That's all 'Leading Teams' is really. The players set out what actions that want to see and then vote for the leaders who best exhibit those actions. That in itself is common sense I would have thought. There's then a feedback process throughout the season where players can stand up and comment on their teammates actions.

It all sounds pretty sensible but there are a number of ways to get there. My view on our club is that standards sounded like they were either dropping or quite low and that this sort of system only works when standards are set higher. It seemed that this was a focus of Primus initially and will be something we work more with in the coming three seasons and hopefully beyond.

The interesting thing was that the way Matty said it made it sound like the PLAYERS want the standards set higher which is a good sign IMO.

p.s. Our leadership group of Dom, Broges and Surj already wreaks of a leading teams style leadership group.

Perhaps the only thing we were missing was the willingness of the coach to be part of the feedback process?

Yep, that's my gut feeling on Choco. Without any evidence I would suspect that he liked to be open to new ideas as long as they weren't from the players. Under the tough exterior I think there's a pretty sensitive bloke and I doubt he would have reacted well to what he would classify as criticism.

Good article. In my view Geelong have won 2 premierships by having a shitload of good players, not because of leading teams. Malthouse hates it. The Swans were doing Leading Teams before Leading teams was invented. The other teams listed doing it are also rans. It's as much a fad as Hawthorn's "Unsociable" football.

It's fluffy nothingness IMO. Employ common sense and let the leaders do their job. Good leaders will take on board good opinions and run with them.

Incorrect.Uneducated types like yourself have only just heard about it through recent media articles.It was at the Swans when they developed their "Blood Culture"-it helped set their framework.It was implemented at Collingwood through their two Grand Finals-who was the coach then?Geelong are in the category as the other two teams where the players and hierachy start to do things the Swans way or the Geelong way -not leading teams way because it has become their culture.The framework is designed for exactly that-the club itself to drive their own values and cultures.It is actually one of the best things you could ever do from both a sporting and life perspective.

What you're effectively blasting Papa G with is snot. Port Adelaide has a very direct framework that has stood the test of time. In recent times, Port Adelaide got away from the fundamental document which encapsulates the effort required from all to make the club succeed.

The Port Adelaide Creed + common sense approach = win.

No worries Ray:thumbsu::rolleyes:

Does the programme teach you that there's no spaces after full stops just like there is no "i" in team?

:thumbsu::thumbsu:

I agree. Our club has started to rebuild our own existing, successful culture that had been somewhat eroded in recent years.

I'm not convinced that Leading Teams is right for every club or is necessary to be successful.

No worries Ray:thumbsu::rolleyes:

exactly what I thought when reading that post

Does the programme teach you that there's no spaces after full stops just like there is no "i" in team?

...unless you work at Apple in an iTeam :p

nah, you're just supposed to stand in the middle of the circle and take it from everybody. isn't that how the program works ? :rolleyes:

Let's not get too carried away with what Matty said or try to read too much into it.
By empowering players, what you succeed in doing is stripping away player's security blankets. That is to say that the responsibility for a players performance in disciplinary as well as in playing terms rests with the individual player and the player must cop the consequences for his failures. There is no way out nor gold passes.
By players being given responsibility for their actions also engenders a great deal of confidence through achievement in these players and it eventually can lead to the feeling of invincibility - just like the pre Williams Port teams.
These are old concepts that have been "upgraded" by some in the sports psychology sphere but by the same token, some of the later methodologies that have been formulated, eg. "leadership groups" which, by their very nature, exclude a number of players thus creating cliques, are more suited to the corporate world where cutting the throat of one of your colleagues gets you a promotion.
Under Choco, we had the other extreme of the "control-at-all-costs" framework where Choco was the center of the universe and you did what he said or forget it and he did not countenance anything that would diminish his control.
The coach must be the supreme leader and any attempt to have things like "leadership groups", dictate to the coach is to undermine a coaches authority but what you certainly don't want, is for a coach to be seen as unapproachable and pompous by his players.

I agree Port Adelaide do have a great framework and at no stage did i question it.All I did was state that Papa G's statement was incorrect.As for the Ray call-very good.Just a mere player who has been through the programme a few times and believe in it.

In regards to Choco. I think his background as a teacher has some bearing on his autocrat nature. Football sides are like business's and sometimes new and untried approaches to get more out of your players can be successful. IMO we have a well balanced list and maybe something like leading teams can really improve our performances..

This post is correct. What Leading Teams do is nothing new and has been around for many decades.

All Ray did was to identify a niche market to use an old and proven human development philosophy and badge it up as a shiny new product called Leading Teams - all sexy and new and bloody costly.

He is a consultant after all - you know the "let me borrow your watch so I can tell you the time" type of guy.

I should know, because I am also a consultant:eek: and use the same product in a completely different industry, packaged a different way. Whether it works, depends a lot on the make-up and commitment of management and the participants.

That said, the fundamentals already exist in many organisations, particularly our club and there is no reason why we can do it ourselves - it just needs a good leader who understands what people need to take them to the mountain - Primus strikes me as being just that.

He is a consultant after all - you know the "let me borrow your watch so I can tell you the time" type of guy.

...and then they take your watch, as payment, and to ensure you are dependent on them in future.

I may have mentioned it before, I have heard a Port Phycoligist speak and he said you don't bring up an issue unless you have the answer. Imagine your local GP spots Cancer but it is a bad case and there is nothing to be done, would it be best to tell you unfortunately there is nothing that can be done or does he work on the other method and pat your arse and tell you to come back in 2 months knowing you will be dead?

I think honesty is the best way to deal with an issue, imagine Hitchy telling Mot's on Monday after the Darwin trip "Yo, M-M-M-Mot-Mots, you d-do realise that wh-what you done wah-was wrong-g-g. That Missus for y-yours c-could have han-handled it on her ow-own. Y-you just walked out o-on us a-all to cha-chase the skirt, no m-man should e-ever do that to his m-mates and f-f-family!"

Jackson Trengove butted in "HITCHY, DO NOT WORRY HIM, HE ABOVE US, HE TO GET WHAT COMING... I'LL BE BACK!"

Chad over heard all of this and threw out "You know my Dad said that Daniel is cancerous, he heard rumors from when he was at North, from a reliable source, and Dad said the back in his day"

Motlop left the change rooms, walked in to Matty's office and asked for some family time, Matty replied with "Don't be stupid boy, You have the ability to carry us to a flag, go out there, get the respect of your team mates through hard work, take a leaf out of Schulzy's book and combine the potentual with work ethic and you could be the ebst player in the land. I have a vision Daniel, were at the MCG, it's that last week in September, we are up against St.Kilda and you have already kicked 90 goals in all the matches through the Minor round and the Finals Dance. Stevie Baker waddles over to you and is getting up in your face, The New Daniel laughs at the man because he knows, believes and understands, this Steven Baker has nothing on him, after kicking you 100th goal for the season the rapturous 90,000 strong crowd errupt at the end of the 3rd quater, with two more in the last, you Daniel lead us to a 20 goal Grand Final win and YOU Daniel are honoured with the Norm Smith Medal."

"NOW GO AND GET IT DANIEL"

Motlop, runs out the Office, works his arse off and earns the respect of his team mates through months of hard work. Is a 90 goal All Australian in a side that finishes 9th and Matty rubs his hands together, Trades Motlop for a first round selection and a star junior player before the 2012 season and then Port Win the 2012 flag, Motlop is shattered and never plays football again...

WOW I love Matty's Vision...
