Lewis Johnston - signs another one year contract

Vader never said he was gone gone gone.

he always said that without game time he was likely to go, and then once game time was forthcoming, changed that stance to likely retain (but is lucky and not really show a whole heap)

I can't really see where Vader has erred in his position on LJ.
Shhhh don't spill the illusion.

That very astute.

If you declare one one occasion that a player must/will be delisted and you declare on another occasion that the player "may" survive then you will never be wrong

to be fair, Johnston didn't play until the end of the season and had shown nothing at AFL to date.

not a hard assumption to make that he would be at the top of the delist pile.

1 year contract doesn't really give you confidence that the AFC's opinion varies much from Vaders.

I think that Sando/the AFC were a bit confused regarding Lewis.

He has done as much as we could have expected since returning to SA (he was a dominant forward for the Roosters in 2012, played a great finals series and followed it up again this year in the red and white) but we were reluctant to give him a run of games despite injuries to forwards in 2012 and 2013. He just didn't fit with the way we wanted to play in the F50 (which makes you wonder why we traded for him).

It has been a similar story with Lynchy last year and Kerridge and Griggs this year.

I am personally doubtful that Lewis will be a first choice in our 22 once JJ and Tex are back but I still reserve the right to annoy Vader. :)

1 year was spot on.
Didnt do enough to earn a 2 year contract, but did enough to warrant a contract.
Yep, did enough to not be delisted is another way to put it.

I do believe in LJ though. Always thought as a junior he had oodles of talent and rated him very highly. I hope he can keep the momentum into 2014 and become the gun he should have.

Well, there are one of two possible scenarios. All that was offered was a one year contract, or, a one year contract is all that Johnston was prepared to sign. We just don't know which one took place. I'd probably go with the one year contract was all that was offered, to keep Johnston on his toes, but it's entirely possible that Johnston now believes that he belongs at AFL level, and would like to try and increase his worth before he signs a multi-year deal.

Interesting that he only got the one year - could it be that his manager wanted him to cement his spot next year to get a better long-term deal thereafter?

I think its a combination of that and the crows not wanting to put him on a long term contract based on the unpredictability of our forward setup next season once tex comes back. If tex takes LJs spot and LJ cant make it back into the side and cant be seen to be able to work with tex I would suggest his career is over. That isn't my view point as I think they can play well in the same forward line together.

The AFC were not allowed to offer him more than a one year contract after the almighty Vader pronounced that he was GONE, Gone, Gone....

That's one Vader (and counting)
At the time I said it, he was "gone, gone, gone". He said as much himself in the interview he gave subsequently. Everything I said about him was proven correct in that interview.

Are you still absolutely certain that Tambling, Jaensch, Martin etc, etc, etc are Gone, Gone, Gone....

Still expecting those 3 to be in the departure lounge, yes.. depending on how many players we can land during trade week (and free agency). We'd have to pay out the 2014 contracts for Martin & Jaensch, but if we can afford to do it any year then 2013 is the year to do it.

Right now the only certain departure is the retirement of Johncock. Riley & Joyce are as good as gone. Callinan probably won't get a new contract either - though he's far more deserving than many on our list.

That's enough to cover the arrival of Betts, the upgrading of Laird & Hartigan and 1x ND selection. Any further arrivals (or draft selections) have to be matched by a departure, particularly if they don't involve a player being traded out.

Tambling, Martin & Jaensch would have to be the next 3 players in the gun.

For me, this would be by far the least likely scenario. A guy that has spent all of his time in the SANFL and couldn't break in to the team, at last gets an opportunity through injuries and then struggles to make an impact. He would have to be a supreme optimist to not grasp whatever the club was offering him. Imagine LJ saying "3 year contract? Nah I'll take my chances and punt on a one year deal". Can't see it. Besides, I believe that if things change contracts are often re-negotiated. No club wants one of their players feeling as though they have been screwed. They would want all players getting what they are worth.

Seriously? You picked those three. I mean at least try to prove Vader wrong. I'd be amazed if Jaensch and Martin wasn't delisted and probably blaming the AFC administration for incompetence.

Tambling is saved by dumb luck.

1 year sounds about right to me. Has the potential to be a very good forward. Still not completely convinced he's a well rounded enough player to make in the AFL. Usually players with one one defining attribute don't last long. Johnston is a beautiful set shot kick, aside from that, the other areas of his game seem to be lacking. Some question marks surround his contested ability (contested marking, tackling etc).

I agree with this.

Sanderson has given off a vibe about LJ, which to me, just smells ever so slightly. I hope I'm wrong.

LJ has been compared in these parts to our version of Jack Gunston. Would we only be signing Gunston up for one year? I doubt it.

LJ is 22 years old. A one year contract? What gives, Sando?

Something's up here.

Hasn't done enough to warrant more than 1 year IMO. He may in time, but he certainly hasn't convinced me yet that he's a hungry desperate AFL footballer.

It's catch 22 though, if he does come on and has a good year then we risk losing him. Look at Jesse White, last year he had leprosy, this year he is the new black.

I get the feeling he's just one of those guys you only get best out of by keeping him on the edge. That's not to say that if he has a good year he should continue on 1 years deals forever - but for now it may just work for him to have another "awakening " as he did a few weeks ago ( which saved his hide)

Sooooo, after nominating 14 must go players over the first 15 games this season we are down to a player that has already retired, the club mascot and the guy with the broken leg.

I will really enjoy watching Aidan's development next year

So rather than bagging me, for the sake of baiting me for a laugh, how about you come up with the list of players who you think will be given the old heave ho? Stop taking pot shots from the cheap seats and post something useful for a change? Or maybe you're just afraid that you'll get it wrong again, and have to go on holiday to Vanuatu again to escape the shame. It would be a pity if you had to come up with a 3rd alias in as many years.

Sando should make him move in with Tex over the summer to broken hill before pre season and then into Tex's adelaide place during pre-season so he can learn what it takes to develop ticker and defensive pressure
