I know I have said it before but I would love to see this team take on the NSW/ACT team as on paper it would be a great match.
As a theoretical opponent, this could be a NSW/ACT team they could play:

FB: M Kennedy (GWS) - Rowe (Car) - Coughlan (StK)
HB: McVeigh (Syd) - Hartley (Ess) - Suckling (WB)
MF: Heeney (Syd) - Whiley (Car) - Steele (GWS)
HF: Townsend (Ric) - Walker (Ade) - Davis (GC)
FF: Bruce (StK) - Hawkins (Gee) - Breust (Haw)
OB: Witts (Col) - Bird (Ess) - Vandenberg (Mel)
IC: Cunningham (Syd) - B Jack (Syd) - Mills (Syd) - K Jack (Syd)

I think NSW would win due to having Walker, Hawkins and Bruce inside 50.
QLD
FB: Dempsey (Ess) - Thompson (GC) - Merrett (BL)
HB: Gilbert (StK) - Andrews (BL) - Spurr (Fre)
C: Oxley (Col) - D.Beams (BL) - Harbrow (GC)
HF: Zorko (BL) - Dixon (PA) - C.Beams (BL)
FF: N.Riewoldt (StK) - K.Tippett (Syd) - Ch.Cameron (Ade)
FOL: Smith (Gee) - Bell (BL) - Armitage (StK)
IC: Hickey (StK) - Weller (Fre) - J.Wagner (Mel) - Whitecross (Haw)

NSW
FB: M Kennedy (GWS) - Rowe (Car) - Coughlan (StK)
HB: McVeigh (Syd) - Hartley (Ess) - Suckling (WB)
C: Heeney (Syd) - Whiley (Car) - I.Smith (Haw)
HF: Townsend (Ric) - Walker (Ade) - Davis (GC)
FF: Bruce (StK) - Hawkins (Gee) - Breust (Haw)
FOL: Witts (Col) - Bird (Ess) - Vandenberg (Mel)
IC: Cunningham (Syd) - Steele (GWS) - Mills (Syd) - K Jack (Syd)

So who takes this one? My opinion:

Both forward lines are pretty strong. Walker-Hawkins-Bruce vs Tippett-Dixon-Riewoldt. Zorko and Breust probably cancel each other out in terms of small forwards and Davis-Townsend vs Cameron-C.Beams are probably around even as well. I think Queensland's midfield is slightly better with the likes of D.Beams, Bell, Armitage and Harbrow likely beating Henney, Whiley, Bird and Vandenberg. Heeney is a freak but I don't think he has the support to beat that Queensland midfield. I think Smith/Hickey has Witts/Cunningham covered in the ruck as well. Neither back line is particularly impressive but I think Queensland's tall backs are better than NSW's. McVeigh as a small/medium defender probably gives NSW the tick in terms of the small defenders but it all depends on how the two teams match up position wise. NSW's bench looks stronger than QLD's so that may even up the battle in the midfield.

Harris Andrews/Rory Thompson will find it hard to compete with the brute strength Taylor Walker/Tom Hawkins possesses. Daniel Merrett is an option in that sense but he's no longer at the level he used to be when he was an elite key defender. Queensland would have a tough time containing the NSW key forwards but I feel it would be a similar situation up the other end when looking at the QLD forwards. I highly doubt Hartley, Rowe and Coughlan could contain Dixon, Tippett and Riewoldt. The Queensland forwards would probably have a field day. I think it would come down to the midfield and who could get it to their forward line the most.

I've already said I think Queensland's ruckmen would win that battle so NSW would need to make up for that by winning the contested ball. Heeney is the one that could make that happen because I feel Mills is still slightly too young to shine at the AFL level and Keiren Jack isn't elite when it comes to that. Both Armitage and D.Beams are more prolific in the contested ball situations so I'm going to say Queensland's midfield wins and, therefore, Queensland wins this battle.

Phil Davis would also be with NSW/ACT so that adds to the NSW/ACT teams strength in defence.

Either way though that is a really good analysis.

Davis moved to Adelaide at the age of 14. He would be considered South Australian under the old S.O.O rules.

I was under the impression under the old rules he would be considered to be from ACT? I think it is where he first plays Aussie Rules.
I believe the rule was you play for wherever you resided the most between the ages of 12-18.

Could definitely make a good State of Origin team out of that list. A little short on classy midfielders but has everything else covered.

not many A grade to elite players there- Dayne Beams, Nick Riewoldt, Dayne Zorko are the only 3 IMO. although a few of the younger ones have the potential to grow into that category eg. Aliir Aliir, Rory Thompson, Eric Hipwood, Harris Andrews and Charlie Cameron. a lot of spuds there though.

Yeah it seems that Queensland AF has increased in depth but not at the pointy end compared with a decade or so ago.

Still, to have 49 listed players is fantastic. Surely that is the highest ever?

Aspley - 10 players - the East Freo of Qld footy, surprised it is not Southport ?
Southport have fallen off since the introduction of the NEAFL. I believe their under 19s/reserves team was removed and that has played a big factor in it.

What would the SoO side look like?
Hard to say because a few players that would have made the team retired last year and we are yet to see the quality of the draftees like #10 pick Jack Bowes. Here's a bit of an idea of their current spine:

Key defenders: Aliir Aliir (22), Rory Thompson (25), Harris Andrews (20)
Key forwards: Nick Riewoldt (34), Kurt Tippett (29), Charlie Dixon (26)
Inside mids: Dayne Beams (26), Dayne Zorko (27), David Armitage (28)
Ruckmen: Tom Hickey (25), Zac Smith (26), Archie Smith (21)

Obviously let down a bit in the midfield but if kids like Jack Bowes become as good as people are predicting then that won't be a problem for much longer.
Did they play at different junior clubs?
Both played junior football for Mudgeeraba but needed to switch clubs as they got older to compete in the higher leagues. Dayne was recruited by powerhouse Southport and got drafted by Collingwood after snubbing the Suns. They were both very good cricketers and I believe Claye basically gave away footy away to pursue cricket. Then he saw Dayne got drafted and decided to follow his lead by joining Labrador. 12 months later Claye was drafted by Brisbane.

Wow! Three PBC boys at the Suns! Always been a relatively strong club down in the south of the Gold Coast, great to see some getting into the AFL at long last.
PBC has become a bit of a farm for the Suns in recent years and it doesn't look like stopping anytime soon with guys like Crossley, Dawson and Foster coming through this year. Although, Crossley plays for Labrador at the QAFL level even though he attends PBC High like the rest of them. The combination of the club competing in the QAFL and a sports excellence program at the high school has really set PBC in an upward trajectory when it comes to Aussie rules. The head coach of the QAFL seniors is also the high school coach so that's obviously an advantage. PBC and Helensvale are the only schools on the GC to offer Aussie rules sports excellence programs and Helensvale aren't linked with a local club so it isn't surprising to see PBC succeeding. Don't be surprised to see a large amount of PBC kids on the Suns' list in the next five years.

Gold Coast academy coach Andrew Raines played his junior football at PBC so perhaps a bit of favourable treatment is playing out...

Does Lachie Weller consider himself a Queenslander or a Tasmanian? He didn't qualify for the Gold Coast Academy because he wasn't there long enough.
Lachie moved to the Gold Coast when he was 14 and would be considered a Queenslander under the old SoO rules.

Young fellow I know says he's doing Sports excellence AFL at southport high this year, so hopefully that's correct.
I'd love to know what happened to the primary school Aussie rules comp that my son played in a few years ago. It was brilliantly run by afl Gold Coast and just seemed to disappear without explanation.

Serious question - could a midfield of Dayne Beams, Dayne Zorko, Charlie Cameron; a forward line of Nick Riewoldt, Charlie Dixon, Eric Hipwood; and a back line of Aliir Aliir, Rory Thompson and Harris Andrews trouble the big three states in a hypothetical State of Origin game? If the ruck division comes into play, QLD have their choice of Kurt Tippett, Tom Hickey, Zac Smith and Braydon Preuss. If speed is a question mark then it's important to remember both Charlie Cameron and Jarrod Harbrow are lightning quick and and evasive.

So, how does the hypothetical 2017 QLD state team go against the big three?

Might be able to beat SA I think. Queensland are a little short of quality midfielders.
