Lions Reserves 2013

Play 'em again in 11 days. Could be a tasty affair.

Irel, Close was forward early and back late. A few touches (the footy didn't spend much time down his end after the break). Just seemed to be feeling his way.

Close also seemed to be rested on the bench reasonably regularly compared to others. But that might be just because I was paying more attention to it for him than others.

The suns had access to far more talent than we ever have and they've now had 3 years development so I wouldnt expect we'd see results like that.

For those that watch regularly over the years, obviously it would be a combination of both but is it more the coaching or the players we're drafting?

Was amazed to see doc playing through the centre and extracting ball after ball .. thought he was a backman

I think we spent a good part of last year getting him use to playing onball to.

And by all reports, I have no problem with him playing that role.

I personally think he's been going ok. Seems to be mainly playing as a floating tall in and around our back line. Gets loose on the wing occasionally for a few touches.

Not knocking down the door for selection but think he's quite a handy player for us (in the 2s at least).

Lions ReservesThere were some big stats-winners in the Reserves’ 105-point rout of Gold Coast on Sunday afternoon.

Sam Docherty (35 disposals), Patrick Karnezis (32) and Callum Bartlett (30) had plenty of possessions, while Aaron Cornelius and Jordan Lisle led the way up forward with four goals apiece.

Draftee Marco Paparone also had a big afternoon, running the Suns ragged with 28 touches and 15 marks.

I just tweeted Voss saying that I'd mow his lawn if he elevates Cal.

Everyone else should make a similar offer. Any plasterers here? How about carpenters? Vossy could use a new deck.

The dim impression I'm getting from the reserves is that we're running other teams off the park. For example, Paparone taking 15 marks suggests someone for the Suns was struggling to go with him.

We've really focussed on endurance the last couple of years, and it's good to see that being reflected at least in the reserves' performances.

Endurance will be a big factor this weekend against the Roos, as will our ability to rebound from the backline. A bit of extra pace from any of Docherty, Karnezis or Bartlett would be helpful.

I'll clean his pool. Can't tweet it but happy for you to let him know.

Neafl review

Sam Docherty continued his strong start to the year with a game-high 35 touches from half-back, Callum Bartlett bullocked his way to 30 disposals, and coach Leigh Harding branded Marco Paparone’s game “absolutely exceptional” after the no.23 draft pick returned 28 touches, 15 mark and three goals. In attack, Jordan Lisle and Aaron Cornelius marked strongly all day and kicked four goals apiece, while Billy Longer controlled the ruck, feeding prolific ball-gatherers Jack Crisp and Patrick Karnezis, who racked up 24 and 32 disposals respectively.

Having Docherty, Bartlett, and Paparone dominating in the reserves has me very excited! Makes it hard for me to keep the lid on my hope for them to come into the senior side for a debut. Karnezis and Harwood in for Polec and Yeo this week. Maybe blood some vs the Demons in Round 5.

Would just be part of Doc's development. I would doubt he would go near the middle in the seniors, his way into the team will be via HB. But he is a player that will be able to eventually work his way from HB into the middle, and that starts by giving him some time there in the 2nds. It's good to see our midfield for the reserves playing well after losing all the mature big names last year.

Played mostly up back as an 18 year old. Always had potential to step in the midfield and it seems that's the clubs eventual plan on where he will end up.

I remember an interview where he said that in U18s he played as a defender, but that was literally his first year of it. Before then he'd always been a midfielder.
