King/Gardiner Traded to the Saints

Re: Oh Charlie & King...

hopefully geelong fans can be as vocally disappointed with losing Kingy for nothing as Melb fans were when there club lost Johnstone for something decent.

God I hope Kingy dominates Blake next yr and is the single reason why we lose, idiotic getting rid of him after we stuck by him from 03-06 when he rarely played, yet he managed to string 3 months of football together and play well at the end of this season... hey its logical to get rid of him now!

Remember it was he who turned down the Cats offer. So he can only look at himself to blame someone.

He had to be realistic, he hasn't played good footy for nearly 3 years, to then have one quality game and want the world. He has to remember that his body let him down so many times, what would make the difference, more cash??

I think it was a great decision to make room, if he didn't accept a lower contract, then sionara. Shame he couldn't put his playing days into prospective and see that his best is a long time ago.

If he had that much heartfelt angst, why didn't he sign a lower contract to take pressure off the cap?? I think because he had no leadership when he was captain, he has none now.

The first words out of Harley's mouth when re-signing came up, he said, 'I'll drop in pay to keep this side together'. That is leadership.

Re: King and Gardiner gone

Well going back a couple of years (before Ottens), King was the highest paid player on the list. So I'd suggest even though he may have gone down a bit in his last contract, he would've been on a tidy sum.

Gardiner and Hank would free up at least 100k each, Callan maybe a bit lower.

You'd have to suggest that with all those four gone, would free up at least 350-400k. Probably more if King was on 200k, which wouldn't surprise me at all.

Yeah that had slipped my mind thanks mate!
when did King last renew his contract with the cats? Because for 3-4 years now he has been underperforming, and would have had a pay cut if his contract had been renewed?

Re: Oh Charlie & King...

I listened to Kingy in his media wrap. He actually mentioned in the conversation that the club sorting things out was the least they could do after 13years. Come on Kingy you played in two Grand finals and got a premiership medallion that could have gone to Blakey. The club could not match the money King wanted so they have done the second best thing and given him a chance elsewhere. I think he should be grateful for what the club has given him of 13 years and it was his decision not to retire not the clubs.
Gardiner will welcome the new challenge and seeing they both live in Melbourne now that should suit too.
Pretty arogant stuff.

Re: I know how we ended up with Pick 90

Nah, King is worth that no matter which players he's bundled with.
If you're right and we took a lower pick just so we could offload Charlie we would have been better delisting him.

Edit: Just read it again, right, silly joke... Charlie isn't that bad, but it will be funny to watch Sydney try and rely on him.

Sydney rely on Charlie ??? You mean St Kilda.

Look, we did alright, clear some space and now can take on some young players. Guys like Selwood, Hawkins and a few others will need pay rises when off rookie contracts, so we need to make the room.

Very happy after today. Some of our players who couldn't get a run get a second chance, awesome. Hope they do well, just not against us.

Re: shit trade

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I understand why we let them go. But Pick 90? Maybe for Gardiner, but King is worth a top 20-30 pick at least. We should have blackmailed St. Kilda to give us a higher pick, or send King into the pre-season draft, where Richmond has first pick and would nab him (They've expressed interest, and it would cover them not get Kruzer), meaning that if we lost, St. Kilda would too.

You have to be fierce with these clubs. They will screw you over. We should have taken the offer for pick 90 as the insult that it is , and tell St. Kilda to shove it sideways. We would then threaten to negotiate with other interested clubs and get the best deal. If St. Kilda wanted King enough, they would have to sacrifice a bit, and come back to us with a good offer.

King is a AFL and VFL ruckman, an ex-All-Australian ruck and former captain. We owe him more than to trade him for a crap pick. Even Stephen Wells, who got Matthew Egan at 60 in the draft, won't be able to get anything decent from pick 90.

Getting pick 90 is no better than getting nothing for him in the pre-season draft. It may be a nice gesture. But nice guys finish last. You need to be ruthless in trade week, and not accept crap from anybody.

St. Kilda, enjoy Steven King for two years. But that's two years of knowing that you did us wrong. We won't just get pick 90. We will get our payment out of your blood on the football field, when you see us win another flag, while your "team of champions" continues to fail under the weight of expectations.

Like most of the other posters, we give up two players for nothing, we will not use pick 90. Great news for us, clear the space and in the meantime have the ability to give guys who can't get a run a second chance.

I'm very happy about the club and players for getting this.

Secondly, we have guys on rookie contracts that will need to be looked at next year. They will be asking for a lot more.

Trade week has been great for the Cats. Absolutely chuffed. Excellent work.

Well Charlie does tend to play for the opposition. :p

Re: shit trade

Its fairly simple to follow, you need to have 3 picks in the draft so we needed to move 4 players out (Davenport is to be elevated).
King was on big $$ and was no longer required by the club.
Before the trades we had picks 17, 34, 50 and would have passed on the rest.
Before the king deal we had picks 17, 34, 44, 50, 62 and therefore a pick for King after 44 would not be required so it may as well be pick 90 because it wont be used.

The Cats Brass - All class

From Balme:

"A few of the players were keen to continue and were looking for perhaps other clubs, and we certainly helped a couple with it.

"I think the four guys who have gone have been exceptional Geelong people and very good players, and have got an opportunity elsewhere.

"So, we've given a leg up to the other teams in a way, but I think our responsibility is to the player and we've tried to help them as much as we could."

Did what was best for the players, instead of treating them like pawns. A big thumbs up from me. :thumbsu:

Re: shit trade

Don't you have to use any picks you trade for? I was pretty sure you had to but surely Geelong won't be using pick 90....

Totally agree with you GFC.

We could have either delisted them, or try to move them on for draft picks that we don't need. Therefore they are guaranteed of a further contract.

I'm very happy some of these guys got a second chance, as in trade weeks gone by players would go through to the PSD and not get picked up, i.e. Woewodin.

It is a shame that King couldn't be fitted into the cap, however, it takes two to tango. He could have taken a drastic cut in pay to stay on, alas he didn't.

Re: The Cats Brass - All class

Yeh all good and well i guess. Not sure about trading King to St Kilda, who could be a legitimate contender against us next year.

Little bit of 'We're better than everyone, lets help our strays find a home' about it. Which i dont like.

But then King has been a great player for the club, there wouldn't be many Geelong Players over the years who will retire with his roll call of honours. So all power to him.

None of the players played any substantial part in the home and away season, so the effect on the team is minimal.

Re: shit trade

I'm amazed some people still don't get this trade.

Forget pick 90 - it is irrelevant.
Rather than delist the players and let them take the luck of the dice in the PSD, the club has found them all new homes.
Well done GFC!

Re: shit trade

We will pickhim up with our last pick weather it 90 or not.

His name is Donahue. And what has the weather got to do with the particular pick that you have?

Selwood and Hawkins are not on rookie contracts. They are senior listed players.

Re: The Cats Brass - All class

It would have been classier to see King play out his career as a Geelong player. I think he deserved that.

But saying that, they traded for the club's benefit and seaking new opportunities for those 4 players was something that they didn't need to do. So well done and good luck to those 4 guys.:thumbsu:

Re: I know how we ended up with Pick 90

Yeah but they'd be on a base rate as new players. When they renegotiate their contracts their price tag will jump massively, Selwood especially.
