GWS Giants
Premiership quality football from about halfway through the season. They would want to win a flag in the next year or two before Coniglio (30) Whitfield (29) Kelly (29) are past their best. Tom Green
should be looking at Dusty / Petracca finals series in prior years. Love they finally recruited and played some forward pressure in the last couple of years, what a difference.
Collingwood
Should have lost both of their first two finals. Should have won more easily in the grand final but opposition was only Brisbane, probably their easiest finals opponent. Added Schultz, but Pendlebury 36, Sidebottom 33, Howe 33, Elliot 31. Lots of run and pressure is good in finals.
Melbourne
Despite a messy year last year, they still had 16 wins and dominated their two losing finals but lost on poor goalkicking accuracy each time. Petracca still the best player in the comp. Question marks on the longevity of their coach.
St Kilda
Will shockingly rise again with more improvement across their list. Hill and NWM is great run and carry. Max King
+ smalls is a great forward line, it's frontal pressure time
Brisbane Lions
Pretty good but not the best
Port Adelaide
JHF Rozee Butters is an incredibly good top 3 players and all young. Good trades again. Not quite playing smoothly enough to make a deep finals impact.
Sydney
No Don Pyke as assistant = back to the classic Longmire grind? Adding Grundy aligns with that. Nice team but still not sure which players are the finals match-winners.
Adelaide
Very optimistic ending to 2023, with our season ended by a heartbreaking minor round loss that wasn't our fault; instead of the traditional non-competitive finals loss. Look forward to business as usual resuming this year.
Carlton
Should have lost both of their first two finals. Great core. Still need more run and pressure. Still not convinced by Voss as coach.
Geelong
Even older than last year, even though they actually played decent football and could probably have finished higher.
Western Bulldogs
Season 10 of Luke Beveridge as coach. List management keeps adding more of what they already have. Despite so many high possession midfielders they add another one with pick 6. Despite already having Naughton and JUH and Darcy and Lobb they add another 200cm forward with pick 15. Need more quality low possession high impact players like wings, forward pressure.
Fremantle
Still don't rate Brayshaw or their gameplan. Departed Henry and Schultz are both really good and big losses.
North Melbourne
I like their skillful young players
Richmond
Taranto and Hopper trades not the smartest for a team already on the decline. Low skill midfielders always make teams worse. Yze was a likely AFL coach for years before he finally became an actual AFL coach, will be interested to see how it goes. Could make an argument Martin/Prestia/Lynch/Bolton is a good enough core to carry to finals, but more likely they get a bunch of injuries and realise an early draft pick would be more helpful.
Gold Coast
Hardwick is a career winner. This guy knows how to win. Yes he has been coaching for a while, he is a little bit old now. Hut not too old, only 51 years which is really quite young, maybe even too young. Perhaps in 31 more years he would be a good age to run for president. That should give him long enough to straighten out Gold Coast first.
Hawthorn
Like how they play. Will Day injured again, Dylan Moore
injured too, not that many high skilled players outside that.
Essendon
Still too many low skill players. Added another one in Duursma. Should probably have finished about 4 positions lower last year. Brad Scott is a decent coach though so would be surprised if they totally lose the plot.
West Coast
More pre-season injuries, very young list now.
