Re: Laidler promoted, 5 Delisted

1. Can't hit again on a double down.
2. You double down then would hit again with a 17? Crazy.

:)

Double down part aside.....if you're on 17 and the dealer has 8,9,10, A
You MUST hit again.. Full Stop.

Re: Laidler promoted, 5 Delisted

Fair call Vegas... seems they'll retain Rangarama , A Varcoe and Allright as 2nd year rookies so s'pose that's what you meant by 3 rookie spots left (?). Non-signing of Wojo might come into play as well, if he won't take a year's contract.

Congratulations to Jez Laider who has been promoted to the senior list.

Farewell to these 5: Tenace, S Simpson, McKenna, Donohue and Weadon.

Interesting that we have chopped all young kids (along with Tenace).

We will miss you Blackjack, although this is probably 2 (or more) years too late.

Link.

Scott Simpson
Everything is promising as far as his injury is concerned, and he's excited about being able to play some footy next year.

Re: Laidler promoted, 5 Delisted

Is there something about Simpson we don't know about?

I thought he was relatively on track.

He wasn't busting down any doors, but I certainly wasn't expecting him to be wiped.

Was going just ok footy-wise I think ... also, not sure if he's as dedicated off the field as he should be. Might not be the bestest influence on some of our younger crop

Re: Laidler promoted, 5 Delisted

Disappointed that all of McKenna, Simpson and Donohue have been given the chop and hope they're all rookied. Interesting also that while they've got rid of Weadon (which I expected) no word on Moles.

It's interesting - that brings us to five guys off the main list, two on (Drum and Laidler) with no word on Harley or DJ. At the very least we're making three selections. Also interesting that we've delisted two talls going into a draft where everyone agrees there are bugger all to choose from.

EDIT: We kept Lonergan cause he's contracted.

Shocked that Simpson and McKenna and Donohue got the chop. All three have only had two seasons to develop. (2008 and 2009)

Simpson looked good but his kicking let him down.

At least we only have to worry about one Simpson now because after all these years I still get the 2 confused. Having said that a bit suprised to see Scott go

Why did we keep Lonergan?

Versatile tall. Club need to keep him for awhile longe till Gillies/Brown etc mature a bit more.

Insurance, you'd think. Nothing else. He can play CHF and CHB.
Lonergan being under contract seems more likely for mine.

Would have rather Geelong kept S. Simpson or D. McKenna over Lonergan but they were probably out of contract whereas Lonergan has, I think, a year to run.

...no word on Moles.
Suspect Moles is a given since he has done his 2 year rookie stint. Unless the AFL changes the rule he has to come off the list doesn't he?

How does a team re-rokkie a player? Do we get first crack or can other teams rookie a player who was a rookie at a different club?
Club won't get first crack...first in, best dressed.

We will have to pick them in the Rookie Draft. Teams don't have first crack on your own team. It works like the National Draft.

That being said Im sure these guys will nominate for the National Draft. Will be interesting to see where they train over the pre-season.

Interesting timing.

Why announce the 5 are gone now before we have confirmed the older players futures , who seem to be more likely to go. But now we have 5 gone , Haley and DJohnson doubtful , Wojo still not commuted.

Now if Wojo does decide to chase his superannuation at North and DJ pulls the pin , then it seems the club thinks Harley is playing on or we are going to look at the PreSeason draft for a top up experienced player such as Russell Robertson for eg. who would love a chance to play and is not worried about dollars.

I like that idea! Gamble is going backwards. Robbo would be perfect to extend our window.

While I didn't expect Scott Simpson to get the chop, I can't say I'm suprised. I never thought either him or McKenna would make it, and certainly expected the latter to be delisted this year. Perhaps we'll rookie one or both of them... who knows.

I think we will be looking for a couple of forwards now.

Eastern Rangers pair Luke McDonald and Ben Griffiths could be options.

Im sure will be trying very hard to pick up a local Geelong boy. Ben Cunnington, Gary Rohan and Allen Christensen are the pick of the bunch and I would say we would pounce on any of these guys with pick 17. Cunnington will go top 10, but we may get Rohan or Christensen.

Are you serious? Robinson is ****ing useless, spends the five minutes of each game he's near the ball trying to take mark of the year and looking like a total tool as a result.

Re: Laidler promoted, 5 Delisted

no word on Moles.
You would be waiting on the AFL before making a decision.

There is a proposal before the AFL currently that would see players being able to stay on the rookie list for up to 3 years before having to be either permanently promoted or delisted (up from the current 2). So they'll be a few clubs postponing decisions on their borderline 2nd year rookies until the AFL officially announces whether they'll be changing that rule or not.

Gamble has just turned 22, Robertson couldn't get a game for the spooners.

Gamble did have a shocking year but I've seen enough over a few years to know he has it in him.

I didn't expect so many delistings, especially with the futures of both Harley and David Johnson still up in the air.

I'm disappointed for Kane Tenace, but hopefully he gets a chance elsewhere.
Not at all surprised to see Weadon go, and even though the writing was on the wall for Adam Donohue i thought he might get one more year given how young he is.
I didn't see the Scott Simpson or Dan McKenna cuts coming but i trust the club to make the right decisions.

And finally, congrats to Jez Laidler on the promotion.
He's shown enough at VFL level and i look forward to seeing how he develops.

why in these troubled gc times would we keep a guy on the list who will most probably never make the senior list (my opinion from the lil i have seen of him)?

Have nothing to add on what's already been said. I too feel we might rookie some of those lads if we can. Congrats to Laidler, and all the best to the guys who have been delisted. I hope other opportunities arise for you.

Re: Laidler promoted, 5 Delisted

Why did we keep Lonergan?

Because he's contracted, so next year's salary would be included in the cap if we chopped him, which would put him over the cap.

Scott Simpson is the victim of this, as had Lonergan been able to be traded, he'd have stayed, and I reckon he deserved to. Had a great 2008 and then an injury wrecked 2009 (ala Mitch Brown) and I think he still had some great potential. Wonder if he's a chance to be re-drafted (maybe as a rookie?)
I say this because his delisting now means we're quite thin in the key forward stocks with Mooney's retirement imminent. Unless you consider either Lonergan or Gamble options at CHF, which I don't (I think Gamble has a future for us, just not at CHF) it means that unless Wells drafts someone in the next few weeks who comes on really quickly, we're putting all our eggs in the Mitch Brown basket.
The other option I suppose is if tomahawk becomes the CHF after Mooney retires and Ottens plays deep forward as he gets older, but I don't think we have enough good ruckmen on our list to do this full time. So I am surprised Simpson is gone but I'll trust Balme, Wells and co with it.

Other than this, most of the delistings are logical.
Laidler played well enough to get promoted and it's no surprise, and the recruitment of Drum pretty much spelt the end for McKenna. Donohue is a little more unlucky as his VFL form was good most of the year, but again it's not a big surprise.

Kane has only stayed as long as he has because he was contracted so we couldn't chop him.

Weadon is a decent kid with potential but always out injured.

No real surprises. I will be interested to see if Tommy, Matty and DJ all retire.

This would mean we'd have: (senior list)
Ins : Drum, Laidler, 4 draftees
Outs: Harley, Egan, DJ, Tenace, McKenna, Donohue, (Mumford, Weadon, rookies)

I would thus expect at least 1 more out maybe if we plan to use all our picks at the draft.
