Coach Justin Longmuir Pt 2

I love that whenever I read interviews with players like Voss & Sturt they talk about how clear they are on their role & what they need to work on and feel part of the team.

I think JL is just getting started.
They also praise each other and work together to achieve success.

Even players like Fyfe have dropped their ego for the common good of the team.

We have a team that plays for each other now which is a powerful force.

A lot of that is the environment the coaching group provides including JL.

In the summer of 2006 I witnessed Dean Cox try to steal a blokes missus at the Floreat, piss in a pot plant at the Saint, and finally snort something unusual at Metro City.

Can people really change that much?
To be fair…

Let who hasn’t had nights out in Perth like that cast the first stone.

Reckon Joel Corey deserves some praise for how he has the midfield humming, dominanting stoppages and dare I say it, moving the ball like the dominant Geelong of last decade. Hope he doesn't get poached. Saw some buzz that he would be welcomed back at the Dogs should Luke Beveridge's days end.

Hopefully he stays.

I just saw that Mitch Duncan has put off contract talks until the end of the year.

He could be a good assistant should we lose one?

He has always struck me as an on field general so could have coaching aspirations and he is from Perth and good mates with Joel Corey.

We added a specialist stoppage coach over the off season. Can’t remember his name - isn’t a guy that played AFL footy.

Might just be having two good coaches doing the midfield tbh. 2022 went alright with Carr and Corey, 2023 not so much.

I believe Bob Murphy has become a little bit more involved too.

Who's a better coach, Longmuir or Mitchell?
Don’t know either of them personally obviously but my 2 bits for what they are worth

Mitchell is a crafty little bugger with a winning smile and rats gold tooth and surely had a lot to do with WC getting the chocolates in 2018, lots of little 1% cheat tactics though .

JL seems more like that army captain in the trenches who you’d go over the top for because he’d go over first leading the charge

You need s little of both in modern footy.
All the dynasty clubs have had the brains and brawn to build that aura of
dominance.
I’d certainly be happier if we had someone like Mitchell as an assistant coach.
But it is not just one person or way, a team effort that propels a team to be
admired.
The really good coaches can turn games around, move the pieces and turn defeat
into victory. They can lean on their assistants and it’s where Ross Lyon was always
the smartest guy in the room😜

Harry Garland I believe

How many finals has Mitchell won.

If they finish 9th this year while it will be a success it doesn't guarantee they just walk into finals next year.

Look at Adelaide from last year.

But i will say i am little worried about the Hawks building back up so quickly i was hoping to see them suffer for another 4 or 5 years.

Totally.

But there may be one or two, but I would like to know if there is any metric that could support the notion that Mitchell is a better coach than Longmuir. I'd imagine stats like win/loss ratio, finals appearances, head-to-head etc would all be in Longmuir's favour. All with playing squads of a similar age demographic.

It might be bias on all kinds of levels but for mine, Mitchell is getting more out of less (currently). Like Macrae and Scott, he seems to be able to get a lot out of role players and elevate them. It's also probably bias on how they appear in media but on nothing but feels, Mitchell feels like the better coach.

No one can definitively say who is better though and really, never will be able to, just like you can't really say whether Matthews or Clarkson was a better coach. Just too many other factor that lead to coach success.

All you really want to be able to say is you have a really good one, I'm pretty positive at this stage we can say we have a really good one.
