As was widely talked about last year, Kevin Sheedy's last years as coach of Essendon, and particularly his last year of 2007, exposed the selfishness of former coach Kevin Sheedy.

Looking for short-term fixes to save his job, Sheedy decimated Essendon's list, and its future prospects through poor recruiting and short-term solutions to fill holes.

The mess Kevin Sheedy has left in his wake will be apparent for all to see this year as new coach Matthew Knights picks through the wreckage of a team completely reliant on a couple of few ageing stars in Captain Matthew Lloyd, inconsistent forward Scott Lucas and lanky defender Dustin Fletcher and struggles to make his team competitive.

The rebuilding done at other clubs over this time, Western Bulldogs, Richmond and Carlton foremost among them, will contrast sharply this year with Essendon as Knights struggles to avoid the Wooden Spoon. Becoming the coach of Essendon at such a period will indeed turn out to be something of a poisoned chalice for the young Knights as the full horrors of Sheedy's last few years at Essendon are exposed.

What do you guys think? Can anyone work out which journalist penned this a few months back?

We all know sheeds loved to give recycled players a second chance, some of them turned out to be gold (ie: Paul Barnard, Sean Wellman and Michael Long)
but some of them on the other hand were disasters and deprived the younger fellas of getting more experience, hence slowing their development. Why on earth he recruited Scott Camporeale, Illija Grigic, Darren Wheildon, Ty Zantuck and Jonathan Robram is beyond me, I guess he saw talent in them that could never produce on the big stage. But Sheeds was always big on putting the best team on the park, and lets face it we all have different perceptions of the best team, so don't be too harsh on Sheeds, he did have a lot of success also.

I stopped reading after that statement:thumbsdown::eek:

After reading the post right through to it's end, I think the answer to your question is probably that tool, Robert Walls.

Are you going to tell us?

I would not be too stressed at all if I were a dons fan, not one iota.

More an amalgam of arguments from various journalists. I heard similar sentiments quite a bit last year - and I also heard Sheedy say that if he got 1 more year he could prove he'd been working to a longer-term plan that would pay off in 2008.

I think the pressure heaped on him last year really forced him to ****** the development of some of the kids in the hope he could win a new contract.

I always thought it was a rush to a premature judgment on Sheedy - as a Saints supporter, I can accept it takes a while to build/rebuild a list.

It wouldn't surprise me if Wallsy wrote it, he has made no hiding of the hatred between him and Sheeds going back to the days when they played in grand finals opposite each other. It is clear that it was a personal attack, and I'm sure Sheeds will write a similar thing about Wallsy's commentary, but lets be honest, there has been an ongoing fight here so I wouldn't look too far into the article.

I doubt Campo was a good idea, but the Michael was a no-brainer if you could get him.

It's true he didn't give us much on the field as a player, but he gava a tonne of his knowledge (positioning, stoppages ect) to Stanton, Watson, Winderlich ect when we had few veteran midfielders, plus, we still drafters a lot of young players in that time so it wasn't a total waste.

Obviously Zantuck was.

I agree with all of this.

Didn't they have about 8 high picks in 2006? He/Dodoro selected kids.

I doubt Campo was a good idea, but the Michael was a no-brainer if you could get him.

As much as I hate em, the Bummers have their list on track.
agree totally never thought there list was as bad as people make out, they might struggle for a couple years but i think they have some fantastic kids that sheedy bought in.

I also agree with most of it.

Since when did this train of thought get disproved by a couple of NAB cup wins?

I still think they will be rubbish. Not so much this year, moreso next year. I still think Lloyd, Lucas and Fletcher this year will fetch them 7-11 wins.

All will be revealed in a month or so.....
