How similar are these 2 players?

On paper they appear very similar.

Only a month apart in age,
Koby Stevens, 23 May 1991
Kane Lucas, 26 June 1991

Both picked early in the 2009 draft
Koby Stevens 22nd pick
Kane Lucas 12th pick

Similar in height and weight
Koby Stevens 187 and 82 (according to wce website)
Kane Lucas 188 and 82 (according to carlton website

Both midfielders who have the ability to play on a half forward flank. Both rated highly within their respective clubs but pretty unknown outside of their own clubs.

Who is actually a better player? Are they as similar as the above stats suggest? Is one more "outside" (Lucas) and one more "inside" (Stevens)?

Stevens is a victorian playing in wa and Lucas is a west australian playing in victoria.

If these 2 wanted to go back to their home states (hypothetically) would a straight swap be adequate? Or would the fact that Lucas was picked earlier in the draft mean we would have to throw in a draft pick as well?

Also both have had plenty of injuries early in their careers.

Stevens is the better player currently.

Who knows, Lucas could break out this year, judged a touch harshly on BF in general due to his injuries. Would take Stevens though as Lucas is a similar player to Rosa.

Unfortunately injuries and both teams have depth in midfield have prevented either from having any impact at AFL level.

I'd be happy with either at West Coast though.

Stevens > Lucas > Sheppard. But I'd back Sheppard to develop into a better player at the moment.

We have a better player in Gaff already who plays a similar role through the middle, Lucas can't kick under pressure at the moment. Similar to some of our other mids.

Sheppard is basically just a bit more defensive version of lucas anyway with a better kick. Lucas is a bit further along the development path as well.

Stevens is a completely different sort of player and was the second best pure inside mid of the 09 draft. Op in his draft year has probably thrown his development back by about a year, has a good long kick but lost a fair amount of penetration with it with the op but that should return. Needs to sort out his ball drop a little bit and work on his outside skills coupled with realising that while he was a big rough and tumble kid if he plays that way against hardened men he's going to get badly hurt.

Will be a good player but not sure where he fits for us. Ideally i would have him replace priddis in the future as i see masten as kerr's replacement and masten is better at spreading from the contest, has better hands in close and is a better kick to a leading target.

Why the comparison, Stevens is taller, faster and Stronger overhead?
Dosn't quite have the same ball winning ability yet and needs to continue to build his fitness.

If he can solidly improve those two (though likely one is a by product of the other) he will be a massive upgrade on Priddis.

Always hoped he would be Brad Sewell-ish with a better mark and kick.

No way in hell is Stevens only 82 kilos. WE got destroyed by a physically strong midfield on the weekend. We are a long way of matching Geelong. Really need Stevens in the centre to match it with the Geelong, Collingwood and Hawthorn's and also to provide some protection for Kerr as Stenglein used to. Masten, Gaff, Sheppard, Shuey still on the weedy end of the scale. Without some bigger bodies, I can't see our midfield being able to compete

How many centre clearances did he have on the weekend, how many of his tackles in a clearance stuck, how many times was he tackled? Saturday was against the benchmark, and outside of Kerr our midfield was physically bulldozed.

Do we have a place for both Priddis and Stevens in the same team?

No we don't.
Stevens will be an important player in our midfield next year, he is IMHO a Voss type player. Hard bodied, aggressive, with good awareness. He will provide the blocks for Shuey and gaff in the midfield and stop scooter getting cutout of contests.
Our midfield will be similar to the Brisbane midfield during the early 2000s. Ironically they were the last team to go from spoon to prelim as well.
My comparisons:
Gaff >> Power
Shuey >> Black
Stevens >> Voss
Rosa >> Lappin
S.Selwood >> Hart
Darling >> J.Brown

See it as well....:thumbsu:

They matched up fine against them in the H&A season.

It is not all about how big physically our midfielders are, more how tired they were and a lack of experience.

Sure players like Gaff and Masten need to add some muscle but at the right rate.

Shuey and Darling (up forward) are fine size wise, their pace and agility being important attributes.

Masten is not the replacement for Kerr. can't believe people think that.
different completely. kerr is like shorter version of THE ROCK

Nice thought. Hope we come even close to that. One question though.

Who is the Akermanis in our future? Yes he was/is a knob but a very important x factor player in that golden era.

Kerr is not the rock. He is just as injury prone as Masten if not more so. Unfortunately neither player is built for the role they play best at.
