News Koch blocks Tredders push for the board

There is more to this than Koch v Tredrea, the media world has turned it's back on Warren Tredrea and now the PAFC has done the same. There have to be reasons. I realise that Tredders took a stance on vaccination but I have to think it was more than that and he has rubbed some people up the wrong way. I wonder if Cos Cardone still has connections at NINE?

I also think it is a tad presumptuous to go to the PAFC door requesting a seat on the Board. These days the majority of Board Members appear to be appointed with an area of expertise in mind, albeit that these areas of expertise are sometimes clouded but under the current system the Board has the right to choose subject to AFL endorsement. If I had my way the entire Board would be elected by the Members but that is not the way it is done and we have to live with the system that exists.

The media will beat this up for all it is worth but we should not let it develop into a crisis that we do not need, if Warren Tredrea wants a seat on the Board there are ways of getting it done provided Tredders and those who support him are prepared to wait.
Tredders rubbed people up the wrong way because he held them to a higher standard.

I'm OK with that.

* me the club announced it on December 14th, and emailed a notice to members on January 30th
Seems like a strange thing to want to get ****ed about. Not all people follow social media. Some people actually need a reasonable amount of notice to attend events as they have other commitments to manage.

Tredrea understands he’d probably rattle the cages and why he won’t be handed a spot.

He is also rattling he cage a bit by having this article come out now isn’t he?

He might do more good being outspoken this year regardless. The AFL wants a neat and tidy board, that won’t change.

Perhaps Koch knows himself and Ken are off end of year anyway.

I think Warren would have done the Club more good if he had taken the jab, stayed in the media and kept the blow torch on Koch and Hinkley. Obviously his personal views got in the way of that continuing. I never heard Warren's objections to taking the Covid jab and at one stage he was saying that he was not anti vax and that he had had all his required shots in his youth. I know Tredders through junior footy and he is a nice guy, he always remembers me and says hello even though I was basically a casual acquaintance from his younger days. We have to respect Warren's right to hold a personal view on the issue but his stance on the Covid shot came as a real shock to me.

It is a pretty sad situation really.

It's not just the anti vax stuff, it's also the fact that he is a loose cannon in general.

His Twitter activities would not be seen in a positive light by the club. The fact that he has sued his former employer would not be seen in a positive light. His association with cookers like Craig Kelly and freedom marchers would not be seen in a positive light.

Most clubs in the AFL would be hesitant to put someone like that on the board imo.

And his public and unrestricted criticism of the club obviously would not go down well, for better or worse.

If you strip away that stuff I think he is a good candidate. You need football people on the board. You need disagreeable people on the board. He has a reasonable understanding of the media and business landscape as well.

He is a better option than Cahill I reckon. But the external stuff is real.

He's done some kicking training from memory.

I'm kinda mixed on the idea too though. To me anyone who was antivax/antimask .... leaves some big question marks as to their thought processes. But he is a club legend and he bleeds black and white.
That's the other side of it, he's taken a selfish attitude, which is what I believe all anti vaxxers did. Worry about themselves as opposed to the greater good.

Is that the attitude of someone you'd want on a board, for a team sport?

But, like you said, he's a legend, I've also had the up most respect for anything he's ever said. His heart is in the club.

I wouldn't be against it at all. No tears from me. Just a shame it's like this.

Hang in there Warren, the members will elect you. We all like to point the finger at Ken but our board has been a joke for a while now, Cahill wasn’t the answer we were hoping for, ditto snowdon, Wanganeen lol but Tredders I have faith in. Pretty clear that’s why he’s been blocked.

No-one knows what, or even if Cahill achieved anything during his time on the board, Snowden appears to have disappeared into the woodwork without a trace, and Wanganeen was unfortunately no more than a bonnet mascot, so the only chance we probably have of getting our club back is for Tredrea to get the numbers to mount a challenge, and force a spill so he can replace Koch.

Whether he is prepared to do it, or even if it could be done under the current AFL `arrangement' is of course the unknown!

I'm a bit conflicted on this one

On one hand, I would agree with pretty much everything Tredrea says football wise.

On the other hand. He's ... weird.

His odd Covid stance, decision making acumen and risk assessment type skill says he probably isn't the best person for what is a reasonably powerful position. Ex players without much experience in senior management roles can make a right mess of things.

Id prefer he be a forward line development coach or something.

As an aside. He's still better than J.Brown.

He literally offers nothing. You could say those things about Sir Donald Bradman and he was a campaigner of an administrator and caused serious rifts at SACA. You allow people like him on the board and you get Mark Riccuto. He hasn't had any serious involvement with the club for 15 years. Here's an article from 2014 that looks at our 2004 premiership team: Class of '04: Where are they now?.

Basically everyone on that list is more qualified to be on the board than Tredrea. I thought I was clear in my post. Whatever your criteria, there is someone better than Tredrea. It would be a sad indictment on our club if the best we could find is 'some guy that won a flag with us 20 years ago, that has had no day to day involvement with AFL for 15 years, has no business experience, has had a massively sheltered existence as a footballer/media personality, and has expressed interest mostly because he has some free time on his hands from being sacked from his previous job'. This is not a anti player thing - Wanganeen was a great appointment. I am sure you can find 1 passionate, successful person, with some AFL credibility who adds more than Tredrea.
My God. Are you an idiot? Wanganeen was a great appointment?

I’m ok with him becoming a member elect board member. I’m also fine with the club saying no, you have to become a member elect board member.

Not sure he has the runs on the board post career to just jump onto the board willy nilly. He will cause disruption though which is good

Warren went and asked after he spoke to Darren Cahill, who recommended to Koch that Warren replace him.

What is presumptuous about Warren then asking to be considered for the board after he was recommended by Darren??

If Darren didn't tell Warren he recommended him, Warren probably would have never considered a board position.

We only had 1 elite sports industry person on our board, they have seen how things work, they resigned due to international travel commitments and being out of Oz for about 35 weeks a year, and have recommended one of our most elite players from our AFL era, arguably our most driven, to replace him - then he is rejected by some bullshit "good governance and transparency" line.

So Koch is saying to Kathy Nagle you are really useless because when a past player wants to run for the board he should run for the member elected position. Warren will run against you in late 2023/2024, so you are effectively terminated??

Who is going to produce more good for the football part of the business, Kathy Nagle over 12 months or Warren next February. Its madness.

Sounds a good basis for several questions tomorrow night REH

Koch not wanting Tredders on the board has nothing to do with his political views. This isn't China or North Korea, freedom of political expression is still technically legal, even if it is frowned upon on the internet and in much of the media.

If you want to know why they don't want Tredders involved, go listen to or watch the radio segment with Rowe, Tredders and Hinkley post the 2021 prelim debacle. There's your answer.

I think Warren would have done the Club more good if he had taken the jab, stayed in the media and kept the blow torch on Koch and Hinkley.

like a good boy
