She's taking us for fools. Absolutely pathetic management from her over the past month or so. I actually was quite impressed with her early on, but she's lost all respect after trying to defend the indefensible.
The Petracca scenario being ticked off - Now yes, we don't know the full details around what happened, however we have eyes, and it was blatantly obvious there was something more sinister going on with him. His career was at risk, if not his life. Another hit and there could have been a very different outcome.
The Kangaroos 50m - Aside from some Collingwood fans, there's hardly anyone in the entire industry and fanbase that does not believe it was not a 50. Even a number of Collingwood fans agree they got away with it.
The Father/Son/Academy picks scenario - I don't think there is anyone that thinks the system is currently fair. It is an absolute shambles, and yes, she inherited it and is trying to fix it. But teams were planning with the current system in place, and made moves last trade period to position themselves accordingly. You cannot simply pull the rug from beneath them now. It's a crap system, but it's a system that has been in place for years now. As someone in the media said, NDaicos, JDaicos, DMoore, Quaynor given to Collingwood for peanuts. But now that GC are getting something out of it, we must fix it now?
Reserves competition another mess.
Goal line tech/cameras/review system changes mid season etc etc.
The game is an utter mess through pathetic management, but all they care about is $$$ and crowd numbers.

Pies have won a number of these tight games by being gifted wrong or non calls.
Umpire knew it was a 50 metre penalty but didn't have the guts to call it, same against us last year when Dawson was whacked in the head in front of our goal, umpire just pretended it didn't happen.
Laura's explanation means any player can now run over the mark and plead he was confused. She should have just said what was obvious to every non Pies supporter, the umpire was WRONG not paying 50 metres.

100% correct. what Kane said essentially is that everyone is allowed to run over the mark by 10m and run directly at the opposition player and just say thay they thought it was touched off the boot.
It was one of the worst calls in modern history and I feel like we can't even criticise Kane without being called a misogynist such is the landscape.
That's in your head mate. Don't jump at shadows.
I do have an issue with her age and experience, and I think thats fair game.
What I know for sure is that I'd rather go and watch local footy than most AFL games right now. That's not her fault, but I don't have faith she'll fix it.

Why all the doom and gloom about the state of the game? Footy hasn't been this enjoyable since 2012!
There's no perfect time to make changes, but the reasonable and logical approach would be to provide adequate lead time for clubs to be able to plan in consideration of the pending changes, as opposed to AFTER they have planned for the upcoming drafts in consideration of the rules at the time.
How hard is it therefore for the AFL to change the rules today, effective from the 2026 National Draft?

When were Steve Hocking and/or Brad Scott ever exposed for not understanding the rules like Laura Kane in this situation?
At worst Steve and Brad exploited technicalities to justify a position, but they never blatantly misunderstood the rulebook like Laura has done here.

Great post …….. I did hear her regarding Petracca, her position the AFL is comfortable is astounding. Regarding the North 50m penalty is absurd.
In her attempt to protect the firm, she has made herself and the AFL look like a bunch of numpties.
Just own up to any obvious error and be accountable. The AFL has created a problem whereby umpires are confused, players are confused and supporters are fed up.
Kane suggests the umpire in the North game should have called play-on after he ran at a ball to mark and took 4 steps sideways, however umpires can’t even make quick calls for players who move off the line of a mark in general play.
The game has become a farce!!
I'm more confused as to why the umpire took so long to blow the whistle for the mark. And aren't there 4 umpires now? Surely one of them realised that it was a 50m.
I don't know what was going on, but that game had numerous weird and wonderful umpiring decisions. The one where North got the HTB free kick, but somehow it ended up being advantage Collingwood was the weirdest of the lot.
Kane's performance yesterday was typical AFL. Lies, bulltish, damage control all said with a straight face. This is the way in the corporate world. Trying to protect umpires is causing more damage, just admit a mistake was made and be done with it. We're all grown ups.

I don't think it was typical AFL at all - it was sloppy and poorly prepared.
This was unprecedented incompetency for them.
And for fear of misogynistic accusations, the AFL will not or can not relieve her of her position. They even got her an appearance on The Front Bar to make sure she is viewed as one of the boys.

Agreed, the 4 umpire system was brought in the ensure sufficient decision coverage of a game evolving into a ballistic missile, when viewing games live, they spend just as much time looking at each other, to validate or override decisions, as they do the play.
The advantage to the pies was another howler as time wasted during this error was never added back to the time clock.
If the game is to be truly improved, let’s open up a proper and open dialogue with all game stakeholders, including supporters.

Every AFL back office exec should be sacked to find the salary to put Nathan Buckley in that role. Do you want football operations to work? Appoint someone who understands and has success at every level of how football operates, including the media.
And bring in whoever Kerry Packer used to blow up world cricket to blow up the AFL Commission and governance structure.
As a novel idea, give people responsibility who have shown success with that responsibility previously. Sheesh.

Then compare to Gils 14 yr (must of been a gumby) progression through various AFL roles to CEO.
Just not showing any of these talents ATM but clearly given her history, she must be soon to shine.
Or she has been parachuted in for diversity reasons and doesn't have the talents necessary, which is increasingly becoming more likely when you look at:
