Hinkley took over a club that had done very little since the 07 grand final and he’s turned them into a consistent side who has been around the top four for a while and just made a preliminary final. If he does it again good luck to him, I’d say it adds more weight to the idea that he’s a good coach.

Simple question - is it more important to win finals, including grand finals... or having a better minor round record?

Don Pyke had a far better winning record than Malcolm Blight... but will take Blight & his 2 flags any day over Pyke.

Winning flags obviously comes first, but you need to be able to put yourself in a position to win flags and to do that, you need to win a good percentage of your home and away games.

Ken Hinkley has been successful multiple times at putting is in a position to win flags, we just haven't been able to capitalise and with a little more luck, Ken may well have won a premiership or two.

We've been a better club than the Crows by every metric over the past 20 years despite the Crows being 'the pride of South Australia' and 'the team for all South Australians' while we're a relatively mid sized club from Alberton.

because he hasn’t done nothing. He’s improved the side. Just because he hasn’t improved them to the level YOU want him to, doesn’t mean he hasn’t made them better. Fagan hasn’t won anything either. No one is going to suggest he hasnt done a good job. If brisbane are in the same spot in 2-3 years it doesn’t mean he hasn’t made Brisbane a better side than they were before he arrived

Helps when you’re carried by AA Boak, Wingard, impressive 1st year wines, prime Schulz and Gray in your 1st year.

Doing some research, I hadn't realized Brad Scott also coached for 10 seasons without a Grand Final appearance. I don't know how they ruse their way into these tenures without success.

We've made seven preliminary finals in the past 20 seasons yet only have one flag to show for it.

It's hard to argue we haven't underachieved over that time given how talented a lot of our sides have been.

Wasn't aware of that stat. Interesting.
We made 7 prelims between 94-00 for just 2 flags so we didn't do much better.
And if I use the 20 year window as you did, we also made the PF in 2007, 2014, 2015. So 2 flags from 10 prelims in 20 years. Not great.

FWIW, I reckon Ken is a very good coach, and their list would be top 4 in the comp. They are solid on every line, no obvious holes. I reckon they will contend again this year.

Actually it is the norm to not progress for quite a while. Since the league went national the only teams to not have an extended run of failure - 5+ seasons in the mire - are west coast, adelaide (if they miss finals again this season it will be five years) and geelong and possibly Sydney depending on your starting point, I suppose you could put GWS in there.

I dont know what the exact number is but I would imagine that in a century of football, the volume of clubs who saw a prelim final defeat as some sort of proof that someone can’t coach and should be moved on, would be in single digits. Why? Because being that close to the grand final means something is working. Not everything, but something

Neither of our clubs have won anything since the competition became 18 teams, but my point is the Power have been more successful than the Crows aka 'the pride of South Australia' in the 18 team national competition.
