When Richmond failed in 2016 they initiated a full review of the footy department and sweeping changes were made to assistant coaches, while Hardwick was retained. Geelong did a similar thing in 2006. I'd be surprised if we do anything close to that at all

In the past I was quick to point the finger at our assistant coaches (might have been under Lyon) as I thought they were a big reason for our nonsense. Hale for example as a forward coach use to piss me off. But I honestly don't believe our assistants are the problem this time round and I think we honestly have a strong coaching department. Graham has done wonders for our forwards for example.

It's our game day coach who struggles.

Yeah like how Mark Harvey's deficiencies were papered over by having Chris Scott as assistant, and as soon as Geelong poached him we fell in a heap.

Exactly true! Fairly certain Dean Solomon was an assistant coach as well during 2010 and left end of year. He went on to be a fairly decent assistant elsewhere.

Another year extension in March would be unbelievable. I couldn’t believe it this year.
Yeah whatever happens that is completely untenable. I was fully supportive of the one year extension this year, to give him completely clean air to make finals which is the bare minimum that should have been expected. But you can only pull that stunt once or you're a laughing stock.
Look in all honesty we know which way this is most likely going. Either we do make finals next week in which case they will give him two more years, or we miss out in which case they'll fold like the weak campaigners they are, make soothing noises about our growth as a team and our culture of supporting one another, ignore their own sane rationale behind the extension and give him two more years anyway.
I've said it over and over. The board is the problem. I'd love to be proven wrong and find out they are, as we speak, scouring the country to replace the bloke that isn't terrible but isn't going to win us a flag either, in expectation that they will bone him once they find someone suitable. But I don't think I will be proven wrong.

Call it what you like, I'm just saying it won't happen because it doesn't follow the pattern of behavior the club has been rolling out for years.

If we miss finals next year, then I think he's in all sorts.
So the “safe” approach?

The only time in our existence we got anywhere is when the club went balls and all to get Lyon to the club. We need that again

Like I said, call it what you like.
Without a doubt. The smart money should be on a two year extension. Then we can all be sitting here in 2026 debating about how we are so close to contending, if only Cooper Simpson didn't get injured at an inopportune moment in the season.
Contract or not, I think he gets sacked without finals next year.

He should be sacked if he doesn't make finals this year, since that is the only reason to have given him one year. But he won't be.
Anyway, ffs let's hope he does make finals this year. It's still possible

I don't agree and haven't since last year.

The pressure everyone thought he was under going into this year is where I think he is going into 2025.

So this year was a free hit, irrespective of any result. Do you really believe that with the Garlick 5 year vision?

They would of expected top 4 minimum this year. The season is a fail, the coach has to go

I don't care about the plan.

My opinion was he could survive as season no worse than 2023. It is clearly better.

I think it is irrational to expect a team with our demographics to be top 4 and the data backs it up.

Is it much better than 2023, considering the availability of players and the extra year of young players to learn the “game plan”:if that what it is.

Plus Hawks are younger and have gone straight past us

The board doesn't get held accountable, it's as simple as that. IMO you could see this coming early in the season. I get the desire for optimism but at some point there must be some accountability. Placing it all on the coach seems neither fair nor reasonable.
I guess we got to accept mediocrity again. It's gonna be a long time before Freo makes finals for 2 years in a row just like 2012-3
