Lions Reserves 2013

I think the NEAFL would be remiss if it does not investigate this game further. Surely two players winding up with broken jaws or cheekbones warrants some form of investigation or account being provided from the Suns.

Only one player receiving a four match ban (reduced from 8) arising from these incidents is unacceptable IMO

Lions highlights at about 4:32:

Fair goal from Sam Docherty. Edit: Scrap that, it was Ace.

Was that Paparone who took the screamer in the goalsquare?

Edit - As soon as I re-watched and enlarged the video, noticed it was Michael right away...cheers Haso.:thumbsu:

guess all three emergencies will come in given all but two of our extended bench have been named in that side. At least 3 will come out for the seniors, two to play and a travelling emergency.

Not that that side could run on anyway, 15 listed players on the field there. its still a 14 limit isnt it?

Jordy Lisle captain. Never struck me as much of a leader.
They generally throw the captaincy around a bit.

Wouldn't read much into it.

Not really. Last year Retzy was the captain until he went down, and I'm pretty sure Lisle has been captain in all the proper reserves games this year.

Good chance to develop some leadership skills :)

That's what the ressies are for!

Reckon it's good for Jordy. He coasts a bit and it would be good to spark him up by giving him some ownership.

Yeah, was listed as captain last week as I recall.

I find it a little over the top when non-AFL-affliliated teams in the NEAFL whinge about the dominance of the AFL reserves sides, but man, gotta feel sorry for Broadbeach's midfield coach this week trying to work out a plan to counter a midfield rotation of:

Black
Karnezis
Crisp
Polkinghorne
Harwood
Longer
Banfield
Yeo
Paparone
Conway

And if Bartlett and Polec weren't injured, they'd be in the mix too.

No disrespect to Broadbeach but they're going to get absolutely killed.

Yea but take Black out of there and basically it's just a bunch of 18-20 year old kids in a full time environment. Talented kids, but still pretty young players.

As I understand it, the issue is that the listed players are quicker, more skilful and often with better endurance. They are better drilled in terms of structures. The non-AFL clubs can really only offer bulk and maybe experience to combat that. I'm not saying that they should change the current rules - this system of limiting the number of listed players is better than the Lions/Suns playing one or two short, for example. But I am a little concerned that we might be seeing the start of a big gap between the haves and the have nots. That won't be good for the comp, for Qld footy and, in turn, for the Lions.

Excellent point. What could counter this aside from the timely process of expanding the interest of the game to youth and the community as a whole in QLD to develop more talented and competitive players?

Perhaps offering Brisbane players as top up players to other teams?

One premiership in 10 years and suddenly the rest of the competition has no chance.

The NEAFL is improving all the time and if we get some injuries then suddenly we come back to the field. The academies are also going to be giving elite training programs to more and more kids who will find their way into other NEAFL teams thus improving them over time as well.
