Haha so an essendon supporter thinks Ahern will drop to 17 and go to essendon

Hi KM, love your work, only 2 weeks out from draft day now!! :)

Out of curiosity, who do you think will miss out on being drafted this year from the AIS Academy and what do you think of its merits as a vehicle for developing talent?

Plausible misses but most likely go: Jaden McGrath, Jackson Nelson, Daniel Capiron.

Might miss: Nicholas Coughlan, Jesse Watchman, Matthew Hammelmann, Sean McLaren, Bradley Walsh.

Most likely miss: Liam Griffiths, Mac Bower, Duom Dawam, Ryan Lim, Matthew Ah Siu, Sam Bevan.

Thoughts on my top 50?

Pretty much as is expected to happen and you've got guys in roughly the ranges they are expected to go. You'll probably end up with 7-15 of those eventual draft positions right which is good with the unpredictability of the draft.

Where does it say that Dumont's been delisted?

Sorry, might have jumped the gun there - thought I heard on the news he was delisted when he got charged for the incident with the cabbie - looks like Im wrong there.

Thanks mate - looks like they have really dropped the ball with the AIS Squad this year. If, worst case, 11-12 of them miss out, then that's valuable funding that they have essentially wasted.

Compared to the 5 that went undrafted last year, and 4 the year before that would be a disaster.

What really struck me hard was when I found out that Petracca wasnt even included in the initial squad!

He was only a last minute replacement for Darcy Moore who pulled out.

You need to look deeper at the AIS selections and placements and the overall dynamics of this group of players. You're only skimming the surface as to the "deemed" high ratio of "misses"! But wasted funds. Not likely. Look deeper!

With Petracca it wasn't so clear coming into the season that he would be a top pick. Perhaps to some, but last year he was an overweight, undersized key forward who could as required play on a forward flank rather than the other way around. He was a dominant marking forward who had the strength and scoreboard impact but it wasn't obvious that he would make the transition into the midfield and more a role up the ground. So it wasn't clear coming into the season as well performed as he was, that he would be a first round selection.

I'd say the WA boys haven't been well identified but otherwise it's a case of things change and these guys have just been passed by.

Well my post was asking for discussion which would lead to this "deeper" analysis.

I honestly know jack-all and was hoping to get some replies like this to understand the program.

Just seems to me that if they're pushing/promoting/training 31 individuals, you'd like to think that the majority of them would be selected on draft day or you've wasted a lot of resources!

Talk is we're pretty committed to Godard and Pickett.
Tweet from Cameron about a tall, speed outside and inside ball winner.
So maybe Ahern instead of Wright and Godard instead of Lever.

I am sure that you will find that there were more than 5 that missed out last year, it was 11 I think, then a couple were rookied, but definitely more than 5.

Seems good to me, but no Dean Gore? I have him around 30

Plausible misses but most likely go: Jaden McGrath, Jackson Nelson, Daniel Capiron.

Might miss: Nicholas Coughlan, Jesse Watchman, Matthew Hammelmann, Sean McLaren, Bradley Walsh.

Most likely miss: Liam Griffiths, Mac Bower, Duom Dawam, Ryan Lim, Matthew Ah Siu, Sam Bevan.

Pretty much as is expected to happen and you've got guys in roughly the ranges they are expected to go. You'll probably end up with 7-15 of those eventual draft positions right which is good with the unpredictability of the draft.
KM, why do you think that Nelson has slid in the draft order? I remember you had him first round earlier in the year, McGrath also, I know he hasnt played much but he wont have forgotten how to play!

It would be interesting to know what their mission statement is because I'd be surprised if they didn't have one.

Is anyone aware of what it is?

Nelson I just hoped would progress further than he has this season. Not super quick and has not become the dominant midfielder I would have hoped as still more a back flanker. Over the second half of the season he has also struggled for form and has failed to take that next step. Doesn't mean he won't get drafted, but if he does it is more in the back half and probably late second round onward.

On McGrath his not playing hurts but he also doesn't really have the production either behind him these past two seasons having not played u18 champs and only having lean performances in the tac cup due to injury. He just early season looked excellent in the AIS games, particularly v Collingwood which he will hope gets him drafted, but having not really played much this year and when he has he has looked only ok in the TAC Cup it puts him more into the later rounds of the draft.

Frankly, I think there are a lot of internal dynamics that happen in these "selected" situations, and unfortunately we wouldn't be privy to all that goes on, and there are a lot of questions as to how these boys are "BEST" displayed. Year to year it varies. Coaches vary. Their personal preferences come into play. Their style of coaching. You have to remember the coaches are also there to show their stuff too! But you're right, I think it's blatantly WRONG to think that if these kids were good enough to get there, and believe me they had to work hard to get there, then you would think then they should all get a fair shake. I mean you get kids like Goddard who had a terrible carnival and he's still up in the top picks? You get a kid like McLaren who was shifted into a "new" and unfamiliar position during the carnival and he went at it, had terrific performances against Lynch and Goddard, got on the "bests" and he's dropping down. So where's the logic in it all? Cause I'm having trouble seeing it. You've got Lever who hasn't played one game the entire season and he's up there as well. I don't know. To me it seems out of whack. I'd like to get KM to comment on this so I can understand it too!

KM PLEASE COMMENT ON ABOVE POST! WE NEED YOUR THOUGHTS!

KM, again you have done an amazing job & I really enjoy reading your opinions.

Now Melbourne have four list spots available we will most likely use #40 & #53 in the ND.

First & foremost, we really need to bring in more mids both inside & outside types.

I'm not sure if it's a stretch but at #53 I really like the look of Billy Evans. He seems a natural footballer that reads the ball very well & looks to have great hands & gets his hands on the ball in contested situations. Although he does look one paced.

He fits the Roos mould too being a tall mid (AFL site has him at 187cm & Inside Footy Draft Special at 190cm)

We are likely to get Brayshaw & McCartin, with Stretch the outside mid as FS. You have us taking Howe at #40.

Your thoughts on us taking Evans at #53?

The AIS AFL Academy isn't perfect. They load up on who they think the best/most draftable talents are, but with these kids so young that can change in a year and the talent identification isn't perfect.

Is it beneficial? To an extent, but it's not comparable to say the academy system which really properly fast-tracks the development of guys and elevates them.

As with all systems it could be better.

If there are more specific questions you want to ask go ahead. But they're the basics summarised.

Stretch will be taken at 42.

Billy Evans can I expect be had as a rookie so I probably wouldn't say use a national draft pick on him unless it's clear he will be taken by that point. But big guy and some scope to develop. Could long term develop into something. I'd like to see someone take a chance on him.

At 53 I'd be hoping Dean Gore or Peter Bampton slide through. Both at that stage will represent value with the latter particularly a real chance to get through having missed the u18 champs and the second half of the season.

Reading over my post it was badly worded asking if it was a stretch at #53 for Evans? I can see how you thought I may have been asking about Billy Stretch there! (I knew he was FS at 42)

I would certainly be happy to rookie Billy Evans though! Just looks to be a natural footballer.

I thought I did ask specifically...like please explain why in a system where the talent has been selected and they do obviously fit the bill would there be such shifts, as in the players I mentioned above. Yes, these kids are young, but their selection has shown they can play, so please do address the players I've mentioned above. I'm very curious how it works. I mean in the 3 I've mentioned, one had a shocking nationals, one didn't play, one had some good games and yet....
