him to play as well as they dont really have the players to match up on him and lloyd. half forward could be lloyd hird lucas and the dogs would have no answers. Hope he has been doing well today and makes an impression next week if he comes up

I'm yet to even lay eyes on Johns, but I'm definately looking forward to seeing him. (hell, if he gets in the team next week, I might even go the game...!! )

I didn't know much about him until about 3 months ago when a friend of mine (who is good friends with a good friend of Sheedys who most of you would know) was lucky enough one night to have dinner and a few drinks with Sheedy. Sheedy was apparently raving about this young guy called "Courtney" they've got that other clubs don't really seem to rate. (obviously because of the hip)

Sheeds: "Can you imagine me recruiting a 'Courtney!?'"

(He'd had a few apparently.....)

He went on and told them how he thinks he could be the next superstar.....big strong player, strong leads etc.

If he turns out half as good as people are saying he is, he'll be a superstar. Let's just hope he can stay fit.

Was listening to Bomber radio tonight and Peter Banfield was on. Courtney's injury is to the knee, but is not too severe, may miss only one week.

Which is one week too many if we want him promoted this year, correct?

Nah...no problem, have heard from a very close source he is all ok, and wanted to go back on aginst the bullants...The club doctor has cleared him, and he is fine and wants to train today, and will play this week...dunno which grade though!!!
