Coach Lions - Has the Fagan era already peaked?

Kiddy with another pre-season will go past Rich if he hasn’t already, Robbo out I think will be a positive replace with Ashcroft. Zorko still think has bit left in the tank if his body can hold together.

Just need that breakthrough MCG win and a big finals win wouldn’t hurt. Both at the same time even better for them.
I 100% believe that Kiddy has gone past Rich. Last year seems to have been Dan's swan song unfortunately but his lack of speed which is even worse this year along with Kiddy's kicking ability means that he is a liability in defence now sometimes. If we played Zorko in Rich's current role with him and Kiddy splitting kicking duties I think we hold together better defensively without losing the attacking side of Rich's kicking. It doesn't look like Richy will get to be apart of a premiership team IMO. Zorko obviously also on the out but I agree he still has enough left to not replace him with a younger player yet if we put him in the back pocket IMO.

Personnel wise they ain't that good. Neale and McCluggage are A graders. Bailey, Coleman and Rayner are good up and coming players. Cameron is a brilliant small forward, Starcevich one of the best mid-sized backmen, Adams is solid and Oscar Mac is good ruckman. I'm not sure I rate the rest of their list. And before you say what about Hipwood and Andrews? They are decent but don't do enough.
Given the above, I think Fagan has done very well considering. They need a huge injection of talent.

Kind of agree there.

At the same time he's gone with the same side for about 5 years.

Besides Kiddy Coleman be hasn't changed a thing.

The Lions tall forwards are flakey as hell. All three, McStay, Hipwood and Daniher go missing for entire games with maybe just a couple of junk time goals to pad the stats. They need to let McStay go and look around for a good medium size forward like a Heeney or Gunston (or similar) who is mobile, good overhead, consistent and a good shot at goal. I’d also look to see how Hipwood goes in defence.

A peaking Coleman would have made a big difference late last year, instead his development was slowed (5 games in first season) by playing a Hawthorn has been. Fagan is a good coach but he favours the tried and true too much and is risk averse, and it may have cost them their chance.

Apologies if already raised in this thread, but I was surprised to see their age profile over recent weeks:

Round 19 - 26.70 (2nd oldest, behind cats)
Round 20 - 26.48 (3rd oldest, behind cats, tigers)
Round 21 - 26.50 (3rd oldest, behind cats, eagles)
Round 22 - 25.76 (5th oldest, behind cats, tigers, eagles and pies)
Round 23 - 26.07 (need to wait and see where they rank at end of the round)

They're not a team I think of as 'old', but there you go.

Skillful side, but softer than Jaidyn Stephenson.

Well cats have more finals experience than Brisbane overall.

Helps that your team makes finals almost every year from 2009-2022.
Brisbane made finals in 2009, went through a 10 year period of no finals then made finals from 2009-22.

Tom Hawkins played his 31st final tonight and will play his 32nd final in a grand final.

They will get the #1 draft pick for their midfield so you would expect their midfield would be better next year, however their KPF's are crap so unless they can trade in a KPF I don't think they make a grand final with this squad of players

Insane to let a 64 year old coach an AFL club.

Should be spending his twilight years playing golf or having a few light beers down the country club.
Still got three more years before he can do all that :p

I'm not sure. They've had four fantastic years, including three top 4 finishes, two prelims, and two straight-set semi-final losses. On the whole, they've slightly underachieved. I think this season made up for things somewhat. Making it to a prelim from outside the top 4 is commendable. Knocking out the reigning premiers in Melbourne is commendable. If they had won the semi final last season, they'd have been solid.

All I can say is that it has been great for the competition to see Brisbane at the top of the ladder the last 4 years. They were down and out for some time. I hope they can hang around the top 4 for another 2-3 seasons.
