Leon Davis - The story..

I always thought that Barret said a lot without saying anything – i.e. top of the show we have some explosive news that will rock the AFL, Muppet comes on and it basically rumour has it or the word is... never facts and always based on maybe!

He is the biggest try hard I’ve seen not far behind the Robbo “the Lizard” Robinson.....when did Jurno’s become TV stars??? What a waste of oxygen, was so looking forward to Fox Footy but now find myself hardly watching any of the 500 footy (Media stars) shows we have........

I'm getting sick of the 'explosive' stories that end up being massive beat ups.

After the Ess v GC game ch7 had that lightweight Jay Clark do the HS preview for the next days paper. His segment was promoted as something like 'news that will rock collingwood'. That news was a completely made up hypothetical about how Luke Ball might be able to sue. No actual fact that he is thinking of suing, or that the acl was caused by the first injury. Just a massive beat up delivered by a nobody.

As for Leon, sounds like whether Mick was around or not he was only going to stay for money. Probably best he didn't play on seeing as though money was his motivation. I love Leon and backed him when everyone dumped on him when he was dropped after 2010 but it's probably best he left.

Not sure if it has been covered but on the hot breakfast Eddie said that Damien & Mick are very close and have been for years. So we have our source for last years leaks that Mick wasn't going to stay on.

On Leon, the offer from what I understand was fair, more than fair.
Here's why.
He had history of not performing when it counted, he played in 4 grand finals for a total of 36 touches. He got 22 in his last.

You have to be judged on what you do over a number of years, not just the last.

Spot on! Leon is a money grub, i bet they even paid him a couple gran to say he would have stayed on under Mick. Sorry leon the money wasnt good enough hope your havin fun in the wafl...

Leon chose to leave Collingwood.
Firstly it was the 'insult' salary offer for 2012, then it was the wish to return home, now it has something to do with the coaching changes???
All seems a bit fickle to me.
I am (was) a great supporter of Leon.
A little disappointed how his career ended & the nature of his departure.
I do miss his pin point 50m passing.

This is the new age media. Utter garbage.

Pretty much sums it. Reporting on hypotheticals instead of facts. "I might've stayed...", gimme a break!

What this story showed is that although Leon, as far as I'm concerned did the wrong thing by leaving at the end of 2011, he actually has too much class to speak ill of the club that looked after him. :thumbsu:

By wrong thing I mean leaving the club when faced with a big pay cut after getting big bucks to play like crap for 2 years, before having a stellar 2011.

I personally think he owed the club another stellar year at less $$$ to even the ledger out.

talking about this today, the point was made that in 11 years at the club, he should have been traded or delisted at least 6 times. Just shows you that Mick loved him.

Did anyone else hear on the radio that Geoff Walsh said it came down to money? Halfway through 2010 he said that he would retire at the end of the season. Then he said that 2011 was going to be his last year. It just so happened that he had a terrific year and then wanted to stay on for another one. The problem was that all the money under the cap had already been allocated. 200k and a chance to earn a premiership medal around your neck would have been enough motivation if his heart was really in it. Mick or no Mick. He owed Collingwood one more year after he was overpaid for two.

^ That seems pretty accurate to me. There seemed no doubt at all right up to past the mid point of the season that he would be retiring and heading home at the end of the season.

It was only his great form and AA selection that seemed to cloud this a bit. I think in the end he probably strongly considered playing again but just wasn't prepared to do it for less money than before. The problem was that he wasn't budgeted for so he was only offered what we could pay under the cap.
