The club’s handling of Hartigan is interesting. Doesn’t play for either Hawthorn or Box Hill. He has been our AFL runner some weeks recently. Assume agreement has already been made that he will retire with a year left on his contract.

Has he got a gig lined up as an assistant with us? Has been seen on the bench talking to the youngsters at Box Hill during the year.
That's what I think. I've got no inside knowledge, but he's played that on bench mentor role if he's not in the coaches box.

Would like to see Worps shed a few kilos in the offseason. Was much leaner, quicker and more agile in his B&F year. Tried to bulk him up too quickly and he has lost that turn of speed.
I rewatched the Gold Coast game in 2019 recently, amazing just the size difference between now and then. His contested work was good enough at what would be 10kg less.

What a difference we have been in the last 6 weeks.

We need to have a maximum of 1 plodder in the centre square rule now. Cannot have Tom, JOM and Worpel in there at the same time.

We finally add leg speed to the centre with Finn, Nash, Newk, Moore and Ward and we look a much more dangerous side.

Oliver is easily the best contested mid for mine. And he’s fairly lean.

I think he’s the player Worps should be modelling his game on. Similar strengths and weaknesses.

I think it’s become increasingly clear that its worps or Mitch in our best 22.

I don’t want to discredit what Tom has given us, and I think he is clearly the better player now, but for the long term think we need to turn him into a 20ish pick and move on.

I just hope we can do it without much angst or disruption to the group.

Incorrect for this year. Mitchell has played a very different role. Worpel has struggled this year for what is probably a number of reasons. For this year at least, that is not one of them.

Neale, Miller, Laird and Libba aren't very big either.

Would be around the 83-86kg mark. Worp's in the last couple of years looks like he's been playing in the low 90s.

All players have things worth persevering with, otherwise they'd not be drafted in the first place. The reality of it is that list changes need to be made.

On the second point, who's Jack?
List changes need to be made but you'd think that it would be.

Howe
Shiels
Hartigan
Phillips

Then you have
Saunders
Mitchell
Callow

And then potential trade/retirement from
Brockman (really hope not)
McEvoy
Mitchell
Wingard
O'meara
Worpel

Downie in the mix but barely seen him and did enough to get 2 AFL games in first season and injured all this year. In not for injuries he could have been having a year like Mcguiness is.

There's also the idea that we may trade one of the surplus half backs. Day, impy, bramble, cj, scrimshaw, Hardwick, Morris have all shown to be afl standard small defenders. That's 7 for probably 3 spots in the side. Would be a bold move but not impossible.

I don’t think we will be desperate off load one of JOM, Tom or Worpel simply because there’s too many of them. If a club comes with the right offer, each of them is tradeable.

The midfield will slowly improve in the next two years as our young players fill out and get confidence.

Adding an Amon, Hopper, Taranto type will simply fill an extra slot in the 8 midfield / forward spots. It’s not an immediate solution which will deliver us 4 more wins in 2023.

His draft year weight was 85.5kg.

His weight this season was 88kg (Hawthorn site).

Where is this extra 10kg theory coming from?

He's been listed at 88kg for a couple of years now and we are notoriously bad as a club for measurements. 10kg is a bit much but I wouldn't be surprised if he was around 92-93. He has looked considerably bigger.

At his (185cm) height some players can comfortably carry 90+ kgs.

Petracca for instance is about Worps height (maybe 1 or 2cm taller), plays at 97kg and covers the ground exceptionally well (mind you he is a freak in that regard)

Duke as well is not much taller than Worps and I will eat my hat if Jai isn'y playing at 90kg+ and like Petracca he just glides across the ground with great speed and evasiveness.

I guess it all comes down to the individual players physiology and build.

I must admit I did see Worps play a game this year and he looked so slow and lumbersome, no pep at all in his movements so possibly he could be a player that needs to play at his lower weight range to get the best out of himself.

This is his build from 2019 it might not be ten kg but it's more than 2-3 heavier.

Petracca is a freak of an athlete but like Dusty does not do much defensive running. He was dunking easily as a 6'1 17 year old.

Worpel does not have the firepower to be a 100% offensive midfielder and does not have the physiology to play at that 90+kg mark. I wouldn't be surprised if Newk is pushing above 90 but I wouldn't also be surprised if we trim him down in the future so he can run out games a little bit better. Has gassed out a few times (our last game included).

He was in the leadership group last year so it’s not that outlandish a statement.
It was a pretty widely held view after he won a B&F at age 20, was given the number 5 jumper and entered into the leadership group by 22. His regression has been a huge surprise. If we can get him back to his B&F level it's a massive boost to our midfield stocks moving forward. With 3 years of poor performance, that is now a large 'if' though. He is worth persevering with in my view though. We have been able to develop a number of guys who didn't look AFL standard into good players. Worpel can do it, it just needs to be recaptured. I'd rather keep him and move on older guys we know have passed their peak and won't improve from here.

Who has been mentoring Worpel in the middle? Don't say T.Mitchell & JO'M, cause that's hilarious.

Worpel has pretty much had to fly the flag on his own, until new mids arrived. He will flourish with Newcombe, Ward, Moore, + 2022 crop.

Worps looks way too top heavy now for mine. To carry the extra weight as a footballer you need more of it in your legs and core. Least it’s what I’ve observed. The stronger your legs are the more weight you can carry.

Petracca and Newk definetly fall into this category.

A couple of THICK boys those two 😂
