Recommitted Lachie Neale [OOC 2023 - Will honour his contract]

If he leaves (as widely reported), what will Brisbane get in return?

  • Two good 1st round picks

  • Top 10 pick and change

  • A 1st & a 2nd

  • Later 1st rounder

  • Two 2nd rounders

  • Early 2nd rounder

  • Other 2nd round pick

  • Less than a 2nd rounder

33 year old Gary Ablett Jr. yielded Gold Coast and end of 1st rounder and a 2nd the following year when he went back to Geelong after winning a 2nd Brownlow

A top ten pick and a 2022 2nd would be more than reasonable - Lions might even throw in a couple of their 50s picks on top.

The AFL manipulates GAJ's return to Geelong by giving them outrageous, OTT compo for Motlpp (pick 19) which they on traded to Port.

Like your suggestion though.

Unfortunately, that is a lie. He bailed on Fremantle the moment his front ended contract became tight and he is doing the same to us. He's only in it for money and Fremantle will be paying a lot to bring him back there.
100%.

Got a strong feeling this was the plan from the start.

At the time I said Neale will be back when his wife has a baby.

It’s an interesting one to pick because Geelong were having absolutely none of what GC were demanding (and rightfully so given his age) so like you said, the AFL fabricated a way to get them ridiculous compo to pass onto GC.

If the AFL would like to help turn Tucker into end of first round compo then I am happy to chuck that into the deal of it helps

The whole family excuse is a load of crap. They knew they were going up there to have a family and this somehow only became a problem the moment his front ended contract finished. Not last year when he was still being payed 900k. There are also little restrictions between WA and Qld, so they would have no issues going between the states. Likewise, Neale isn't apart from his partner or child at all so he isn't missing any moment watching his child growing up. If he really wanted to go back to Perth to raise his family, he would have waited the contract out or at least talked to the club about it. He did none of that and went behind the club's back to talk to Fremantle about a return. He didn't talk to west coast at all (knowing they couldn't afford him) it's only about money with him

You are 100% right.

He could have spoken to the club as you said and the Lions could have targeted a star player from another team.

Buy low sell high is a concept Freo regularly don’t understand.
If we buy this clown back for anything other than an insult price then we can continue to flounder in mediocrity.

Take the high picks to the draft and roll the dice on some young unknowns.
Alas, I don’t think we’ll do that and I’m praying Neale decides to stay in Brisbane.

Fremantle give Cerra to Carlton for pick 6 and 25
Fremantle give picks 25, 27 and 2022 first to Brisbane and pay $200,000 for 2 years for Neale.
Brisbane give Neale to Fremantle. Pick 47 to Carlton.
In all honesty a deal is almost impossible to satisfy all clubs. I don't see Neale as a high priority need for Fremantle. In fact he will prolong their rebuild.

Thats not actually correct...ablett was a 5 pick upgrade from 24 to 19 plus pick 33..not a first rounder on his own.

Brisbane have got Ashcroft who is very highly rated in the 2022 draft. Don't think they will be after a Freos 2022 First round pick

We've rolled the dice for over 25 years, hows that working out for us?

I disagree. With all due respect, are you married with children? It takes a village and if 2021 has taught us anything it is that being close to your loved ones is everything. The lockdowns of 21 vs 20 are harder in a lot of ways, and that feeling that comes with it is cumulative.

It's not enough to just be there with your kids. Having kids has brought me closer to my parents than I thought I ever would be as an adult. Not seeing them weekly now is the pits and the last thing I want for my family.

Anyway...things change, including your personal circumstances, feelings about certain things etc. I understand him wanting to go back after the year we've all had. Maybe he only spoke to Freo because he wants to go back there? Who knows.

In an industry where you can work from most
states why wouldn't you choose the one with your family in it, especially when father time comes? Because you 'owe the club'? Haha. They'll cut you as soon as it suits them.

Bit harsh mate, Covid has a hell of a lot to do with it, Family is everything IMO..

Covid has changed things, but he's also not Bryce Gibbs who was drafted and ended up playing for the Blues from 18 to 28 years old.

Neale chose to move to Brisbane while under contract at 25 and already married. It's not like deciding to have a family just came out of the blue.

You don’t have to yell.

I'm married with children.... we live a 24 hour flight away from my parents, that distance suits me perfectly well.

I like your sentiment but it's not universal

Doubt it. fu** baseless speculation every time a player requests a trade like this is nauseating. Why do people need to come up with this sh*t to vilify every single player that requests a trade?
So… turns out his brisbane contract was front loaded..

Thus my question was valid and you can apologise for your hysterically over the top response at anytime..

If I was Freo I’d leave neale exactly where he is..

Keep the draft pick they have and will also get from the Cerra trade and if they feel they need a mature body added into side for next season throw a chunky deal in front of Parker who’s a free agent and wont cost them a thing in draft capital.

Neale signed his current contract.. now wants to reneg on it.. i fail to see why freo should have to pay through the nose and compromise their future for a 29 year old.

He shouldve thought about that prior to signing his current contract and, with glee im sure, accepting a massive amount of it frontloaded.. now it seems he has form when it comes to this.

And your going on about it like he’s somehow going to be stuck in brissy for the rest of his life.. in two years from now his current contract ends and he can request a move back to perth then..

The swap was Ablett & p24 & future 4th for p19 and future second (bear in mind that Geelong was near the top of the table at the time).

Besides, as others have pointed out, that deal was very much sweetened by the Motlop compo.

Starting to think Neale's formal 'request to leave' will only come if there's a behind the scenes deal in principle that Freo will play ball.

Garlick has come out and said (paraphrasing here) "yes, there's a connection with Freo, but we need to put that aside, and we'll look at the situation objectively". And has also said "we have specific needs for our list".

We need to hear from Freo - and that will likley only come after a formal request to trade, or an about face to stay put.

I'm not sure Freo will be busting their balls to facilitate this deal. Reckon Neale's manager is just working out and possibly even balls deep in negotiations to see if Freo will even play ball before he comes back to the Lions with his so called 'decision'.
