Hard to disagree there. You would almost have to think about putting Tippa or Raz in there after the year they've had but I'm not sure who you kick out. Goddard maybe.. His kicking which used to be his weapon hasn't been that great over the last 2 years.

I did think about it, and I would rather have Tippa in the side than Goddard.

Dylan Shiel
Stephen Coniglio
Brett Deledio
Heath Shaw
Callan Ward
Toby Greene
Jeremy Cameron
Tom Scully

Nick Haynes, Josh Kelly, Shane Mumford, Zac Williams and Phil Davis all unlucky to miss out.

The fact we have players like Grigg, Caddy and Miles making our top 8 whilst players like Rory Lobb and Steve Johnson can't make an HM for GWS is quite concerning.

1. Alex Rance
2. Dustin Martin
3. Jack Riewoldt
4. Trent Cotchin
5. Dion Prestia
6. Josh Caddy
7. Shane Edwards
8. Dylan Grimes

Stiff to miss out: Grigg, B Ellis, Houli, Miles

Our top 6 is substantially better than the next tier of our team at this stage, but Edwards consistently produced A grade football prior to his 2016 season and I fully expect him to regain that elite form in 2017. Really need guys like Corey Ellis, Nick Vlastuin, Ben Lennon etc to step up.

1. Lynch
2. Ablett
3. May
4. Martin
5. Swallow
6. Wright
7. Hanley
8. Miller

Kolodjashnij & Hall probably stiff.

Worrying thing is Dixon, Bennell, O'meara and Prestia all probably make that top 8

Thats a bad list, the recruiting team has alot to answer for.

They've already answered for it ... with their jobs.

To be fair though, there's at least 5 ex-Carlton players who've appeared on other club's lists, so maybe those responsible for list management have as much to answer for as the recruiting team. Either way, they've all paid for it with their jobs. A whole new team in now, hopefully start moving in the right direction.

Thats true those guys are long gone. Your team is making the right moves at the moment with quality picks and with the GWS players which will be handy long term depth at the very least.

Still think the Judd trade (in hindsight) was a real quick fix and messed with your list. Whilst at the time you would take that deal in a heartbeat it seems like your list could have been built a bit better and contesting now by keeping Kennedy and that pick 3, also trying to keep Jacobs and potentially miss out on kruezer (got cotchin instead).

Can't agree with this. Judd was simply immense for Carlton. The best recruiting move the club has made in the last 20 years. Where the club stuffed up was in not backing up this masterstroke with other solid drafting, recruiting and list management. Getting a guy like Brock McLean, or overlooking Daniel Talia in favour of Kane Lucas when we were crying out of KPP's. This is indicative of where the club erred. Wayne Hughes held on to his job for way too long and pissed away a lot of opportunities. No point pretending he would have done any better a job had Judd not been there. We'd be pretty much where we are now, but without our current leaders ever having had an example of true professionalism and without supporters at least having had a taste of finals.

Mitch Robinson would be the last one out of that group that I'd highlight. He has been outstanding for us. Sometimes the foot soldiers who play really good, non-flashy footy do not get the recognition they deserve e.g. Liam Picken who is a gun.
Pickens skill and disposal is no were near as bad as Mitch's

Without a doubt you had a to go for Judd and he pretty much put you in finals for a few years, you cant not push to get a player of his calibre if he wants to come to your club. Just thinking that by recruiting him your list became better earlier than it should have but it wasn't deep enough to be a top 4 team.

Just one of those hindsight things, but if you didnt get him you end up with Kennedy, push hard to keep jacobs and go for cotchin instead of kreuzer and also have the pick 3. Just seems like a more rounded list, position and age demographic wise, that would have taken more time to be competitive / in a finals window but still going today. Essentially build the list around murphy and gibbs are for there prime years.

Port has recruited bad also, specifically in the 09/10 period when we wasted 3 first rounders on Butcher, Andrew moore and Ben Jacobs with the later looking half decent now. Looking at our lists needs we are lacking another good inside mid and also a forward which is what we went for in those drafts. Looking back now the they picked for positions which would have complemented our list but unfortunately they ddnt turn out.

I don't really get some of your points. Carlton pushed as hard as they could to hang on to Jacobs. Fact is, he threatened to walk to the PSD to get back home. Judd being on Carlton's list had absolutely nothing to do with it. Same with Kreuzer, who was the guy Carlton were drafting irrespective. Again, Judd had nothing to do with that. The inside story at the time was that Hughes would've taken Cale Morton with pick 3, so nothing lost there. JK would have been good to have, but we had Fev during our shittest years and were still shit, so I'm not sure he was going to make the difference you suggest. And yes, we may have got more top picks if we'd been shitter longer, but Hughes stuffed up a lot of picks, so all that guaranteed is that we'd be shitter longer.

Nah, the reason the list wasn't deep enough was because of poor drafting and recruiting decisions. If we'd nailed all the other decisions like we nailed the Judd one, we'd have been much better off.

Fair enough, don't know the full story about Jacobs, and Morton wouldn't have worked.

But still agree that you had to take Judd at the time, one of the best players of that era.

Spot on.

The going backwards period at draft table

11 of 2009 traded away to Melbourne for Brock McLean

12 Kane Lucas Carlton East Fremantle 2009

18 Matthew Watson Carlton Calder U18 2010

22 Josh Bootsma Carlton South Fremantle 2011

11 Troy Menzel Carlton Central District 2012

The giving playing resources away that helped get us into finals under Ratten and let go in Malthouse period for next to nothing.

Gave away Eddie Betts but took on Dale Thomas at same time.
Gave away Ratten's solild backman of 2011 finals in Laidler to premiership contender Sydney
Gave away Mitch Robinson to Brisbane.
Gave away Jeff Garlett for peanuts to Melbourne
Malthouse convinced our best key forward Waite to walk to North for nothing.
Malthouse helped turned around our potential match winner in Yarran into a shell of himself and lost soul.

The peak of Carlton in this 2009 to 2013 period was 2011 in finals , narrowly losing to Eagles in second week with none of Gibbs, Kruezer or Waite playing. A bit more decent help from umpires that night in last quarter and better decisions made at draft between 2009 and 2012 and kept same coach and who knows what levels the club could have got to in 2013 and 14 with Judd still there and no Malthouse coach. Sliding doors moment.

The dumb decisions were made at draft table, giving away players that helped get us into finals and then Swann and Kernahan and board replacing Ratten after horror injury run of season 2012 with Malthouse.

To simplify it down to never should have got Judd is really superficial outsider comment.
Judd deal was a fair and reasonable trade at time for both clubs.
Would have been nice to keep young Kennedy but something good had to be given up to get something that good at the time.
