Petracca is a freak of an athlete but like Dusty does not do much defensive running. He was dunking easily as a 6'1 17 year old.

Worpel does not have the firepower to be a 100% offensive midfielder and does not have the physiology to play at that 90+kg mark. I wouldn't be surprised if Newk is pushing above 90 but I wouldn't also be surprised if we trim him down in the future so he can run out games a little bit better. Has gassed out a few times (our last game included).
Petracca is never going to be an endurance athlete, especially not as his weight. What makes him such a freak is he can run as fast and jump as high as everyone else despite having 10+ kg on them.

Even then he’s had to get relatively lean in the upper body and get fit to make it.

Petracca and Newk definetly fall into this category.

A couple of THICK boys those two 😂
Jai reminds me of a guy from high school that was just built thick (in an athletic way) and had a surprising amount of speed and endurance.

I fondly remember a day in year 10 at our athletics carnival day where a couple other guys who actually did sprinting as their sport outside of school (competed at state comps) were pretty cocky ahead of the 100m sprint. Wearing all their pro running gear with sprinting shoes, etc. Boasting about how much they were going to win by. Then the guy who reminds me of Jai came strolling down with a pie and a Big M. One of the teachers asked if he wanted to race and after a little encouragement he scoffed the pie and sculled the rest of the Big M. Seconds later he's lining up to race and not long later he's won it easily. Best part? He was barefoot!

Some people are just built differently. Freak athletes.

I feel like the last 2 or so months has really shifted the perspective of our list and its draft needs. At that time, we had Lewis stamp himself as the dominant No 1 key forward. Kozi had come into the side and kicked 11 goals in 4 games to really kick on from the solid base he built last year. Jeka was kicking bags in the VFL and Callow could hardly get a look in (but was still marking strongly) amongst all the key forwards.

In the middle, Jai was shining but other than him, we didn't have much evidence of young midfield talent that had shown all that much at AFL level.

The needs really seemed to be mids, mids and mids as well as a key back - with small/mid defenders and key forwards a fully stocked area.

Since then, Jeka has moved to key back and looked very good. We've brought in Blanck who has also looked at home. Ward has returned and put in a really good month. Moore has moved into the middle and done the same. Maginness has done some fantastic jobs as a tagger (whilst Nash keeps getting better). Meanwhile, Kozi has fallen right away, Callow has looked solid at VFL without being remarkable (and Lewis continues to miss games).

We suddenly have the beginnings of a decent young midfield in Newcombe, Ward and Moore (with Maginness, Nash and Worpel able support personnel (I'm expecting Worpel to come back)), now seem to be stocked for key defenders (Jeka, Blanck, DGB with Sic still having plenty of time) but now having a potential key forward hole.

We obviously still need to draft midfielders (and have plenty of spots on the field where we need to add young talent) but it's interesting how quickly the outlook can change.

Obviously Sicily and Newcombe have been excellent and are the ones rated as elite by our and opposition coaches this year. Moore very good but probably Gunston/Lewis next in line given each have missed plenty of games. They'd be top 50 if they had not and that would reflect clubs being interested in Guston as a free agent. His best footy is still very good (and we need to re-sign him).

The low votes for the likes of Mitchell and O'Meara who have played nearly all games says a lot also. I don't think clubs will be climbing over themselves to trade for them, just as they didn't last year.

They’ve both played peripheral roles.

It’s by design that they’re not our best players each week.

What's even more interesting is those that haven't received a vote ?

Feels like I am reading this on a 60 year old's text messages.

Also there is no way known Worpel would be first picked and Morrison would be fighting it out on the bench. If Worpel was fit right now he wouldn't be picked over anyone presently in our squad based on his form this year.

In the case of Tom, definitely because he's been intentionally moved, in the case of Jaeger I think it's because he doesn't play selfish football. He's doing a lot of our heavy lifting defensively, and from a centre clearance, contested possession and ground ball point of view. He's also playing a better attacking game than ever on a per-possession basis. It allows other players to have the starring performances.

Very much this - the games I have attended this year the amount of heavy lifting for no glory that Jaeger has been doing is huge. I wouldn't be shocked if he polled ahead of Mitchell in the PCM because he is unselfishly doing what the team requires of him.

The competition's coaches - including our own - don't seem to agree based on the votes

Josh Gibson didn't feature prominently in the AFLCA votes in 2013 and 2015 either - didn't stop him winning the PCM.

A player who is best on ground once over the course of the year would get more AFLCA votes than a player who was 6th best on ground in every match.

Not true. Over 40 in 2013 and over 30 in 2015. He got a lot of finals votes in PCM too if I recall
