Traded Jordan Lewis [traded to Melbourne with picks 57 and 68 for picks 48 and 66]

So you pull the trigger on one of the youngest of the group? :drunk:

Age is not everything. Lewis has shown the signs of age as much as anyone on that list with he and Hodge experiencing the biggest form downturn in 2016.

Mitchell is the oldest on that list and was pretty much as good as ever in 2016 (we got rid of him too :drunk:).

Congratulations to Jordan for getting a 3 year contract (was never going to get that at Hawthorn).

Congrats to Melbourne for getting a classy player - he will compliment your midfield nicely over the next couple of years and play the odd blinder.

Shame we got so little for him - losing your best two mids for nothing is disappointing regardless of the other factors at play.

err, then what does that say about the rest of your list with Lewis finishing 2nd in the b&f:huh:

Yes but we are replacing a 34yo and a 30yo with a 22yo and 23yo, when Hodge,Gibson and Burgoyne retire next year then the Hawk will have money to lure a big name FA.

If you lose 3 players you need to replace them, the 3 you named have supposedly taken substantial pay cuts to keep the list together.

Can't see how you will suddenly amass this warchest because those 3 get shoved out.

Doesn't say anything about our list - read it again. Of the players aged over 30, Lewis showed the signs of form downturn as much as any in 2016 (bar Hodge). Those players are Mitchell, Gibson, Burgoyne (and Roughead whom I excluded for obvious reasons). So, out of 5 absolute champions of the game, he is top 2 for starting to slow down. That's not to say he is not a good player. I went on to describe him as the 2nd best mid at Hawthorn in 2016 - which is true. The only point I was trying to make is that when you are over 30, it doesn't matter if you are 31 or 34, as that age depends completely on what role you are given, how you are playing, if you are slowing, etc (e.g. Mitchell is the oldest of the group and is still playing the best footy of the 5 - compare to his draft class - Ball, Judd, etc. who are long finished.)

2nd in the B&F was a surprise to many but he still had a good season (and deserved to be top 5-6). Again, he was a top 2 mid at Hawthorn which perhaps does say something about our list (or at least the midfield). No surprise we have gone very hard for mids in the trade period.

Whilst you are obviously just poking fun (and may not get where I am coming from), do you disagree??

Do you think Lewis (the youngest over 30) is playing better footy than S.Mitchell (the oldest over 30)?

Do you think that if you are over 30 it matters whether you are 31 or 34 or is the form you display more important.

Compare Dustin Fletcher at 34 to Adam Cooney at 30 for example.

FWIW, I'm not trying to defend Hawthorn or bag Lewis (which are very different points). I have stated it is a bad trade for Hawthorn and that Lewis is still playing good footy. Just that him being the youngest over 30 doesn't mean much when Mitchell is the oldest over 30 and is still maintaining form better than any of the others.

I get where you are coming from but cannot agree that any of what has happened had anything to do with the form of Lewis or Mitchell or anyone else on the list. It's simply been about squeezing out club champs to make room for the new breed &, other than Hodge, I doubt the names really mattered.

It's been brutal & frankly, disrespectful.

Just saw the trade details. Wow.
Showed signs of slowing up, i guess the third year might have triggers attached to it, but otherwise hopefully a good get for the Dees.
Hawthorn's trading period is bloody fascinating, will be interesting to see the final balance.

Assuming Lewis and Mitchell were not going to be offered another contract at the end of 2017, I think we're better off offloading them now and getting games into younger players. That's under that strict assumption, though.

Lewis will be good for the Dees, smart pick up but I wonder whether they'll rue that 3rd year.

Well worth the risk, even if we only get a few seasons out of him.

One thing we are desperately missing is experienced leadership and he has that in droves.

Honestly we might not see the final balance of it for another 12-24 months. Appears that the club is trying to rejuvenate on the fly rather than bottom out

Actually the 3rd year has a trigger clause for a 4th.

2017 mid season
Mitchell 34
Burgoyne 34
Gibson 33
Hodge 33
Lewis 31
Roughead 30

Doubt that we were getting two more seasons out of any of that group
Somebody had to take the bullet this year
Strange that the Hawks chose the two best performed from that group to move on this year and not the two in Gibson and Hodge who performed the worst

Honestly, Burgoyne was better than Lewis this year. Most Hawks fans still unsure how Lewis ended up 2nd in our B+F

Hodge obviously had an interupted year with a pair of injuries. Gibson's output certainly decreased somewhat, though that may have been a function of no Lake in the backline as much as anything

But then I put my mind back together and remembered that he's 34, Lewis is 30 and has been declining for a couple of seasons now (don't let the B&F 2nd spot fool you, we were mostly shocked that he finished so high in that award), and that we also have Gibson, Burgoyne, Hodge, rumours about McEvoy wanting to hang them up due to degenerative injuries, and the possibility of Roughy never coming back.

I've heard/read a few people suggesting he's past it, and stating that they were shocked that he finished 2nd in the BnF and it's not a true reflection etc etc.

Surely the BnF is the best guide of how well he played over the course of the season?!

Given the comments around 'Clarkson and the Hawks knows what they're doing, he's coached 4 flags' etc, I'm happy to go with the coaching panel and suggest he had a reasonable year.

From the Hawks website:
"Votes for the 2016 Peter Crimmins Medal were awarded after each home-and-away and finals game by the Hawthorn Football Club Match Committee, consisting of Senior Coach Alastair Clarkson and Assistant Coaches Brett Ratten, Adem Yze and Damian Carroll. A maximum of 16 votes can be accumulated by a player each game"

Completely agree with you and never said otherwise.

Obviously happy to defer to Clarkson and the match committee.

Doesn't stop us being surprised though. That said, Hawks B+F often hard to guage. Consensus pick was Rioli this year, and Mitch to win it last year. Wrong both times

Chicken Nixon and Robbo confirmed it after David King gave it the once over and Gerald Healy chipped in just to say how much he hates the Hawks (actually it's Hawk envy)

Actually it was in the paper the other day can't remember if it was the Age or the Hun
that the Dees offered him 3 years with a trigger for a 4th.

Exactly Jordan had a good year but Rioli,Gunston,Burgoyne were clearly better but as you say the Hawks B&F throws up the odd surprise.

Well it's obvious now that we've traded for cap space and are building a war chest to have big crack at the 2017 free agency period. Here's hoping the JOM deal can get wrapped up soon so we can start the Fyfe/Martin to Hawthorn rumours.....

But both Mitchell and Lewis contract expired after next season, how is this building a warchest ? You could have got rid of both at the end of next season and been in the same position
