I am an effeminate practicing homosexual and applaud Sheedy's comments. It only makes people uncomfortable because they deep down don't want to think about it.

Some people don't have to think about it. Enlightened people accepted homosexuality many years ago, so it really only serves to show how Neanderthal in thinking Sheedy (and for that matter, the AFL community) really is.

Incestual relationships and marriage will probably be next on the agenda of sexual equality and people opposing that will be labelled ignorant, incestphobes, cavemen etc the same way people are now when they oppose same sex relationships and marriage, it might take a while but will slowly be normalised. Interesting times ahead

Just wow.

Perhaps they mean being able to hold your boyfriend's hand, or give him a kiss in public without getting stared at.

I take your point. But not being able to publicly hold your boyfriend's hand or kiss him is not a football issue. You are going to get stared at if you do that at a restaurant or in the park - because people are not familiar with it and many not comfortable with it.

Then it becomes your choice - to go to the footy, enjoy the game and not draw attention to yourselves. Just like hundreds of thousands of people who go along to watch a game of footy at the weekend to have a couple of hours of enjoyment outside the bullshit of everyday life.

Just wow.

Never really get that argument. Are they saying that they WANT incest/bestiality?
Or are they saying the people who support marriage equality will soon find themselves as "outsiders" and they want to prevent them from suffering that fate?
Very confusing logic!

Footy is not the most un-enlightened place on Earth I agree, but the fact is that the AFL is a MAJOR industry, and yet to my knowledge no (AFL men's) employee or board member has identified as gay. This is an important and not insignificant point.

In the same way that AFL actively supporting Indigenous players >20 years ago has made a difference, at a micro level amongst its employees, and at a macro level within Australian society.

Just because people are not comfortable/familiar does not excuse poor behaviour.

Is that old tool still building monuments to himself?

I wish he would just dry up and blow away.

Ice is more your thing, no?
Of course gay or bi people can go and watch the footy. How can anyone tell what sexuality people are at a game? And who gives a **** anyway?

But I guess it depends what you mean by 'be themselves'. If they are going to wear leather chaps with the arse missing or do a rendition of YMCA after every goal they would probably get a few looks.
I believe the term you're looking for is arseless chaps.

If accepting people that aren't heterosexual is political then one side of politics better get its act together.

It's acceptance, love and inclusion. When I see that, I don't see politics.
It has nothing to do with the game of Australian rules football, this a society issue that should stay in society and not use footballs audience to get its message out. What makes them so special?, their human beings not bigger nor lesser than anyone else.

Do we leave blind people out of the game by not having a round for them, maybe we should play with guide dogs to show we acknowledge them.
Do blind people face abuse for being blind? Do they have less legal rights? Do people judge a blind person for being out with their partner?

I never get people who oppose footy players saying they support homosexuality. If you don't think there's an issue with homosexuality, why would you care if the footy supports them? I don't care about iselect, but I don't go around whinging that Melbourne is shoving iselect in my face.

I'd doubt they'd identify as homosexual.

Its not about identity. Its about who you really are.

No wait, its about identity. If you dont admit you are gay you are not gay.

I did a work survey recently which asked for sexual orientation. "Non-binary" was on the list.

Had to look that up.

Was upset because "none of your f#@ken business" was not on the list.

Sheedy had a thought bubble. Again. Im not sure why people listen to him. He hasnt been relevant for over a decade.

Think you may be bullshitting here

As far as I know it's illegal for employers to ask their employees sexuality

Non binary doesn't refer to sexual orientation. It's a gender term.

Nope not joking.

It was a survey about diversity and inclusion.

I think they were trying to do the right thing while actually being incredibly invasive. It was an international survey and we have offices in countries where people can be killed for admitting they are gay.

Shocked the hell out of me. And Im pretty sure the numbers will be meaningless because they can claim the surveys are anonymous but a lot of people are not going to tell the truth out of fear.

But that is not really the point of this thread. The point is a dinosaur is trying to sound understanding while managing to just be offensive and grandstanding.

If you took offense to what he said you should understand exactly why homosexuals need this support.

It wouldn't be surprising if there are current players that are gay. It's their choice if they decide to declare that or not, as it's a personal choice. What shouldn't happen is players being forced into admission by the AFL for a PR stunt as a feel good story to highlight the games stance on sexual equalisation.

Is the football community not part of our society?
And you're correct that 'they' are merely human beings; the difference is that by some people they still aren't regarded as human beings, hence they get the support they do.
If racism or homophobia didn't exist then we wouldn't have need for a cultural or pride round in the AFL. So if you don't like either of those rounds start calling out racists and homophobes

Wow, I can't wait for the AFL to have "world peace" and "stop world hunger" round. Then we could all join hands and sing kumbaya, as these issues slowly dissolve away.

How about "stop charging the working class $7 for a ****ing beer" round?!

Don't you just love work surveys? They go through great pains to tell you that your identity will remain anonymous, but with the type of questions they ask it's obvious who you are. Then they ask you to email the completed survey to them, so they also have your email address. Great privacy :)

Do you disagree with the notion that cultural/heritage and pride rounds exist largely because those sectors of the community have (and in some cases still are) been dealt a rough hand in the past?

Why do them? Only stupid people partake in such drivel.

These were online but I build surveys using this software and I reckon I could find people if I really wanted.

The big picture though is it is simply none of their business even if they think they are doing the right thing.

A lot of people in Australia found it offensive. I wonder what staff in Muslim countries thought about it.

They primarily exist in the AFL as a marketing tool. Do you honestly believe that Ghandi has been reincarnated and is working at AFL headquarters?

I go to the football to get away and escape from this kind of bullshit, not to have it rammed down my throat.
