Geez Louise, if that abysmally insipid no effort trash that we dished up in the 4th quarter is what happens when we "play to win" then it is going to be a loooooong season (and I don't mean games in late September either). Fair dinkum, they were witches hats in the 4th quarter, no sustained effort from 80% of them, and really poor predictable errors.

Geelong just controlled the ball and spread the ground.

How does a team that refuses to tackle get the ball back when they do that? Once they kicked a couple of goals and took the steam out of the game they put the foot down because we folded like a deck of cards

What if we beat Sydney next week, are we allowed to be happy with JL then?

You can be happy about it, doesn’t mean the rest of us will be.

At this stage one win is not going to be enough to sway my opinion of JL, an opinion that has been formed over the past 5 years. I need to see a full season of consistent performances and improvement. This team should be making a prelim this year but I very much doubt if he’s the guy to take us there. This is his 6th season in charge so it’s not a premature call.

We should be expected to beat Sydney, in fact, I’d say even after Saturday’s embarrassment that we will beat Sydney. It would certainly track with how inconsistent we’ve been under JL. His W/L is 53 wins and 53 losses. Win a game, lose a game for his entire tenure. If a time traveller told me we’ll beat Sydney this week and then lose to West Coast next week I’d believe it. I never know which version of Freo is going to show up.

And as others have said, Sydney clearly aren’t as good as they were last year. They look to be a very middle of the road team. Winning this week should be the bare minimum for a contending team.

No caretaker has ever won a flag in the caretaker season. Not even sure any of them have ever made a prelim or semi. So there is no real cost to finding out for sure if he can turn it around.
2015.... Crows.

Phil Walsh passed away. Scott Camporeale took over the 2nd half of the season. Made finals, won an away Elim final then lost to hawks next week

How has Brodie failed us time and time again? He played all 24 games in 2022 and was good, has played 5 games since then. Not saying he’s the answer but he certainly hasn’t been given a decent go at it given his 2022 form.
Will Brodie? Good point . I had to edit your post. It was his 2022 season that was good.

Crazy he averaged 27.4 disposals in 2022 then basically played a handful of games after that

Good spot. 2022 he plays all 24 games and is an important part of our finals push. Has played 5 games in the two years since, but apparently he’s let us down time and time again…

To be more precise he played 5 games early in 2023 and hasn’t played since, even though we struggled for a big bodied mid for most of that season until we moved Young to the midfield late in the year. One of those 5 games he was sub, against Gold Coast in Gather Round. He was influential in getting us back into that game imho.

He is not perfect. I was at Geelong on Saturday and did not see any perfect footballers wearing purple. I did see a purple midfield lacking a big body, indeed lacking numbers.

Do you remember our start to 2023? We got beaten by Saints & North. We looked horrible & Brodie was a big part of that. Not saying he shouldn’t have had another chance but let’s not get carried away that he didn’t deserve to get dropped at the time.

I didn’t say he didn’t deserve to get dropped. I did say we have lacked a big bodied mid on a number of occasions, including on Saturday, where we went in undersized and with insufficient numbers in the midfield imho. I have seen him on tv in wafl, and agree at this stage he looks lazy. That is both on him and on the club.

Youngest team of the round this week.

Are we getting (miles) ahead of ourselves?
On averages yes.

Murphy Reid is first year. Draper is the second youngest player in his third season.

We're young on average due to no old players except JOM. There's enough experience there for the majority of the team. How many players that aren't at least okay by their 4th or 5th season end up being good? I'd say not many. Reidy who's 25 was the only other player not into at least his fourth season at AFL level. Lack of experience isn't an excuse.

Yes , no one really even acknowledges it when commenting on the clubs performance. i.e. how many commentators even consider one of the youngest and least experienced teams coming up against one of the oldest and most experienced away is always going to be a tough day in the office?

How many even acknowledge that that they did exactly what the commentators are always crying out for when a team is behind, throwing caution to the wind and trying to win not lose by less, yet when they do it and it goes wrong.... crickets....

I think we were up against it with the team we put out there in terms of winning, but there is no excuse for the terrible effort we rolled out.
Our last quarter was horrific. Young teams fade away as we all know.

But, we kicked 6 gpals to 1 in the 3rd. I actually thought there was a lot to like up until we were blown away in the last given our 'outs'. Hung in there as long as we could.

It will be interesting to see if Geelong take the long handle to other teams up there this year, or if it really was just as simple as a very young team playing a Premiership fancy on their home deck.

We are clutching at straws if we think Will Brodie is the answer to our problems.
We have the players , it's all about attitude and commitment and that's down to the coach

That last quarter effort reminded me of the dark days of yester year. I thought we were way past that. Top sides don't let that happen.

Way too generous on Q1 and Q2. We were pitiful for 75% of the day. The intent simply wasn't there. No excuse for that.

Miles ahead only if you think we are serious premiership contenders in 2025.
In terms of where the club is at with JLo then we are spot on, age is no excuse after a rebuild this long and his 6th year at the helm. Any issues with age/inexperience keeping us from Top 6 is on JLo and the off-field team he has had the dominant hand in assembling. He knows this - that is why he didn't roll out the inexperience excuse in his presser last week.

I don't agree that JL is the dominant hand driving the list demographics, it's very obviously a whole club thing.

I do agree he's the one that will pay the price if we don't perform though.

I find it funny how we were 3rd with a few rounds to go last year and people say that we only fell out of the top 4/8 because of injuries to key players.

Don’t necessarily agree that it was only injuries, but okay, I’ll take your word for it.

In the off-season we lost no best 22 players and added Bolton who was a big need. So naturally, we are an older and more experienced team than we were last season, and almost definitely a better team. Right?

So why are these same people now pulling out the age/inexperience excuse? If we were a top 4 team last year and only bad luck kept us from being that, why are you not expecting us to actually be a top 4 team this year? If we were capable last year then we are more then qualified to achieve it this year.

Last year it was the injuries, this year it’s the age/inexperience. At what point during this 10 year rebuild do the excuses end and at what point do you raise your standards for this club as a supporter?
